Well Steve, it is neither Tom/TJ nor oTJ playing. But I will certainly accept your compliments on behalf of the team, and pass them along. 4LaneStudios belongs to the other member of the Lightfoot Tribute Team, Lynn! I am a lover of lyrics, and I've been following your game for some time now and just couldn't resist the temptation when I realized that I actually might have a correct answer.

Now for a second attempt: Q269 -- the "dots" would indicate that it is in a position other than the start of a line, and the capital on "Intended" would make it a proper name.

4LaneStudios nails 2 more down ! All in a days work for them as a fortuitous by-product in their GL vistory work. !

Kudos to 4=Lane for immediately picking up the 'dot rules' and 'caps rules' - no doubt aided to a certain extent by not seeing all the permutations of rules that evolved before the current state !

And Linda surmised my error ( now 5th +/- in 275 clues!!) in keying in 'Rocky Mountain' -singular- for the song I did intend - Albertal Bound. I should have keyed in plural on 'Mountains' - intuitively Linda caught the error, and moreover still got the Q right ! All hail Linda All Hail Linda !

Hey jj and Char !, we missed you (and others at the moment I can't remember the names of) both in the last ten, and thus far in this ten, hope all is well for the both of you. Char I know from reading a sampling of your posts in activity-oriented things you are just plain busy ! Likely the same for jj - you're both real anchors in the game, appreciated, as are all of you.

I hope the game is in fact a relaxing, recreational thing for all of you, I know all too well the stressors and troubles of day-to-day life; as do all of you. I wish for you that the game can play a small part in your means of putting problems out of mind , if possible, maybe for just a little while while you play, or you're thinking of one after you log off thats sticking in your head, 'cause you're just sure you know it; if only you could remember the song !

Even in those brief periods of thought, maybe those can keep the little pesky stress gremlins from taking over. You all are dignitaries, be it visiting, occassional, or semi-to-regular players. Hi Jenney, boy it's hard being a game host sometimes. And I don't get a Vanna either ! - To admire as a professional letter-turner - .

Well.... I'd decided this before I scanned RM's thoughtfully phrased submssion on the same clue. I wanted to make sure you bop the right person on the head - (me) lol - not Ron.... I never should have asterisked and notated that; it was inviting deflated pride, and no kupi-doll from the fair sad faces.... :confused:

All I meant to give leeway on was for any ambiguous submission that had a verse ending, per the dots indication of position, in either smiling, or smilin', as the intended song has a verse ending in, and interestingly on another verse line ending in smiling ! That's from Christian Island that has it both ways, in so far as Wayne Francis is correct; and I would be safe in saying he is a respected authority. Sorry Jenney, I know you interpreted my leeway as positional freedom as well. Perhaps I should have been more explicit. Hey, its just a game, huh ! Well played, but sorry.....

understanding is that Biscuit City is a euphemism used by the Hobos that road the rails; and dreamed of a paradise sort of town to rest easy in and never have to 'Light a shuck out of' - be it for a 'Watchman' ;) , or a local constable walkin his beat, or a paucity of possibles such as no grub,chaw,coffee, or 'baccy !

Q277 - Never Say Trust Me - is correctamundo #2 ! And I like that song a lot too; not that that makes any difference. You know who else does is jj - havn't seen hide nor hair of the man in what is now the third set of ten he's been absentia, no mail-in submission by proxy or nuthin... I hope he is up and kicking....he's been a game anchor since day 1 -as have about a total of 7 people that thinned down from oh...about 26 pages back, a LOT of people tried one or 30 and then must have said 'this makes my head hurt' lol... or 'this is boring'.... how could Lightfoot's lyrics be boring ?

Most of the regulars have said some version at some time in game play of this 'you know this game has me thinking about ( clue word ) while I'm drivin' to work ! - Or, it came to me while I was mowing the lawn ! lol... Hope you are enjoying this, and it enhances your appreciation of el Gordo's minstrelsy, as so many have really said - that it has caused them to really listen more carefully, to solve a clue, or pump for the next set (one said that lol) - but the common denominator is that they like the way it has changed some of the players way of listening that pleases them.

....LOL...... oh-boy! .... a chance for me to blabberty ! I was a second-string 3-street subdivision driveway basketball player.My Dad put a major nice-looking backboard up on the garage for me, but we quickly learned the poor materials choice by Acme backboards, who had some genius apply particleboard for 'the board' . First substantial rain came up, and it swelled from the commonly thickest PB available of 3/4", to an unbelievable, roughly 1 and 3/4 inches thick. I sh88 you not.

Dad did a tiger team analyses of the project failure, and replaced the inane PB with 3/4 ACX Plywood, and Spar-Varnished it including edges, then steel-wooled the dry varnish, then painted it all white, 'cept the orange lines around the hoop. The metal and support frame was fine. Once back-up, the board lasted 8 years that way until we moved to Colorado, and on many subsequent trips back as an adult to old friends weddings, etc., it was still hanging in their !

I had a killer left hook (as a lefty). Visiting 'away' teams.. - friends from the two subdivisions across the main drag from us... - took a few games to catch on to me as a lefty with my trick; after they picked up on it they'd smash my face typically to smithereens. Gotta look that word up.

My mom would then wearily drive me to the optician about once every two weeks with glasses in major nerd first-aid shape: - the band-aid - latex - stretched around the arm connection to the front frame....every time. The optician groaned every time he saw me until he finaly asked 'son, are you getting beat up by the same guy with same roundhouse to your left side or something ?' and I admitted - no, it was just basketball. He then explained the manly value of that endeavour to my mother so I was finally off the hook, so to speak. ...... :biggrin:

& re: the admonishment to get back to work: yes sir! ..lol working on the next ten as we speak, sir.

Speaking of various nickname versions, a person's got to be careful to 'know the person well enough' - on line anyway, and have a feel for their sense of humour.

You know I take awhile to learn that with everyone ! I do believe I have a handle on yours now, Mr. Ronerator. You likey that one GI ? Or Ronster better, or Ron, or just me shut up and call you RM.....

HERE ARE TEN NEW CLUES FOR 8:17 pm.,Sun.,JAN 25th, 2009

That last ten went in two bursts of about 5 at a time, one day apart. We are running close to one error in 20 questions now, submission-wise, not that it matters, its all just for fun anyway; but the band of regulars +/- 1 -2 each time, are getting so good you guys are frightening. One word from the song......BAM someone gets it. I am in awe (really) of all of your knowledge.

Infact, its getting tough to challenge you guys in the regular '20 albums' , w/o resorting to terrible clues immensely ambiguous like 'the' or 'She' . I won't do that to you guys, but bare with me as I carefully gauge a word as identifable to the song especially if someone likes it a lot, but takes some pondering still....I'm working on it :)

Ribbon of Darkness is one of my vistories, Leaves of Grass is one of my top fav's that Tj did, and Tattoo is on my short list of what just might be my next one! Are you reading my mind Steve?? lol Back to my iPod -- or is that GordPod?? lol ~~ Lynn

Lynn....you are exhibiting classic symptoms of clinical paranoia.....I am not reading your mind.....I AM reading your mind...... Do you know when these feelings of paranoia started ? - a major life event maybe ? .... you are going to give me all your money, real estate, chattels, corporeal and incorporeal hereditaments and you will realize none of this has happened, or connect me in any way with it......SO - I wouldn't let this coincidence on the three songs corrolating with the planned vistories bother you at all... its totally a spurious corrolation....and as far as the next vistory YOU are going to do, I'm sure you'd have a great time doing Tattoo.

Its one of his overlooked top-40 possibilities from that album IMO, and a soaring vocal and acoustic gem from the album most fans consider a 'cloaked' and underestimated classic, along with 'Whispers of the North'. In Tattoo, the vistory could be great what with the references to 'deep canyons' and......you're next vistory will be the one of mine in the que of requests that seemed to be moving closer and closer to the top of the list - 'Is There Anyone Home'...one of Gordon's best ethereal songs in his own words..and one of my 3 most favourite songs... you will do it next..... you will do it next.....you will remember none of the small white subliminal verbage in your conscious mind, but will do these things none the less.... - I am only joking..end of joke here.......(ahem) what were we saying ? -'through the green meadows, goodnight' - many topographic references that maybe some footage of a fly-over of verdant vallies and lush green meadows would be really cool....you bet that would be great actually for your next one as you said, maybe , huh ? I'm really very happy you guys are continuing vigorously with your tribute work, despite the demoralizing matters you have no need of me bringing up while you're having fun here (I hope ..lol).

Oh, also, - you have yet to fully withstand the loquacious, and long-winded excesses I fall into ......lol...... Actually - it is QUITE a coincidence those three songs versus your colleagues' and your likely next choices were to be found in the board of 10 new ones !. The Last Time I Saw Her - is absolutely correct ! what do you call a trifecta that becomes a quad-fecta er... ? lol... dunno - but you got it !

As a courtesy to all those who have allready listened to me pour my heart out over Merry many times in here, or those who wish to skip it for whatever reason, its cool; just skip down to the ole 'BACK TO BIZ' and you'll miss nothing of game consequence.

"Beneath a battered marking stone
it lies forgotten" - Lynn, the following speaks to how powerful the emotional content in your guys' vistories is, and out of courtesy, I would not ask any of you now to "suffer the loss of thy neighbor" as I did so much in the past. But, should you choose to: Oh man does that song and the vistory too, bring back hard memories. Take that as a compliment Lynn, as all references too them that I make where I speak of them eliciting difficult emotions - that speaks so well for them as mediums of emotional and artistic expression; both joyful and sorrowful, as is life, and so should any effective attempt to render the depth and breadth of the emotions in life in any way - as you folks have done so well.

And the visuals - the way the Black & White, or rather- absence of color, zero saturation, like in the forest where there is a flowering pink bush surrounded by lush greenery starts with no color, then saturation is smoothly cranked up and the color bursts forth - very effective technique with many a metaphor. Once again I find myself atempting to convey that I am not being gratuitous or disingenuous in any way when I go on about how....GOOD the vistories are.

The way they are sweet w/o being saccharin, and not convey despare w/o also hope, darkness w/o light. I easily have been able to sit and watch them, transfixed for an hour or more, on both songs I love, and songs that I like -not as much- together. The vistories might be a hard subject for you now Lynn, with the outside influences possibly pulling back like a tump line. If so, I apologize. But you speak of them with happiness and enthusiasm, so I don't think I'm loading salt with the buckshot unintentionaly.

Actually - the memories are not yet obscured with the haze that time heals hard memories with- still mourning the loss of my wife, though I try to not trivialize it by mentioning it too much in here, the way I did in months past. I also find it interesting that I am remembering more and more through rose color glasses, inferring nothing negative - just normal life, through those lenses as I file them away it seems. Not every memory can be staggeringly beautiful, but those rose lenses gently make it seem so.

