Guessing GL song titles
Err Umm
Are you lot trying to make me believe that I am going nuts??
Firstly tsomebody drags out a 10 year old review of a Humphries concert written by a
person who clearly did not know much about Gordon
But seriously I have to sympthise with him because getting GL song titles wrong is something I invented all of 40 years ago see my setlist for a 1968 Montreal concert
(I hand wrote a setlist including a then new-to-me song that I took to be called
"Tweedledidum Tweedledidee")
Then somebody elae called "cocochula" records Gord singing a song in Phoenix obviously
entitled
"If You Could Change My Mind"!! An interesting montage presumably caused by an unrelated
old audio or video file of "Changes" on his computer corrupting his video file of IYCRMM.
I will now have to download the video to check that it was not me imagining things or that the corruption was not caused on my computer. or possibly youtube itself. This reminds me that there is a humoroUs ditty written and sung by Christine Lavin that she called
"Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind"
clip at:-
http://www.cduniverse.co/productinfo...m=frooglemusic
Has anybody else ever had a problem with a GL song title
I will also mention that at the May 1981 Royal Albert Hall concert in London Gord actually for once gave the full title of one of his then new songs that he was about to
sing and introduced it as:-
"This one here is called.. it goes by the unlikely title of
'Heaven Help The Devil May He Have A few Unpleasant Memories'"
It was a memorable rendition featuring both Pee Wee and Mike

Re: Guessing GL song titles
I don't think Mr. Fowles did his due diligence before posting. The review is referring to the 10-19-08 concert. The reviewer did pull up a 10 year old interview, but that just further exposes his lack of knowledge. He knew a few of the song titles and he should have left it at that. The review is an embarrassment to journalists everywhere.
It was still funny though.

yeah, I was having a tough time trying to recall the title of a tune he played at Massey a few years back, back when Shellfish was new to me...anyhow, it didn't make it onto the Harmony album but I later received a bootleg and got to hear it again...Night Time
well, in honour of our journalist, it's time for NameThatTune:
LOVE GO AROUND
MAN OF MYSTERY
ONCE UPON A TIME
YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME
PAST THE TIME
RIDE RIDE RIDE
BY AND BY
JUST PASS IT ON
QUEEN IN A SAILOR'S DREAM
BORN TO FIGHT
WESTWARD BOUND
I JUST DON'T GET IT
OVER THE MOUNTAIN I GO
DREAM SHATTERED SHEEP
no 'dot dot dot' hints in this one

I have to disagree Ron because my due diligence and keen eyesight carefully spotted the reference to Gord being about to be 60 and according to the maths I were taut at skool since Gord turns 70 next month 70-60=10. QED No further research was necessary the journalist clearly was writing his misguided review 10 years ago and plainly could not be bothered to update it or check the song titles or revise the setlist either so it cannot in any material sense be construed as a review of the 2008 concert

Re: Guessing GL song titles
First, the "biographical" material that the journalist included is taken verbatim from the 1998 APPT press kit. The reporter didn't write it. That press kit, and a newer version which was released at the time of Harmony, are all over the internet. For a reporter who doesn't do much research (like look up the release date of the CD mentioned), it's easy enough to use the 1998 version rather than the 2004 version.
The fact that somebody who doesn't know the artists' songs would try to name a dozen of them is surprising and very poor journalism. Most responsible journalists would have stuck to the songs they were sure of (the hits, probably), and talked about the concert in general, or sought out a fan who could help him out with song titles. I'll bet there were a few hundred people who were willing and able ...
Finally, I keep waiting for somebody to name all the songs. Most are obvious to me, but a few are not. I am not quite energetic enough to look through his recent set lists and figure out which song from the rotation each of them must be, but perhaps one of you can post the complete list? Surely I am not the only one interested?

Re: Guessing GL song titles
No, Jesse. It's just a reporter who did no research. I just "posted" a comment at his blog. I was not harsh, but given there are no comments posted (surely some of you replied too, right?), I suspect that either he isn't moderating it at all, or he isn't "man" enough to accept criticism. I suggested that he post an "update". If he should take me up on it (which I tend to doubt), I'll be looking for help on those song titles!

Re: Guessing GL song titles
Thanks, JJ. There were two or three that didn't spring to mind for me and I didn't see a set list (at the time), nor did I want to look at any other recent one and figure it out! I must say, the ones I did not immediately pick out aren't favorite songs of mine. Figures. (I'll let you speculate about what songs that might be).

the reference to 60 years of age is in the part where the OLD review is.
at the beginning of his column he states Lightfoot is 70..
It IS a review of the concert last week - October 2008.
"Half-way through a 10-city tour, Gordon Lightfoot (on his 8th return visit to San Diego) brought along his quartet of musicians to satisfy the eager appetite of his fan-base in a 2-act concert of his songs dating back to the 70s. Among the songs, playing guitar and vocal, the 70-year young, Canadian-born, Gordon Lightfoot.."

Jesse Joe,
Those 2 were made up by jj. They were not part of the review.

but maybe 10 years ago he thought Gord was already 69?
someone not good with song titles might be equally bad with ages
good work, rm
your efforts may get you one 'Get out of the Principal's Office FREE' card!
val, I struggled mostly with Past The Time...and then a wee bit with By and Bys (while pondering, it actually had me humming Ayes the Bye)...anyhow, if I'm guessing correctly, I am also not a fan of the current Hangdog live performance but always have liked the the more ballsy-voiced studio version
yes, it's amazing that the journalist got the band members names correctly AND their spellings, something I actually still struggle with

Re: Guessing GL song titles
Our infamous"young scruffy dark curly headed" budding media mogul is by no means the only person to have had trouble putting the correct title to a GL song. As part of my continuing researches into trying to establish a definitive list of known songs recorded by GL I have reconsulted "Spike's" Music Collection which includes a comprehensive listing of GL songs and may be found at:-
http://spikesmusic-folk.spike-jamie....Lightfoot.html
and appears to be largely based upon information gleaned from Wayne's website
whilst a number of unfamiliar titles turned out to be unreleased songs or covers as listed by Wayne the following three incorrect titles upon duly diligent checking turned out to be duplicated entries of correctly entitled songs so as an extension of Jimmy's quiz here they are:-
People Like You And Like Me
Silvery Spoon (OK that is an early title for a well known "moon gazing" song)
We've Got To Stay Together
You can easily cheat by clicking on the song titles in Spike's
list and looking at the lyrics pdf file that you can download
TIP to read any Portable Document File you can either use Adobe's ridiculous free bloatware Acrobat Reader or download the also free but blazingly fast loading Foxit pdf file reader from:-
Http://foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
