If your Canadian it's almost mandatory that you like Lightfoot but was wondering if Gord's (like I know him lol) had much of an impact outside of Canada. I know that Elvis and other artists have covered his songs and Buffet for sure has sited him as an influence but how far into the mainstream has he penetrated. "
lots of responses including:-
was disipointed (sic) when Gordon wasn't invited to participate in either the openomg or closing Olympics, held in Canada.
One of Gordon's songs has become a favorite of mine to play for audiences.
Alberta bound is a simple song, with a chorus that works well for audience participation.
The song is short though, so I added a third verse.
I can't wait to see my lady, although I'll admet (sic) that maybe,
she don't like the fact that I am not around.
But I sing my songs for money and that takes me from my honey.
Some times I wish that I could settle down.
But this life that I am living, is not friendly or forgiving,
and at times my family feels I've let them down.
So I'll get back on that Interstate and prey that I won't be too late.
Tomorow night, I'll be Alberta Bound
and re TWOTEF one poster said
It's not my favorite, but it's one of a handful of songs that have frozen me in space and time at first hearing. He made me feel that I was there throughout the entire story.
The last time I was at McCabe's in Santa Monica, it was one of two songs specifically banned from their open mic nights
to which another poster replied
Was Stairway to Heaven the other one?
the response was
"Desolation Row"
I also noted a plug by "tommytunes" a.k.a. "wheels" for his fine new tribute CD on cdbaby

some simple, uptempo songs are short for a reason (ie. they don't wear out their welcome)...you could always repeat verses more times than usual for live performances (that way you might get more of a singalong going from your audience) plus take some lengthy instrumental breaks
all that aside, glad he's having fun with the lyric writing and performing GL stuff