This group of people in corfid is remarkably like a family in many ways, (good days and bad days, ups and downs, but GOOD people as a norm) - and boy did I need the soothing balm of family, listening to me go on and on about Merry's passing, which even self-deprecating ole' me (usually) looking back would say was perfectly normal - this whole group - all of corfid - seemed like 2000 people I could cry my heart out to in words. In fact- it was too excess as I look back at posts about 5 - 9 months old.

My somehow managing to bring it up in almost every thread for awhile I did not try or intend to, and in retrospect it bummed-out many a happy thread until I entered, and something made me think of Merry passing, I'd post, and blab blab on I went. Commonly, mine was the last post. I called myself the thread-killer for awhile, under my breath, as I NEVER joked about my loss of Merry, nor will I now, it still seems disrespecful, and I was both overly bellicose and circumspect about how I spoke of it (the loss); and how others did too, to the point of being almost impolite.

Understandable maybe, but acceptable I think only if I recognize in hindsight that I was doing that to excess, however necessary (it was) - just as every seemingly friendly ear was through the first 6 months - all the poor check-out people, neighbors, colleagues, and my friends here in town and within driving distance, or, a free long-distance cell call away - I bent their patient ears as I did in here, with nary a complaint, from anyone..., well, except sorta one.. but no matter that, I had it coming. My P.C.P. Doc said it was necessary to talk until I was blue in the face - or my patient friends et al were.....part of the process.

And even though I am ostensibly 'looking back on talking about it too much, as was needed, in fact, I am now ! So forgive me please and I'll get back to biz. One last thought - an old friend I spoke too in Ohio on the phone about it last weekend- she told me my doc's S.W.A.G. estimate of 2 -3 years was shy....she told me from family experience and some friends, she saw it take as much as 10 years, and that was not a skew, but closer to a modal. Wow, long time.... I hope its not as hard as its been over the last 9 months for 10 years.. Logically, it would ease up a little each year.. Sorry, again.

Lynn I'd watch that vistory over and over, and each time I'd flood my desk with tears; I'm not embarrassed to say. Take that as a compliment though, because that tells me that as much emotion as it still elicits speaks well of the care and emotion embedded in it. Otherwise stated - well done vistory.

Hi guys ! 8:08 here Mtn Std time Wednesday evening; what say I for-go the traditional response in short to the remaning five clues you guys all aced, in favor of me posting the new set of ten. Knowing all recent posts since the last BIG-X status board was posted were correct, I figure you'd rather I get the new ten clues up sooner than post the rhetorical final status board right now, having ascertained that all submissions were correct, including your 2nd shot MandoAnn, you guys nailed the last five ! Oh and BTW- that all-yellow post I made last night is atrocious to try and read; sorry about that.

Nice to see some past players playing again; missed ya, and we have a couple
real regulars on sabbatical; engaged in other interests for awhile, it all balances out. Just when I think interest is flagging enough that I should give the thread a rest for a month or so, BAM ! a new set of ten is nailed in 4 hours with players I have not seen for awhile ! Its the butterfly in Peking setting off a series of events that wind up causing a new blast of fast play, - chaos theory in action; then a slow time. I've learned to never think people are truly done playing and having fun; at least for the time being !

way to go..lol, FOUR whole years later, the concept has taken flight...got the idea when i saw that apple had made some sort of promotional 'all U2' pod

i dont have any pod but do have the entire GL catalogue in a playlist on iTunes on the mac...it is well over 10 hours of music (which I actually bought ie. did not download from youtube:) )

Eastern Timezone ? 6 o'clock here, 9 o'clock there - in Atlantic, two hours diff between Mrn and Eastern. Funny...when you are in reply mode you cannot read all the info such as your Delaware and time of post that I could a minute ago, thought maybe I goofed. Well back to biz

Nail some more if 'you are of a mind too" - my in-laws taught me to say that, ostensibly originating in Illinois farm country, quite south of the Windy City. 'of a morning/evening/whatever' . I picked it up naturally from them, much the same as if a man takes his cup of coffee over to the fireplace hearth, typically in his own home ;) , a guest, usually if another man, will come over and mimic the position of the co-owner of the house as the case may be; human nature I am told - to mimic the body language of someone you are talking too in an affable comversation. Interesting, that.

'Course, when I spoke w/o thinking around my folks while Dad was still around, and w/o thinking say 'of an evening', he would clear his throat unneccesarily ( one of many distinct male gestures - the older men get, the louder and more demonstrative they get, such as ritualistically making a loudish noise when they enter the room or expecially a resteraunt, that sort of thing.

Then they grow much, much older and quiet back down again; sad to watch, that. The loud, gregarious gestures and purplish blood pressure showing itself in resteraunts when two families or two couples get together, even two business people for lunch, the man will most commonly make a big to-do , and louder than the other, some say to 'assert alpha male dominance' - I say horsesh88 to that, I've seen it, and I find it to be a man over that 45 yr old hump and on the leewrd side of 50; making sufficent noises to let all those around know there is still a bull of the woods to contend with.

Funny and odd, aren't we, don't you women think so ? (eyeing possible exits with a perfunctory nod and a furtive glance she is..lol). Academic, I know. And not all men, not all situations, otherwise that starts to form the stereotype portrayed in sit-coms - the last bastion of acceptable politically correct stereotyping and consequential resultant prejudice allowed - of the male, who is almost invariably the baffon in sitcoms. Its revenge of the generations of women and suffrage I think, still getting its angst out in the open.

Mende - I am stumped on your guess for Q323. You are EXTREMELY knowledgable, but I'll be hanged if I can even find "Running" in the song Salute you submitted. Not to mention the whole phrase, or anything like it - "Running headlong to attract".

Either Wayne Francis was wrong - which Char experienced once, with suits the shade of evergreen, versus Wayne's' copy of lyrics showing "suits the sheen of evegreen' - and if you listened to it - she was correct. Give 'er another listen if you don't mind while I process others, and I'll come back to this if you are convinced still. Allrighty then ? It sounds like this is a rough memory in the vistory quest. I am sorry.

Going for a 4lane Highway tonight ?...lol..

You know, for the UA period, I think this (A Minor Ballad) and 'Softly' are two of the most beautiful songs; besides killer good melodies, and vocals with loooong lungfulls of air, and sterling vibrato that just..did...not..quit in both ! They are magnificent examples of what he could do with his voice when he chose to. I am able to hear strong vibrato when he wanted it time-wise up to the Salute album if I am not mistaken, DSR,too. EOM it started to fade to my ear. You something funny though, on the song title 'A Minor Ballad', when I first started listening as truly 'young Steve' then at 14, I did not know the vernacular from written music or formal music education in any way - just junior-high mandatory music class, and though we had a cool, 'hip' young teacher, he was 'given' a dogma-based curriculum to teach, like it or not. I did not. Well anyway, point being is that i had no idea that 'A minor' was a music tonal or key variation, still don't really...lol. and (get this) I thought "A Minor Ballad" meant "an small, unimportant ballad"- literally, and thought "why would he talk down the importance of his own work ? Very embarrassed when I found out, ( only about 5 years ago....when reading an article on music theory lol) -boy am I embarrassed. OK well I'll put ole' Big X up . Thanks !

My voice is different at 50 ('young steve' to some ppl in here ! works for me lol) than it was when I was 25 too, and I don't even smoke. I say ppl that rag on his voice changing should have their mouths erased like in the movie 'Matrix' !

I thought that clue of 'car....' would be a bug-a-boo hard one - with an american interpretation of 'a car' vs the French word car. Lucky you just did make that vistory - had the French 'car' fresh in your head , huh ? Still, hard memory on the last vistory.

Working on a two-lane Highway so far.... Hey remember that Pablo Cruise song - 'Two Lane Highway' - they were kind of a cross between the Eagles, and....maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd ? They had a clean tight band sound... but the real boiler test seams to be the live stage.

Thats where I've allways admired Gord's statement, paraphrased, that he made toward the EOM period if I recall, that "The Audience would hear live music from them that would sound like the studio album recordings" -which then meant no more live string sections in the studio,so that they could almost exactly reproduce the studio sound when playing live, as Hefferenan played synth 'strings' on the keyboard both studio and live. Sound right to you guys ? I've said it 100 times, but wouldn't it have been great - still be, to have a locally contracted union string section wherever possible ? So charge $3 more on the tickets - 2000 seats - $6,000 before overhead taken out...that kind of money could put food on the table of starving musicians huh?

I didn't ever recall a lyric starting with "Car", and I really focus on the lyrics because that's what gives me my interpretation for the vistories. Thanks to working in a bilingual environment, I do have some knowledge of French, though I seldom use it.

Yes, it did let a lot of air out of our tires. But I know that there will be a suitable "home" for these eventually. A tribute of this size can't stay hidden away forever. So I continue to work (that's definitely the wrong word for this!) away at the remainder of the repertoire and file them away for when the time comes that they can be shared again. Now it's at a much easier pace. I just finished "Go My Way" last night. It's such a pretty little song. And as my husband would tell you -- it keeps me out of trouble! ;)

well formerlyLavender, I am sorry to say, in this case the clue is a definatively caps-on to stear you guys to the intended song. I'll give a 2nd clue in the x-files. Its a fun answer. I surely don't mean to be strict on this; it rarely ever comes up. but this was the only way verbatim - caps and all in the middle of verse - that I could stear you folks to this....atypical song for Gord to some.... beloved to others due to subject nature, and just plain fun to even more ! So don't let it get ya down - rethink it in terms of: the fact that it is capitalized in the middle means - its a proper noun, and therefore.........???? hmmm :) IT HAS TO DO WITH SOMETHING GORD USED TO DO A LOT. There's the 2nd clue :biggrin: I'll tell you what though, I love that song- That Same Old Obsession very very much...its in my personal top ten. It is so....relaxing. That whole album was, despite the great toe-tappers...Lazy Morning et al incl You submitted song over-road the toe-tappers for me to be a relaxing album, and some downright cheerful songs - 'You Are What I am', 'I Can't Let Love Defend Me' consequently that akbum is in my top 5. I appreciate you letting me know as you did that mentioning the vistories is not a sore spot ! As i indicated to Lynn in similar words, its my opinion that your project has so much inertia or momentum; you are an unstoppable force comprised of these works of 'live art' that compliment Lightfoot's work so nicely, like 'hand in glove' to quote a portion of Lightfoot's 'A Lesson in Love', one of the few love or strongly not like songs.. lol...of his, as it seems among the active corfidites. I love it.

It is one he describes live as another ethereal song ie 'Is There Anyone Home' and 'a walk down shrink alley' lol. The former - Any one Home, was a reqest I made, and seemed to be moving up the que in the tribute channel as shown anyway, I sure hope that means its close to production ! OK Ron I figure 1/2 the folks do too at times ! uh-oh, I am having a blabberty-fit on a philosophical approach to the game being just for fun, with non competitiveness. If you want to by-pass my brain-sneeze, simply drop down this post to the good ole' Yellow BACK TO BIZ below ! ...lol

How are you today Lynn ? You're well on your way to a majority victory in this list. whoops - I caught myself...this a only a game for fun w/o winners or losers. But... I remind myself, as a group we do not want to try and engender a competitive situation, and the all-too-common unfortunate ends it can take. I speak only of my view point; I think I ought to simply speak out in my oft mini - blah-blah's and at times BIIIG bla-blahs,(sorry Lynn) we are here to have fun first and foremost ! so I choose to mid-course self-correct to speaking much less with cloying sports analogies and cliche'd competitive rousting locker-room motivational speaches.....

In turn then, speak of what I read into Lightfoot's philosophy via my own attempt at interpreting his via his lyrics; complicated thought it may be, he speaks more of simply happiness and sadness, joy and sorrow, and the occassional in-between ethereal purely philosophical or spiritually-focused songs, (to name a few), which he has far more the eloquence than I in. Nor would it be as a group norm reccomended to go into the three things we are taught to avoid talking of in social settings. The third becomes ambiguous in many families. In mine I'll simply state the most common fist two frequently taught: I'll avoid politics &religion, and add avoiding a competitive mentality, as I have mildly been pushing in the blah-blah block area above x-files.

Rather, I'll avoid those land-mine strewn and innappropriate-for-this-thread subjects, and sports cliches, and lame tired old motivational rah-rahs I caught myself slippping into (the latter two). I will speak enthusiastically of simply having ....a breather...a good time w/o consequences. Put simply... while the thread does hit the gas pedal on heavy thinking, it is for simply having fun; no winners, no loosers, just fun gaming and mild escapism, all admirable and I hope no down-side - pure intelligent fun. This all pertains again simply to me catching myself on rolling down the wrong tracks -rah-rah sports metaphors and sense of competitiveness in my talkety block areas, and here in the unfortunate recipient of my ex-cogitations in what could be a simply be a 'yes !', or 'no...sorry response' - to your submission oTJ. Sorry about this; I had to get it out of my system. I saw my blah-blah blocks between 'UPDATE' and the x-file block getting strewn with cliches and non germane discourse to...just..having...fun.. I have to do this periodically oTJ, or I suffer a mind implosion, and all who suffer in a ten-minute radiius !..lol..

I also understand about 'who's transcribing' - because a LOT of Gords verse go like this: Cool words cool words, Cool words cool words.

And almost everyone at one point or another assumed the comma in the middle, as in the verse from Miguel, ws the end of a verse, especially when just listening (the admirable way) - but looking up in lightfoot.ca to checjk your answer is now considered absolutely fine to do. I know a lot of his songs sound like a verse end where Lightfoot.ca shows commas. Anyway - if another 'offical EMP release of lyrics or something like that shows them stacked narrrow and tall, with commas at the end, it;d work. But for now, we gotta go with Lightfoot.ca. One time Char caught an error in Lightfoot.ca - in the RobinHood song everyone is embarrassed by ( men in tights) - the song clearly said when heard: with suits the shade of evergreen. But lightfoot.ca said it was the 'sheen' of everbreen. So its been disproved once to my knowledge. hEY oH WELL another clue.... you'll get it. for Q327, I'll give

- The intended song is one of Gord's 'most ethereal songs' by his words, and Kefara found it very interesting - with Gordon using a literary tool to indicate relationships love lostas ghosts - that appear in so many songs, he also said the song had very cool chords in it, and this song had chords Lightfoot had 'never used before, very cool, very cool' . And Jenney nails another , well, not so ODD a word as the ones above, but unusual word in a love song. I'd say 'Anything for Love' is a love song, wouldn't you ? Its more a song about love, than a love ballad ostensibly sung to a woman in the song, does that make sense ? Hard one, and Jenney nails it again. She's in the habit of doing 4 out of 10 !

Hi everyone - as usual on a blabberty-rich page, if you wish to view only game-consequential info, jump on down to the ole' 'BAK TO BIZ' :)

Howdy oTJ - are you up late like me or early to rise ? = Lessee here - you're in Eastern Std. - so its 7:45 am out there right ? You're no where near Easterly enough to be in the primarily Maritime Province-dominated Atlantic time Zone as I recall the "Time Zone Map" - while jagged for various reasons, hmm it essentially runs at change zone every 15 degrees of Longitude/Hour - and you are you are very roughly 30 degrees Easterly of me (I'm in Mtn. Std. Time Zone), and hence you should be in Eastern.

Then again there's common sense, which arrives at the same conclusion. But its more fun when I am bored to make it more complicated. Thats why when I consult I like to charge hourly ! j/k..!

I could pull up the map, but people would think I am obsessive about maps....well I am ( looking furtively in all directions to make sure no one hears) - not obsessive in the clinical sense, but 'enamoured of' in the most, er.....admirable way.

Here's the worst it gets. I deliberately open a 75 Year old Nat Geo atlas, or RandyMac gilt-edged pages, gold-stamped Title on the cover and binder edge, and when it opens, with low-wattage oblique lighting, the dust rises just so...and then (this is the worst part)... you know how love the aroma of your father's pipe-tobaco, or good new harness leather ? - And BTW - its best to read a good Atlas in a full-grain leather club chair, that adds the good leather aroma !

Well, in that healthy frame of mind, since I love maps, and my father taught me the love of maps, enough that I chose it as a career, and I love maps, and atlases... so I open the atlas, and, well, inhale the aroma of old linen-based, high-quality bond; high-poundage-guilt-edged paper....lol.... it smells like....once-in-a-lifetime-trips, open it to the center page - and Western Europe at the stitched center. And I flip through the pages, look at the map without reading the legend, and guess the projection based on techy-stuff I won't bore you with, er... I'm probably boring you now !

okkk guessing what the gatefold map will be - usually a 2-page Robinson Projection of the World, unless its made before about 1944 or so, have to double check but he was a Professor of Geodesy and Cartography at Univ. of Wisc., Madison. He was a WWII Bomber Navigator because of his background, and the Robinson Projection he derived to portray a more equitable map for geo-political reasons, as the grossly-over-used and ill-used Transverse Mercator Projection (its meant ONLY for navigation, as great-circle arcs are straight lines on it, but it comically and grotesquely distorts and enlarges land mass size, and consequentially makes the extreme Latitudes i.e. > 65 degrees N or S look like stretched out laundry hanging outside frozen stiff in its distortion so bad its funny.

It also for "political" reasons (Trans Mercator) had its std. parallels set at 40 N and 40 South, so scale would be exact running right through around Germany by memory, Gerardus Mercator's home country in any event.
Handy scale exact for them in central Europe, (and Boulder Colorado!), but
its so bad even ole Gerardus stopped at 85 degrees N and S, and thought - "hmm thats too bad up there and down there... and who cares about Siberia and Alaska in the arctic Circle, and that it makes Greenland look almost as big as Australia he he we'll make 'em create a polar map projection for 85 - 90 N and S - and ...er...about 200 years later we did...the Polar Stereographic Projection.

A good compromise on a equal-area map projection for general display of the world is either Robinson's, or Goode's Interrupted Homolisine Equal Area Conformal... - the one that looks like someone cut an orange peel running up and down on lines of longitude, but stopped cutting at the equivalent of 85 degrees...surprise.. and then flattened-out the whole thing to dry (a 'developed' map projection) ....but we don't get to cut em and smoosh them, we have to use pages and pages of math..... you gotta love it ! Well now surely I have bored you... if you were up late versus up early, this ought to have helped you get asleep lol......

Yes, just blindly looking say in Lightfoot.ca would be a very large undertaking.. . But the method you speak of -the 4 or so guesses as candidates, then validating one of the 4 in lightfoot.ca - very smart. Even at that, I say there's a reason the regular and sporadic player's list in total is a short one. I think when all this started out - I was giving 4 -6 increasingly shorter clues - but they were 6 words , 5 words, etc., on down to the ultimate ...lol hard clue -two words or so !

Or one, if definative..... and more people played. But when, as explained in the next paragraph, the player count went down, what in fact preceeded that er...factoid by timing alone w/o yet inferring any corrolation, was that clue length grew shorter, and the player's roster grew..shorter. It might have been only a spurious corrolation, or, as I postulate below (sounds like something a man doesn't want to have done at the doctor...lol) - there could have been a few reasons I think interesting myself to overthink and overanalyze.....but who cares ? lol.... its only cyber-space - in theory, infinite.

In practice, while memory and disk are now cheap in relative terms, but remain the only limitation to ..infinite. (?). Even I would object to post lengths that long ;~) . And.... just because I logistically can cheaply (relative term only) do long threads til 'late, or turn in early and start very early, either way, my point is while I can write long thinking-out-loud posts, doesn't make them polite to do too much. As long as I can get my point out, I still need to work on more on shorter, more concise posts. Hence below a "4th option" in keeping with that concept ;) lol..

I'd guess for 4 reasons the player count decreased over time. When the game was new, players in comparitive droves came in and gave 'er a try with a polite word and either liked it and stayed, or came back later when the page was not a maze of head-ache-inducing colours (actually Char they have allways been white, you are suffering flashbacks; from the late 60's lol...) or were a peek in, and saw it was not their cuppa, and said or inferred politely a 'no-thanks' because - big theorist here lol NOT:

1st -to simply check it out -the thread- with a polite try shot at it, and then a polite 'sorry no thanks', or ...we just never saw them again..lol..

2nd: the game got increasingly harder, due to: as the play started going so fast in keeping with those who were excelling in it, or -enjoying it- more, it was very hard for me to keep up with, and stay ahead of the curve, and so it seemed warranted by virtue of player's speed to cut down clue length, & the clues shortened to 1-2words, and that further either cut down on those who were able to play that fast, or just enjoyed it still and would answer when one or two struck their fancy, or no longer enjoyed it at that rate maybe ? - I dunno

3rd. perhaps was the initial novelty alone of a new thread of the type with an intrinsically high 'check it out' nature - not from any of my doings - the quiz formats, while different over time had a long history, and people remembered older ones, and naturally poked in I guess, and after checking it out, the majority, in fact, IMO simply chose that that type of game was not of interest, however well-adapted to it they may have been, by virtue of how the valleys and hills in their grey matter was arranged, not how much brain power they posessed. Rather, what 'type' of leisure thinking did they prefer I guess. OK.... their may have been a couple of people "not up to the task" early-on, to be kind, but danged if I know who !..lol....j/k, its been my experience that Lightfoot fans inherantly tend to be ..well, smart !

So, what I'm saying is, nowadays, you and other regulars plus the shortlist of faces we have periodically pop in and out ( & much welcomed I might add), are the only people that (can and want to, or can but do not enjoy) mentally process(ing) info in this fashion for entertainment purposes - they do complex things at work - and want to come home, relax, and watch Benny Hill and Red Green !

...lol., in so far as those who have tried -I think you guys are some of the the most adaptive minded, or posessed of thinking patterns that happen to be suited to this, and want to, cause there are plenty just as sharp minded that have played, and politely peeled out, never to be seen again in this thread. I'm surely not saying other corfidites are not as smart; not at all.

Rather, I am talking about regardless of intellect level, its I think a particular mode of thought that some posess and or simply enjoy, while other people posess other strengths and varying modes of thought. Not better or worse - just.different. If the game matches the favoured or strongest thought patterns in the non-player-the shoe may fit, but they don't care for the style. I think thats the brilliant metaphor, I was searching for. Hah-says the little Machiavellian cynic on my shoulder. They probably just thought the game sucked ! lol

They could be called by K-Tel (Gord Fordbid) "The 1 CD WITH JUST 10 HITS ? CAUSE WE'RE CHEAP, AND ARE GOING TO ISSUE A "Ten of his Greatest hits - Volume II" CD.....lol

Because there will be some mis-communiication in this first (2nd, really) attempt at a theme of a different sort; be it my poor wording, or a mis-heard or mis-understood individual reading of my words, lets not focus on that in the end, if you focus on one thing focus on this: They are ten OF his biggest songs. Not THE ten, and you'll be fine.Note to all: This list of ten is the second in a short series thus far of very mild twists on regular lists. I hesitate to call them 'Theme' lists, because they are not like: one list is sailing or boat songs, the next maybe love ballads,etc. This is much simpler, but easy to convey w/o ambiguity. All clues this time are in ....word,word .... format, and note the comma is in every clue. They all appear that way in lightfoot.ca, so for the die-hard 'listen in your head' only purists, you may wish to add the resource of looking in Wayne's world lyrics.
HERE IS A MAJOR, RE-ASSURING MAIN CLUE TRUE OF ALL.

Every single song is one of his most famous songs, on either Cashbox/Billboard terms, or the couple songs from UA period, which I do not know the airplay time they got, but we would 'likely' all agree they are major, major Lightfoot songs. I'll further help you by saying that every single song was recorded on album sessions from '69 - '83. 3 of the songs came from the UA period, and were re-recorded IN GG1 UA re-dux sessions, to make the statement still true, of re-recorded dates range. In fact, 8 of the 10 songs are in GG1. Of those 8, 5 are 'as-is' (2nd LP for us turntable oldsters), and the other 3 from GG1 were LP disc1 re-recordings of major UA period songs. So, with 8 in GG1, of the remaining two, 1 is one his most famousof all time songs, the other got significant airplay but was not a $/smash hit maybe 4 years later 'or so'.

I am not representing my selection as being 'The quintessential ten songs of Gordon Lightfoot' at all. But its damn close in commercial terms - airplay on the radio terms. A couple of his BIG songs from UA time either didn't fit in "10" clue, or the ....word,word.... did not work for that song. Simply the 'facts' I stated about them are true in objective terms. Its safe to say they were all major songs for him, I would maintain safely. Not all of his 'major' songs or career-defining quintessential songs would either fit in a list of 10, nor do all the songs we would likely narrow down to his 10 most 'famous' or 'big' songs lend themselves to this clue format.

In fact, it was hard among his "Quintessential, fans want to hear them songs every setlist" songs to find cases of this clue format. I do guarantee, per Lightfoot.ca, all song clues are correctly in word,word format, and will be found that way. It actually maybe the easiest, or the hardest list we've done. My money is on easiest. Just remember "hmmm his HUGE songs" But lets face it, no song after '76 was a huge song, at least in the U.S. . I know he gets more airplay for each album out in Canada, from what I've seen. But only ONE song is after '76, anyway. Not a big concern. If you guys like this when done. Please feel free to say - 'Hey a, lets do a set of ten clues that are 'so on and so forth' , like mayne next ten we do either same old format, OR... we try - every song in the next ten pertained CLEARLY to failed love or relationship in the end.

We can't get to subjective by definition. Objective differentiation of the songs could be really fun. I'll post an 'x' for you and Dave, er..somehow lol ! Speaking of Dave, and the fire around your area Mende - I gotta get something off of my chest on wildland fire. its just real important to me. The more knowledge I spread about it, the better I feel I am doing what all the training the gov sent me too for ! Bear with me hear -

Mende - yes, I am sure glad you're OK, definately. You and Dave - I saw that 114 F heat you were having on my windows widget in Melbourne - thought of you, and then bamm - there's the fire. Man, wildfire amd I are old enemies. I worked for a branch of state Gov 20 years so far, and 3 in Federal. Point is, I worked in wildland/urban interface GIS layers/programs in all 3. Each of the 4 agencies I worked for did a start-up project of Wildland Fire Mitigation. Up at the Boulder office I mapped for 10 years and 4 fires.

No point naming them; but The first we contained in 6 acres, 2nd 12 acres, 3rd 114. No 2 factor in fire spread is slope - upwards - hear rises, and all those trees not properly thinned out burst in a first-through flash-braze that charcoals the outside of the tree, leaving the core intact/alive. Its nature's way of thinning slash from forests - very controversial - when they let Yellowstone run naturally that way. Now its lusher than its ever been, with more wildlife populations, nitrogen and potash added to the soil - miraculous, but at what cost ?. We'd tell people we'd help them thin out and clear slash - ladder fuel up to 6 ft high. Few ever took us up on it with the State Regional Forester's help. The Rule of thumb on thinning was take the tree diameter in inches, say 8inches, use that number, and add 10 to it, 18, andthats the optimum minimum spacing there - 18 feet.

Too many people wanted trees around their deck - my Dad included. I begged him to do even the 'donut' thin around their deck - keep 10 -20 ft aesthetic circumference around the house (he had a wrap around deck & view at 10,000 ft) and then do a 'whitewall' outside that 10 - 20 ft ring against the deck, clear an area outside the ring around the deck equal to the height of the taller trees in the area - his elevation made that number less than 30 feet - subalpine firs, engelman spruce, lodgpole pine.
He finally did it, and I got the regional state forester to help him. Then I worked on him to get a jell pack, a foam/jell sprayer to wear like a backpack (looks like scuba gear with no tubes to the face, but it did have a mask to keep blow-back from the face; mildly caustic substance when wet. When heat hits it in the roof, and preferable siding sprayed, too - since he had 12" cedar lap siding, it emits haldon gas to snuff the oxygen out, and is a fire barrier when dry. He at least got the cedar shake roof - a no-no in fire country on a big-a88 slope he was at the TOP of from 1200 feet elev down to the highway. Forester told him that wa the smartest $240 he ever spent.

Sure enough, big fire came thru in the high mountainous canyon to the south, he was in the North ST Vrain Canyon top; and the fire was in the Middle St. Vrain Canyon. It could easily have gone up and over. I've seen fire shoot what looks eerily like a live being thinking - shoot cannonballs of fire in a big arc between canyonwalls, with a thick rope of fire behind the 'ball'. It is weird. Fortunately all the fires I worked, no ever got seriously injured, including the one that made me the maddest. Down....at an office to the south.... where I worked 8 years, I'd worked on gov sharing a software called 'fire' easy enough. The Marines at Camp St Le Jeune in South Carolina sent me their 'unworkable' software for wildland mitigation. Of the over 10,000 fires/year in Colorado - 95% are caused by lightning, and of those, over 98% are self extinguishing. But all it takes is one in the wrong area, like urban/slope interface, and woosh - upslope. That happened in Colorado's biggest fire in history ....down south.... The Heyman fire. In our jurisdiction, where the program I rewrote could have helped. I was just sick over it.

I'd re-written the software before it, too port it to our plaltform, and to change the grid growth model to something called 'Huygen Wave Propagation' I borrowed from my physics days at csu - and it would show a real-world pattern of growth down-wind and up-slope, with live 6 ft and 20 ft fire 'antenna's' in 12 location around that county. The little towers fed live wind speed at those 2 heights - critical for fire spread, along with humidity, wind direction, temp, and the forester took weekly fuel compaction and moisture content readings at those twelve location. But wind is the biggy we wanted. When done - you could 'light a fire' in the program - feed it real-time wind data, and it would show an elliptical growth pattern. It has in other states proven to save millions in home damage, and more importantly - lives of the landowners, and the hearty soles that fight the fire.

Then I mapped the fire probability from running the program about 20 times in the..area.. I was in, and identified the hottest problem was a terraced, tiered custom home development that with only ONE road in and out (same) - mtn subdivision went right up the toe of slope wall, hairpin turns in the road matching the terracing. Its like someone said 'lets see how we could build a sub that would burn in a heartbeat' - I just don't get it. Naivete I know over money and profits, but at what expense. The area EOM Director I worked with on the project had the authority to command fire dep't, sherrifs, and all County agencies until feds took over, and he said " one road only, in and out same road huh ?" - he said then "I'll build them a road allright, if a fire comes through, I'll take 3 D9'er dozers and bulldoze a road out at the other end. Dumb-a88es".

Then, after I was forced to take long-term medical leave/disability, the fire came. I won't name it cause I don't want bad blood with the agency. But then again its a public agency - out taxes support them. Problem is they did not implement the program live. The EOM director quit over it. They thought it needed another set of eyes needed to comb the program because I was fighting doing it with a head injury and more I'll not bore you with. Then the big fire came, turned into over 120,000 acres (44,560 sq ft/acre- here, Dave). And I was fighting mad, helpless. Well - two offices over time have been putting me through wildland fire mitigation-analyst training from the state, and I am one weekend seminar away from certification via a 2 x 8/hr test - 8 hours fed, + 8 hours state.

I'm going to see that program run yet,. It'll be the only Huygen wave pattern program in the US we know of.Camp Le Jeune wants a copy of that version back ! You bet - its gov't sharing the way it ought to be. We'll bollox the next big one if I can help it.

Hearing about that fire Dave got me 'all fired up' over the memories. Fire is the most uncanny, living/breathing thing I have ever seen . It makes roaring noises, sucking sounds, it almost has a carrier sound under the din - its like a slow growl- scary, and weird....

phew - thanks for letting me get that off my chest ! Real glad you OK. I hope the casualties stay.. don't grow - sorry to hear of it...

Q350: Canadian Railroad Trilogy "A drink to the living, a toast to the dead". I'm pleased to see Joveski survived Australia's worst ever bushfire day last Saturday. The death toll in our state Victoria is 108 & expected to be much higher. Many people died at Kinglake, just 30 miles from Melbourne. The fires have destroyed several towns (including Marysville, Narbethong & Flowerdale), 750 homes, 350000 hectares of land, etc. More towns are under threat now, including Beechworth & Stanley in north-eastern Victoria. It appears several of the fires were deliberately lit & the authorities are hell-bent on finding & charging the culprits. Victoria was more vulnerable to bushfires than ever before, after 10 years of drought, the last month without rain & last week several days in the mid-40s degC (around 110degF). Late summer & plenty of tinder-dry fuel for bushfires. On Saturday, Melbourne had its highest temperature on record (46.4degC/116degF) & north winds up to 100Km/h (60mph). The flames were up to 10 storeys high & crossed paddocks etc in seconds. Ironically, parts of Queensland in north-eastern Australia are currently suffering from major floods after record rainfall!

Yea Dave - above in Mende's submission - I mentioned the 114 F I saw in Windows weather widgets I have for 12 cities. I've never seen temp that high in Melbourne - since I've been watching. We use acres over here for no-metric ( I know I know lol ) - I did a quick conversion on 1 hectare = 2.471 acres in imperial units,and came up with (I'm tired right now, but) -I got 864850 acres, divided by 640 acres/sq mile (not including longitudinal convergance..or spherical excess - only about 1arc second /75 sq mles - so that factor is 18" spheroidal excess, not worth the calc further for fire area, it would make the area smaller,,, but the convergance is -a bout 52 feet per across the top of a 6 mile x 6 mile USPLSS Township (theoretical - they never measure out that way)36 acre township at my latitude) comes to 1,351 sq miles not incl convergance.

That's big big big. I am really sorry to hear that. And that total area in sq miles converts to (by sq rt) c 36.8 miles square (on edge, eg 36 miles x 36 miles)- not square miles. Thats the size of many "average" counties in forested Colorado. That is BIG .... wow....and all those lives. And people's homes. We have a pretty agressive wildland fire mitigation program up and down the front r ange hear and down in the Rampart rangfe where I am....but both counties I have worked in are in Colorado's "red zone for top fire probability" - lots of lightning, lots of forest on high slopes - and as you said - canyions wals to arc/jump across - once you see that - no movie effect impresses you very much, huh ?

Dave (and Mende) - I read your recount again today clearer-head than this morning, after getting some odd-hours sleep. I noticed much more this read, and more accurately. So if I understand right - the fire is....over ? - It was contained around last saturday - 2 days ago or 9 ago ? And Mende I am so sorry to hear of what must have been losses of SOMEBODY you knew, with a death toll over 100 in your state alone alone ? And - it was a brushfire - I mis-read it as a foothills upslope fire earlier. . I hope all is settled soon and the mourning, and the rebuilding of lives and homes can begin proper once everyone knows - it sounded like there was still some....info to come in. I take it its contained ?

I won't go on like the above two tomes of mine - it just home hard I think largely because I have that working predictive model of where a fire will go in progress. The fire we had some years back where I live right now close to- in the rampart range foothiils near the toe, I think the memory of that , and the tolls (wildland, inmmense, wildlife habitat gone) but fortunately to my knowledge there was only one death - from one of the 'Hot-shot' elite SmokeJumpers in the fire.

They flew in from all over the country, and to date - there still is not a working fire predictive model program IN USE. ... but they lay waiting. Little consolation to that solitary smokejumper's family- it didn't take him til later, when heat and smoke-scorched lung-tissue caused pnemonia - and they lost him. That fire double-backed as it can, but the predictive model with live winds and weather info could have warned them. Last told, the Forest Service only has a quadrangle-by-quad model, that scarcely tells them anything, only when a fire (with no live data) starts, it roughly takes a shot at 'which quarangle it might go in next" - little help to fire-fighters here.

And today' MSN home page Highlight news is: 'Don't 'Hassel' the Hoff ?' - where are our heads at in the Journalism world ? And one way or another - I am ashamed I missed the news of the whole thing til your 2 posts.
Sounds like slope was not a catalyst in brushlands, but ole number one in wildland fire - wind - was a HUGE factor there. I am so sorry to hear of all your personal losses if any, and for all of your states' losses . We tend not to have threm spread into developed lands here - our real wildland-fires fought w/o human loss most times is in great part from the fact that we have a huge lightning rod on our 2nd highest peak here, Devil's head... That mtn. and the highest - Thunder Butte - got named for a reason, but most lightning -lit fires are self regulating. They mostly occur - a great propensity - up in the foothills proper, where few people live, except for Roxborough. MOST of the time.

But no chances are taken around the ill-advised slope-terraced interface developments, where immense efforts were the only factor that saved the admonished owners - who had to be ordered to vacate. We've been lucky in that regard, and I say lastly how sorry for all the lives and homes lost. Well l there I shot my nouth off again....lol... I do hope the smoke settles w/o further loss.

I agree with charlene and jj that the "comma rule" must be enforced. I think it was thoughtful of geosteve to consider granting joveski a 'break' due to the catastrophic events unfolding in his country. but hey.....I had a flat tire this morning (messed up the whole day) and I'm not expecting any special treatment.

Hi Lynn, I may be talkin a little funny from the neck-stretchin' canceled at the last minute when truth, honesty, and the AMERICAN/CANADIAN/AUSTRALIAN way saved the blameless ! commute flusteration! i hope it didnt happen in too bad a spot...i share your &%*& pain from my nightmare 2 weeks ago and my humour (laffing at life's slaps in the face) is what kept me cool, ok semi-cool...in my case it was an alternator suddenly shot...so my hazard lights wouldnt even work and i was in highway off ramp with no shoulder to pull off onto...it was almost dark, dangerous scene...if your was even in the slightest a similar experience, you deserve special treatment...award this man a bonus point, Judge geoIto!

me and dave are fine and will be fine!. the closest fire is 30 mins drive away from me. 173 people so far counted for. it was cold enough to wear long sleeves today - the winds are the problem now. some fires are still burning and most were a case of arson.

my more distant high school friend passed away today... he chose to stay in the house.

Mende - yea the weather widget in windows shows you down to 65 F right now. What a change. I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of your old friend. I guess a guys gotta do what he thinks best, but here the EOM or Firemarshall will mandatorily vacate a person if so ordered.. Any way - I'm glad you 2 are fine, and the weathers cooled down. Arson ! Boy thats a minority of cases here, with two significant exceptions - one crazy man they call the 'mattress man' he roams around on donated money, and then pickes a place to sleep and throws his mattress down on the ground. Only problem is, last time he lit fire to his mattress soaked in kerosene/coal oil, ,lit it, and drove away. He got thrown in prison for that. Other was a ....forest ranger lady, who through unclear events admitted to starting a fire herself.

Like you say, back to biz. I'm up-to-date on the X-files above - and 2 are waiting for an answer...... :)

Yes jj - you are a man of generosity. I've been thinking of a brass-coated 4-way tire iron, OR an icon of a flat tire for his signature - sort of an Avatar w/o the function ! LOL.....sorry for that bad day Ron. Well, check the boards, Dave got it after I re-read Mende's Lightfoot.ca verse - no comma my mistake. As fas as going easy on Ron or any body, I'm as friendly as I can be, but can give no special favors ! Only when I am duped into one by my own stupidity, and or crossed eyes lol.....

At least the tires aren't split rims.....you ever see one of those fly off the rotator-style bead-breaker tire remove and reinstall on a rim job ? Whe a new learning employee saving for college does not yet know what split rims are, and the boss is on vacation, that young naive boy can have his head taken off...literally.., by a split rim from a semi that stopped at the Conoco I worked at in High School. I survived, but was told I was lucky, The driver chose to tell me afterwards, full of malcontent sarcasm - you know the type - amused and full of cinicism by my naivete on split rims, .... afterwards he said 'Son, those are meant be to done in a protective cage - that rim'll take a body part off of you, or two A HAHAHAHA. I lost it, rare rare thing for me, and yelled at him ' you mean you knew I was in danger, and din't tell me ? You son of a bi88!!!'

Yeah, reel funny fella, while you watched me try to use a conventional pleumatic tire buster.... and it did fly off.... AND THEN Not a week later an entire battery, charging on the quick charger was going, with the (then) removable caps tp let excess heat and bubbling gases dissipare during a hot charge - the guy that set it up had had a three beer lunch and feelin no pain, he forgot to do the battery out in...... the 'battery shed', away from workers for just that reason. That was still in the day when you had to add electrolyte acid to all new batteries, they came dry.

When it blew up - right smack dab in front of my face, and I mean everything totally in shards and acid skyhigh, right 2 feet from my face, my overalls were soaked in acid which I immediately took off, and ran to a co worker, and said ' do you see any acid on my face ? I don;t feel any...probably will in an hour..... and i went and rinsed my whole head in the OSHA required emreg shower head that USED to be required, but there turned out, despite my face not 2 feet from the explosion, kneeling at same level while cold-tuning a VW for elevation....it was truly miraculous I had not a single burn.

Thats why old real 'service stations' with smiling speedy service, check your oil sir ?-type service long gone..... wore wool coveralls or pants and jacket - its acid resistant. Learned that from my Dad who had the same thing happen to him when HE was saving for college lol.....

LOL Sore subject Lynn the neck is a 'wee bit stretched, but within the bounds of what is incumbent upon me' I have been stretched on various axes, some on the complex plane, therefor I do not exist anymore in Euclid's world. But at least existentialy, I'm alive. kicking, and having fun ! LOL ROF Thanks Lynn, I needed that. Puts a simple human mistake in perspective. But, conversely, when a person puts themselves in a position of being the one to declare right or wrong, I fully understand that that person has to be held to a higher standard of minimizing errors; its the nature of the beast. Because, and I know this is no revelation to you Lynn, but you've offerred what is in fact the first humerous and non-bullwhipping post, even though in reality the others have, on a deeper level ,still been meant to be no harm intended, with imbedded humour predicated on what now are long-standing relationships in the game - where we can criticize for all appearnces to the casual observer, but supporting that dialogue is a long-standing good humour, ....its cool.. - all the posts in general.

I do particularly appreciate your post especially , Lynn, it has had the most 'feel-better' quality to it about a simple mistake of mine. However, I do understand all the others, and they are well meant and are founded on long-standing premises of understood foundations in good natured humour, so no harm no foul by me being called out on the carpet; as I have assumed the task of saying yay or nay on others thoughtfully submitted songs, that carry with them, depending on the person and how far their heart is out on their sleeve, that persons self-esteem in essence being submitted as well.

My mistakes, in the greatest distinction I know of between their human error versus mine, is best illustrated I think in this concept: assuming we are all on a level playing field of skill , which I believe we are, but when they err, they do not cause others grief or potential hard-to-swallow recrimination, as opposed to when I err, quite likely DO cause occassional sunken esteem for a moment here and there; not usually, but by definition my mistakes DO effect other people intrinsically, there's don't. And there is the best reason I know, accept, and undestand as the basis for why I have to be more careful, more double-checked, and frankly be da88shure about my call, as it stands to effect others. No other approach would be considered thoughtful of me to assume.

So no real harm at all, but the sting when they are declared wrong, and further justifiably indignant if I call them wrong in error of mine incorrectly, versus their sumbissions rarely at all, by definition, hurt others, and unintentionally make comments that pertain to their skill which I NEVER intend, but it can be taken that way by my poor wording.

You know, over time, I do know that when you consider this many posts, pushing a thousand; and how many views, around 13,000; correspondingly the number of players has progressed inversely to the numbers "in the audience" over time, expressed above. I firmly believe that, as much more than a compliment, but a FACT, that this progressive dwindling of players which has pretty-much stabilized currently, and we are enjoying the highest level of play than ever before. Moreover - while everyone has different strengths, THIS group has an uncanny ability to solve the hardest clues I can come up with wthout resorting to 'too simple of predicates and words so vague' as to be ubiquitous throughout Lightfoot's and anyone's music -words like 'the, it, she, he. them, go, gone, etc etc' you know what I mean.

I guess what I am trying to say is, this group currently, always missing a few come and go faces that share this quality I'm speaking of (OhLinda , Mandoann,oTJ, and a handful of others that come and go which is cool) combined with the core regulars I generally assume will be there; I've observed over time the 'thinning" if you will has been in part....some have left over time for simple level of interest, and many other reasons not based on insufficient skills. But I do think the ones that did stay (survive lol) are, broadly speaking, of the highest skill level in this game's unique type of skill required. No disrespect or diminishing of players who've departed largely for good over time intended whatsoever.

No doubt many of them have highly refined skills in other areas; or while posessed of this game's skills, there interest simply has not been held for as long as these loyal players have. But the fact I'm dancing around I say now, despite fear of unintentionally offending anyone, is that you guys in here, plus some of the come and go semi-regulares, are of the most distilled and boiled-down HIGHEST skill level this game has ever experienced. It is ironically very challenging to come up with clues that challenge them ! I believe the regulars and semiregulars, the players we all know, out of just under 2000 corfidites, in this game are, dare I say it, the creme of the creme in the necessary skills for this game. Other members of corfid are either not interested, yet capable of the skill level the game is at now, or have other equally impressive if not greater skills, or are simply less frequent posters that enjoy reading more than interacting.

Anyway - my compliments guys. And to referee simply the game rules applicability (not overlapping in any way Char's *real* authority) I simply say yay or nay based on the game structure I assembled. And it is incumbent upon me to hold my mistake level to a strict minimum, as stated because my statements directly effect others. OK I'll stop there, having caught myself in a circular beg-the-question logical phallacy. Here's to ya guys !

Yes, I was worried about that I noted in the beginning - I believe I said with the 'NEW LIST OF 10 SPECIAL ADDITION' that this was experimental, - and I figured it would either be the easist thus far - 2 errors of mine notwithstanding, or the hardest - esopecially when I mis-spel heart as heat.... all things considered - this was actually among the faster sets we've had. The fastest have been like pyrhanna at feeding time - 3-4 hours flat. This was one in large part was about- at most - 2 partial days the way I read 'em. I appreciate the thoughtful input Ron. I hope you have no flats in the near future, (AND jj NO OFF RAMP ELECTRIC ALL OUT W/O FLASHERS, NO BERM - HE MUST HAVE BEEN BALANCED PRECARIOUSLY ON THE CONCRETE DELIMETER, WAITING TO JUMP ON DEMAND ..LOL.. )

I sympathize with both of you. Did you see the 'split-rim' story above ?
That'd be my funniest car-related story of mine.

Funniest story of mine in general, in the midst of otherwise dire straits - as jj said when he was on the exit ramp no lights at dusk, this is on the slim light-side of the Mountaineering accident. No therapeutic release in this post for me, just an actual funny moment in the middle of the maelstrom.

There I was , as I have told some allready the whole survival story, but not just this funnier moments in this scene, ....so there I was, hanging upside down, impaled on the Krummholts Tree's iron-like branch spiking upwards. The spike was strong enough to hold MY WEIGHT AND PACK - lignum vitae-like wood. I was a sight on what locals call the 'Methusela Trees' - completely denuded by wind (the tree lol ) and arctic weather at that elevation. At timberline, having just fallen though a perennial snowfield, through a relatively rare, deceptive on top of - combination of bowl-cirque & 'frozen cresting wave' snow overhang; not a true glacier that moves, carrying rocks. Those are typically on 30 -60 degree slopes,(except at melting toe of the snow, can be near horizontal).

But this was a beyond-vertical overhang that looked (only beneath aaargh) like a wave cresting just over, and frozen in position, beautiful actually and blue most commonly - but this was a disintegrating snow construct - just my luck..lol . Actually, it was deceptive powder on top- near flat, with no indication of the absent structure underneath the curling-over mixed degenerating layers of snow and candle ice. On my VERY unlikely little trip all the way through the snow when my crampon caught on one 'shoe and I 'stubbed' and fell through the unanticipated snow characteristics, with far too much powder to hold that temporal shape, were it not for the mix with that felt like powder,corn snow (skiers worst 'road rash is from this), powder again, and interspersed with almost candle ice, and more powder, with a thin frozen 'glasse' underbelly of that beast is what it fet like as I plunged as dead-weight upside down through the layers. The candle ice layer(s) I felt as I fell through - loosing my highly refractive prism'ed powerful prescription 'glacier glasses'.

Thankfully I had a backup pair of clear prescription glasses in my pack, and a pair of vented ski-goggles - no help upside-down, hanging (I had to laugh at myself, and more in a moment, as my crowd of Verizon network people stood by like the commercial on cell phone infrastructure. Funny thing was - it really worked out in the middle of, or on top of - nowhere ! Anyway, the candle ice was more indigenous to weakening ice on a river, and the whole nature of the plunge all the way through the snow field crest was a very rare occurence of layered snow characteristics, deep into disintegration.

So... there I was, looking and feeling like and idiot, oblivious to the rather acute situation on what was holding me upside-down, from shock. I was hanging upside down stuck ON/BY the tree as it were, bemoaning AND laughing at my circumstances, feeling no pain from shock (yet), and it occurred to me, as hung there, with (I hesitate to express it this way, forgive me, but its part and parcel of the story) with blood running ankle to head upside-down, and I felt an odd warmth before I realized it was blood. It oddly did not concern me, but I pragmatically calculated the time of the team to get to me, versus getting out on my own. More of that to come, with what would make a GREAT cell-phone commercial !

IN no panic whatsoever, as one of shock's characteristics can go, versus screaming in fear and pain -( I was 5 miles out through rough alpine terrain and c 6 ft. of snow on the mild slopes. In an abnormal calm, I thought to myself..."I wonder...since they put up a cell-tower in Estes Park (roughly 6 miles away from the tower by line of site through a saddle in Storm Pass,) I wondered if I could call out on my cell-phone, at least get a tone ? I also had a licensed VHF radio too, used primarily in my work ...out there...danged if it had only been workmans comp on a work day ! lol, but I did not even think of it in altered state) So I get my Motorola (I swear by them - they raised the bar in the industry some years back with 6-sigma plus reliability and DOA after purchase) get my Motorola out, and think to myself "not a chance"....rang my folks number on the edge of RM NAt'l Park - my trailhead I registered over across the valley from the Park Service Long's Peak Station - the registration mandatory for anything considered a climb, or in 4th class terrain or higher..er...I was) My folks' house - my 'trailhead' thankfully was at 10k ft. !

Damned if I didn't get a tone on the Motorola ! I laughed to myself (as jj said for life's little or big slaps in the face).....rang their number....no response - no doubt both were indisposed, or since they were on a party line at the time, their unique ring would often evade them audibly lol.... so I hung up. And instead of ringing another number to tell the Park Service of my circumstances and plan - they would have correctly argued with me - likely to no avail in my shock state... - normally - I'd of none better to stay put and wait - especially wth contact made - and my ability to calc coordinates from the topo - from my line of work. 15 years earlier I'd been on the park's search and rescue team. All that experience was for naught in shock - with, in my ...state...utter obliviousness.

I ignored that, 'cause I estimated their 'turn-out time plus time to where I was, and I hate the helicopter bit - ...because I was too embarrassed duhhhh stupid stupid, so casually I blew that idea off, knowing it would take a team 4 hours to assemble and get suited up. Chopper back to base was not a given at any time, as was commony the case, and up to me, and find me....and I thought how stupid I'd look, hanging upside down in a denuded wind-shaven gnarly-old methusala tree...branches like iron spikes... and I casually though (shock) knew, I'll bleed to death before they got to me.... I knew I'd twist all the my leg inside out by pushing on a hand-stand upside down with my treking poles and snow baskets, took me several minutes to gain purchase on something.....

And then did what at 229 pounds - 35 overweight, plus a 38 or so pound day and a half pack,I'd never be able to do other wise - I did an adrenaline and shock-fueled handstand on my trekking poles, and pushed my self off of the impalement (noting with mild shock curiosity that my leg looked inside out....thats odd, I thought,) then whipped a tourniquet (femoral artery tourniquets in the leg are...very uhm....noisy to put on..and crank...) had it on, and righted myself in the deep power, hard actually on crampon'd snowshoes, and walked out on a course I should not have been able to plot, on my USGS topo, calc'd the declined magnetic bearing by inversing polar-to-rectangular coordinates, then vice versa with correction for some extranneous factors, and walked on out.

Passed out three times on the way, got home, still in shock, and hollered up stairs to mom and dad "Hi guys, I'm home, gonna shower OK ?" (ok) - and in the dumbest shock -induced moment of the whole thing, tightened down the tourniquet, and took a shower, cause I wanted to be clean and presentable when I bled on the E/R room floor down to town.... thats it. WHAT AN IDIOT ! IDIOTE ! Thats my dumbest funny-to-me (at the time) case of what life can slap you in the face with, as jj put it ! duuuuuuuoyyyyy. The rest is to graphic... but thats the funny part... .

Well Ron, the better part (or worse) of my response had little to do with your response, but jj's laughing at what life can slap you in the face with is what made pop out.... I appreciate the humour in that......

Yea Ron so my next set will be a safe N 40 old-regular set, until I get my axles greased and light a shuck for anothet set of 'Special Addition' clues !

We are having a cold snap up in the foothills here that is not showing down in Denver for the 'National Weather Look ' - The Mountains and elevation change are never really covered - it can be +20 F in Denver, and -35 F on top of Long's Peak etc. Are you guys having any arctic blaster over your way ? My windows weather widgets show it peaked, or valley'd lol in and around the Arctic circle - about 4 days ago - 30 F here & there, in Tuktoyaktuk, Nuv. etc., and now its up to -18 f there - the Ice road Truckers N'Ly most 'frozen ocean drive'. And then it moved south. Curious, as it seems to have hit here coldest yesterday - tuesday actually, now that its early thurs., and now is rising back up, which by my amateur est. might have it out your way maybe 2 -3 days ago - a cold snap then maybe ?

- Beautiful work - those 2 vistories. I 'spect you're familiar with em ..lol - One insider question to the outside - when you guys put those pictures together, that fit the song so well, - where do you get them ? Nature one's would be rife on the internet, but a silhouette of a woman standing in a late afternoon oblique light 'movie golden hour' window, with pearls and a set of, say those fancy silver woman's hair brush etc on the , the armoire ? no thats clothes - what DO you women call those make-up desks ? Vanities ? - Anyway - where do you/how do you get images like that - do you stage 'em with models, etc. ? Cost would skyrocket in that mode.

My grandmother had a beautiful combination wall unit - Armoire, er.. make-up desk, and I think a bureau. I allways wanted to get Merry one of those wall units - good quality hardwood were well over $2,000, and my brother snagged and tagged Grandma's too early upon her passing -in poor taste, and broke the agreement of picking circles of interestingly - only the women - sat in a circle - and one by one picked estate items. Tradition ? My wife came out of the circle session, swearing she'd never sit in one again - she cried missing my grandma, while the others were literally tearing WWII Kimonos out of each other's hands ! Sad....

Merry took my only 2 requests - a trunk in the basement locked and I only had a sentimental feel for it - I remember'd looking at it, locked, as a kid - thinking it had a treasure trove in it ! Well that I wanted for the memory, and the mystery, and just one more thing - the contents of my grandfather's center desk drawer. If you women EVER want to know about what makes a man tic, and his real likes/dislikes, LOOK IN HIS CENTER DESK DRAWER,I'd loooked - as a kid, and then the 'Estate dissipation proceedings' - for me, that drawer - old wire rim glasses - a Professional Engineer's stamp, a few gentlemen's pocket knives, numerous 'bright and shiney metal things - as my mother and Merry both called 'em - they knew I loved those shiney metal things for gifts, the pocket knives, shirt pocket antique slide rules, circular beamn's arc flight calculator's, and OLD FOLDED MAPS !etc in that drawer that always fascinated me as a kid - I wanted ony the trunk - and the contents of that drawer - less important papers, etc.

I found the idea of the session to initiall be fair, with people of good character going into it, sad, but fair, but otherwise nice aunts and cousins, sister's in law etc - man o man - some turned vicious and would take double turns, lie, etc. nabbing materialistic value for some, seemed to override sentimentality - w/o an eye for dollar value - that went out the window except for Merry and my mother,the others turned into a conflagration ! Ask me sometime about what turned out to be an amazing trunk I found in the basement I gott - appeared of no value except sentimental, don't know why, what was inside would start a 'treasure map and obelisque' - tween's movie !

BTW - you're forum language studies are progressing real nice...lol.. but you must specialize - picture posting expert lingo, song abbrev's - that transcends all branches,uhm, geo places, lol - at some point you'll need to specialize - or go polyphonic, which I suspect would be a breeze for you.

I'll post both of your wins ! - sorry to ramble - memories flood sometimes when you hear a certain word or see a certain image...

Nice reading about those memories of yours, Steve. It made me remember some similar. I remember wire-rimmed glasses in an old desk drawer. I wore them a few times. They could have been my Great-Grandfathers. There were also some pocket-watches, and just a lot of cool things a kid likes looking at. I remember seeing 'treasure trunks', unlocked. One had old Christmas cards, one had ropes. We did use a rope before to tie a saucer onto the back of a snowmobile. Don't know what became of the things that were in the house. When my oldest son was one year old, my Dad told me he could have a fiddle that had either belonged to his Dad or Granddad,... anyway, when my Dad passed away, my sister took it and I think it disappeared.

Thank you Patti, for the thoughtful - in more than one way- response. While this thread is intended to be essentially game play on lyrics, I personally enjoy when I hear anecdotal and familial stores, etc from the players. It adds a very nice human touch, because I came very close to automating virtually every part of it, and stopped, not only when my 'excessively colorful' format grew very hard to read *guilty* lol.... , but when it was so close to simply invoking it, feeding it the game player's input, and letting it spit out the response, it started to no longer feel as 'human' as I' enjoy it being - So I changed it to meet many criteria, but maybe most importantly - it made it ffel more human again ! Everyone knows I write comically-long-winded yarns , anecdores, memories, too often to excess !

Sometimes, if I pour out a heartfelt memory, or something hard to write about (pleae notice the Mountaineering story of mine above) in order to tun it into a humorous touch here and there, it does great help to me, and I try to make it compelling and interesting to read, without any fabrication or stretching the truth at all, it in turn becomes special when a thoughtful reply like yours and others comes in.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of you father. I enjoyed reading the similarities you found in that drawer - made me remember the two pocket watches of my grandfather's in that drawer too!. I never met him, as when he passed, he was 1,500 miles away, and only 56. I was only about 6 months old. I'd never have remembered anyway if he did. Thus making that definative drawer of his so fascinating to me - my Dad's , Dad wow ! I could see from the content where many of my father's endearing proclivities cam from , too !

Certainly the drawer does not define the man, but the contents from my experience, DO tell a definative PART of a man's interests, or how he fed his family, or what he enjoyed as hobbies, but most often, I find the things we spoke of, pocket knives, pocket watches, occassional road maps, business cards by the dozens - which tend to be things a man would put on the bureau-top mini 'valet' box where he'd put his wallet, main watch, pocket change, a few business cards, glases etc., but when that little 6" x 12" "valet" over-flowed, the overflow went in his desk drawer top center.

This is only from my experience looking when allowed to, family drawer's, often after they pass away making it all the more ....connecting.

And I was just this evening, talking briefly with my mother, trying to calm her over a frightening test she has tomorrow at the doctor's, she mentioned to me that Dad's desk was found finally in a warehouse of a moving company, that was from when they moved from their perched mountain ridege-top home, down to the Town of Longmont, in the flatlands, close to mdecial care of theirs and the hospital.

Somehow the desk was missing from the mover, and they finally 'found it' - 6 years later ?? Well I was elated - because all the type of things we spoke of. you and I, were of course in his center drawer, too, plus work-related trinkets from the space program - NASA-. And....as unlikely as this sounds, Dad told me about 9 years ago, before he lost the ability to talk, he said "son. when I die, be ABSOLUTELY sure to look in the lower right bottom drawer; its locked, and the keys I keep here". The keys got lost in the move, but I am finally this coming weekend going to solve the mystery of what is in the drawer, likely paper work for his estate holddings etc, insurance, but then again, his work was highly classified, and he could not speak of many things in it, when 1/2-$Billion dollar rockets were launched with $300K - $400,000 payloads - like Voyageur, Viking, Mariner etc interplanetary spaceraft, and no doubt -secret- payloads such as the occassional defense platforms for orbit- and I am sure many that were said to NOT have been launched MAY have been, who knows ?

Decisions were in the Nations defense interest - you recall Star-WARS - the plat form to orbit ? Cancelled - international relations.... but did it go up ? These and more likely simple things will be found this weekend ! I love a treasure map trail, even as an adult, amounting to simply a desk finally found ! Its better than the movies ! And I idolized my Dad so much, it will be like hollding things in my hand that he did in his ! Well, as I so frequently talk in this thread onnly - as most often I only have time to process game submissions, Its my only outlet for daily anecdotes, and more substantive stories of mine that I hope are of interest to the players. I rarely hear back on them, and so often I pour my heart out in them, its a real treasure to have you read what you did and respond ! THANK YOU. And - if you want a hair-raising read - read the falling through the snowfield mountaineering story.

There are some laughs that I never could express that way until lately !

In short, it was quite simple - I scanned up and down from where this list started, and with recent nature of impaired vision, I equated erroneously two different posts of yours as one and the same. The Q358 post, and the combo Q360 and Q364 post I simply mistook for one and the same. My apologies. If I were having difficulties like this all the time - I'd re-consider my voluntary role as 'host' of sorts, no more and no less important than anyone else or delusions thereof, oops (except you - we all know you're the 'Boss' :biggrin: ) .

Perfectly innocent error, I am sure sorry, Thank you for pointing it out, Char. Relax and have some fun ! A little interaction keeps it "human" :) However, on that note, I will also, as I believe Ron is alluding too very politely in the post after your er....annoyed reminder, but helpful nonetheless Char :), Ron's on the money as usual. Decisions were in the Nations defense interest - you recall Star-WARS - the plat form to orbit ? Cancelled - international relations.... but did it go up ? These and more likely simple things will be found this weekend ! I love a treasure map trail, even as an adult, amounting to simply a desk finally found ! Its better than the movies ! And I idolized my Dad so much, it will be like hollding things in my hand that he did in his ! Well, as I so frequently talk in this thread onnly - as most often I only have time to process game submissions, Its my only outlet for daily anecdotes, and more substantive stories of mine that I hope are of interest to the players. I rarely hear back on them, and so often I pour my heart out in them, its a real treasure to have you read what you did and respond ! THANK YOU. And - if you want a hair-raising read - read the falling through the snowfield mountaineering story.

There are some laughs that I never could express that way until lately !

Good you remembered the pocket watches! I thought those were special. Holding watch and chain was a good feeling. The ones I saw could have either belonged to my Grandfather or Great-Grandfather. Sorry you didn't get to meet your Grandfather. I remember my Dad's Dad walking with a cane. He used to work in a fire-tower, but one day he had a stroke and fell. After that he had to use a cane and he couldn't talk. I remember he used to make bullets, and sometimes guys would get together for target practice, and of course us kids had to staying the house until they were done. His wife grew up in that house with the desk drawers. The things could have belonged to her father. Don't know, now. When I looked around, no one was living in the house anymore.

That is really alright that they 'found' the desk! Wow. Have a treasured weekend. :)

my maternal grandfather never wore a pocket watch but I do have his old pen/carving knife he used when in the Timmins bush and finding us grandkids branches to use for roasting marshmallows in the firepit on the beach. and for killing the odd snake that wandered too close to us..lol
i have his wedding ring from his 50th wedding anniversary ceremony and a plaque from the prime minister and certificate from the queen.
i also have a few pieces of 'fools gold' brought up from the gold mine where he worked.
and most important - i have his name - Charles..
i have my paternal grandmothers hand made leather wallet with her initials on the front. and i have many old, old pics from both sides of the family-many from italy and some tintypes. i have no idea who most of the folks in the older pics are. certainly some dour looking folks tho!

Charster - WOW ! That is IMPRESSIVE - not at all in a braggadosio way at all - but fascinating and special to you, fortunate 4 U ! . Your grandpa must have been an important man to have a 50th-Anniversary plaque and all you described from the Queen !!?? Holy Cow !

I wear a 70-something year old 'canteen-watch' in my snapped-tight Railroad Vest pocket. Dad came across in the Korean war in.. Korea! in a 'sell anything/anyone' stores - they had stopped and put ashore in a shallow keel Rube-Golberg'd very small ship inteneded/built to patrol the inland rivers for genuine modern pirates ! by a simple village, along a river they patrolled for the 'Pirates' - no joke ! and he said he entered the hut/store by gunpoint first- a sad state of affairs there, that 'women' were actually sold in there - 10/12 years old and up , so sad.

But, aside from the depravity which sickened Dad when they offered - what to me is a 'little girl' for sale to him.......he was so saddened for the girl - 11 maybe - he wanted to 'rescue her' but regulations prohibited non-military personnel as cargo by the Navy.

Nevertheless he saw 2 lucky finds after waving away the man proferring the girl to him - he wanted to knock that guys teeth down his throat he told me, but those under his command were with him, and well you know..... Anyway - he did find the usual war-scarce items - soap, TP, chocolate of unkown character lol..even ladies' nylons for port hony's (frown) or to bring home to wives - stockingS made of nylon were a petroleum-based martial-commandeer'ed commodity in the Korean 'Conflict'/War in the US.

His amazing find I'll pass on to MY one child (27..lol), Mamie -on two items -a 'canteen' leather-covered Swiss pocket watch dating from around early WWII in neutral of course Switzerland - civilan mandatory service for all 'army' -issued watch for men, don't know what they issued to women...- who had to serve as well. The two finds that Dad could bear being in their for, in a depraved situation, included also a "find of a lifetime" he found Mom an incredibly-beautiful deeply carved 'bas-relief' (artists in the room ?) teak chest, stoutly built and thick wood - I believe mahogany in the carved areas - much softer wood than the ship-worthy teak, in a mixture of lighter-colored wood in the carved area.. Magnificent. Even the handles on the end were wood-and part of a 'peasants-dwelling' scene - the handles were the "arches" in a bridge carved on both sides ! Absolutely amazing, And it still shines -it became Mom's hope chest after the Korean War - Dad's second hitch as an officer - and truly a gentleman.

I got the watch which (!?) pleased Dad so much to give when he could no longer talk, Parkinsonian, and he handed it to me to give to me with a big old smile- and gestured with it to keep... I wasn't sure - so he gestured to mom to give it to me in his way, the canteen watch - it has a leather outer case that completely encloses it except the face - where a long-time missing old 'celluloid' clear view was at one time, pieces here and there. It really does look like an old western wool-covered canteen !- to dip in the stream and evaporate while you rode would cool it (a real canteen that is...lol metal/wool), but the watch....Swiss made, and it STILL WORKS 4 me ! Incredible, It had an alarm- mechanical - that does not work.

I dare to risk carrying it in my Woolrich 'Railroad Vest' its been called for over 150 years - you can still by them by catalogue or on line - I have 3 darker colors to roughly match what I'm wearing - and I snap-pocket the watch in - and like you said - Dad's pen knife he pocket-ed to diddle with his Pipe, scrape the bowl, clean it up, etc. When I got it, I swear it even smelled of his pipe-smoke, when he passed. Such treasures I could never sell...they mean so much to me. When Mom passes (she had a scarey test today for the big C), Gord forbid, as I am executor to her will and codiciles, and I am really scared for her - my last link to my family's past; & she's willed the 'Teakwood chest' -as she always called it, to me she announced last week, scared. I never asked for it, thought that to be in poor taste on a Romantic item. When in her ALR residence - you do NOT stub your shoes even near it !

She keeps as her 2nd most precious memory from/of Dad' giftings - 1st of course her wedding/engagement set. I'd better stop - I'm doin it again ! Back to entries in gaming ! Thanks, Char, your...kind words made me feel much better, for my letting such deep/warm/hard/better now memories pour out as they do at times. I am still resolved to not do it in here, but I appreciate your warm words offering of your memories - so 'Char' ('Charlene'?) is your feminine given name version of Charles !
Ihave to admit Dad's pen-knife was never used in the timmins bush land, not to kill snakes with..lol.... but a warm memory of Dad all the same - him and his pipe - a single image together in my mind always... but your
items - no matter the nature of, but the memories, right ?

Thats very cool...all such memories - and this weekend I get to OPEN Dad's lower right bottom desk drawer - and center top both locked, he gave me the keys before he died, I was instructed to open them after he passed by him in barely readable scratch. I'm proud to look at that canteen watch, and use his pen knife. Thanks for lettin do this long heart-warming (to me lol) and ...er..longer posts. Back to Biz !

Thank you , Patti. Something about pocket watches - hard to define. I think its that they were always held in their hand when they would make use of it I 'spose. Yes, I sure wish I could have met my paternal grandfather - you may not believe this, but its true. Dad told me, and confirmed it when I was an adult and he still had a lucid mind.

His father was born in Park City Utah, before it was a ski haven of course. He (my grandfather) lived in his father's miner's shack. There was no school there for some reason, and he self-taught himself up to about 12th grade level - and had his own affinity self-taught for math..... He grew up to be first a mule-skinner for the mines (true, I never knew what that was before Dad explained) and then progressed to be the first unofficial school-teacher there. He then met my grandma , she lived in a shack on the hillside too, she had two dresses, one to wear, one for Sundays, or when she was doing the wash.

Then he formally taught algebra and trig in a real High School. And Married my Grandma. She went from a small shack to when my grandpa died, a fine, fine house he had built after WWII, everything just beautiful in it - the way she always dreamed of. I managed that believe it or not for Merry, until her health and all went south and she died. But I was proud to have provided for her and my daughter, in what I remembered my Dad saying that it was not the trappings and house that mattered, it was the heart inside that made the home- mom would finish that statement.... Well, we had a home.

Then Grandpa started with the Postal Service, and went cradle-to-grave with them almost... he made all the way to, first: a Postal line worker, then a Postal Inspector through a seriesof promotions over a few years,then into the war and through WWII intelligence, then said (by Dad)to have re-instituted the postal service in Japan after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki sort of took the breeze out of theirs....but his real assignment was to set it up so there would be tight handling of illegal trade in the mail, Dad said.

Another thing I did not understand 'til Dad explained - Postal Inspectors were pistol-packing 'cops' - like earlier Elliot-Nesses-type raids on waregouses, etc, They used to bust illegal shipments of any nature, and set-up snags, and stake-outs etc.- and got some pretty big-time crime-ring leaders. Then he made it to Deputy U.S. Postal Inspector, no. 2 man. Pretty impressive for a self-taught mule-skinner ! It was said when he died at 56 - at the office - said to cough once, then thunk, head down on the desk - heat-attack. Packing heat on a chest-draw holster at his last gasp. They made my Grandma feel bad by telling her it was all the 'famous in the family' raised cinnamon roles - I can taste 'em now. She never could forgive herself from that thoughtless crack someone made. Anyway...yes - i wish I could have met the one-step from a frontiersman !

Parkinson's had not set in on Dad yet, he was all about smokin his pipe on the deck, and invariably, tapping the ashes out against his boot sole lol.. The fiddle, fill, light, smoke, relight, tamper, relight, smoke....lol. He said one time after the characteristic pause when you asked him a deeper question, allmost any , really, like the pause in CRT (when newbies clap alone) if you did not know Dad - you'd ask him a question 'where the answer needed to be right', and he would characteristically pause, up to a full minute, puff on his pipe, looking straight at you, a quality in itself he said you could define a man by sometimes -unless they were nuts, he said- if he'd look you straight in the eye ( w/o the 'evil eye' lol). If you knew him, you'd wait that full minute, while Swiss-crafted-like mental components with Scots stubborness and perfectionism would give pause..... most who did not know him would throw their hands up and depart.. but family and friends knew.... sit... wait.. puff puff, eyeing you, then an ever-so-perceptably smile, and he'd answer you're question.

Never forget that stolid, scots, sometimes sanguine temperament - I don't believe he ever shouted at me in his LIFE. A quiet man. A genius - I say w/o bragging, him, not me.. And a good judge of character. He liked my wife immediately in the first 'bring her home for dinner'. She was scared stiff, she thought he was like a legend or something - the way I talked him up to her, and my mother - always impeccably dressed, hair ..?..cuoffed ? is that it ? Well they told her to dress casual for the 'steak cookout' - one of Dad's defining activites - cookouts. Best pictures of him looking sideways and smiling... He wore everyday jeans and his everyday chamois shirt, suspenders, and his vest.... guess where I got my dressing habits from ? lol. I guess you guys have never seen a pic of me. Fashion be da88ed ! But Mom - woops - she put on Mrs. Ward Cleaver outfit -full-dress (?), pearls, gold earrings etc.

Merry gets there and in slacks and a ...?..printed blowse ?.... flowers anyway, she had a cow when she met Mom, she actually curtsied ever so slightly.....and then asked where the 'washroom' was , and almost ran for it... I followed, Mom knew immediately what she had (my mother) done wrong upon seeing her, Merry was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.... and she wanted to make a good impression so bad she was sick... Mom changed in to pants and a sweater I think for Merry, and when Dad yelled in his usual "Lois, have you burned the F.F.'s - and said to Merry rounding the corner by the dining wing we built on together - Oh! er... Hi there MmMerry (he stuttered as a kid, and when he got embarrased he would still ever-so-slightly) He didn't get embarrassed at work too much. And she was fine with Dad right away - He hugged her....rare for him...I had told him she was the one.....anyway - FF's buned yet ? lol... That meant he was done on the steaks, and she (Mom) was forgetful as usual and yes burned the fries.....lol.. At that point Merry laughed and she was fine... just fine... Fine as Fine Can Be......

I better stop there, Patti - didn't cover everything, but I don't think I can take more good memories lol...
