This is to give notice that there will be what I hope will be a tremendous chat session tomorrow Friday May 14th in my new chat room.
This is following the successful "Countdown To Harmony" session last Friday when I noted that some nine Lightheads made it into Chat.I have not heard since that anybody failed to get in so can only assume that the new access arrangements I have organised is catering to everybody's set-up.If you fail please drop me a line saying what method(s) you tried and what transpired .
There can of course be only one topic for tomorrow because we are all now in harmony aren't we???
Susan and I would like to try to recreate the excitement many of us shared back in June 1999 when we all had nice new and shiny copies of Songbook and at her suggestion we would all start playing the same disc in sync so that we could compare notes. I hope that by Friday all US and Canadian fans will have their own copy and sincerely feel compassion for those like catmanron in Oz and Gaby in Leicester who will have to wait a while
I will try to simplify the links which fall into two main categories
1. Those with mIRC
Either set it up from basic principles as per my tutorial at:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
and the new link configuration at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/newlink.htm
Or even simpler just copy the following link and paste it into your address bar

irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/gordonlightfootchat

Sorry but this board refuses to allow me to make that special format URL a clickable link
2.If you have yet to decide to go along with those who recommemnd mIRC
or are using a MAC and have yet to find the MAC equivalent

try either of these two browser methods
A. using the Java applet stored on my own web site at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chat/
or
B. the less elegant but functional IRC server's JavaScript method
Dilexnet Link
Here's hoping for a bumper turnout at 9pm EST

Well John,it looks like I may never join a live chat. My PC is non-compatible with Java and MIRC. I got an idea though. Just pretend I was there and that all I said was brilliant! Later!

Border-buddy: I was there for part of the evening and I did, indeed, see you too. You and John were seated over in the corner consuming some sort of beverage and you appeared to be deep in conversation. I didn't want to interrupt...but it was definitely you I saw.

If John was in the corner consuming some kind of beverage, you can bet your bottom dollar it was Guinness Stout.

I was planning on coming in, but some unexpected guests dropped in with guitars, and I had to show off my new UltraSound amp.

Borderstone, if you have AIM chat software, IM me some night at cathyco1 and I'll help you set up for the chat room. There must be an Internet option that you don't have checked. If you don't have AIM, you can download it at aol.com. I also have yahoo messenger, but I rarely turn it on. If you'd rather use that, e-mail me at cathy@cathycowette.com and I'll turn it on.

Wrong I rarely drink Guinness and having once ventured to Cork prefer Murphys anyway
Cathy http://www.cathycowette.com

The past week has as expected seen a large number of Newsgroup threads and Corfid Topics
devoted to reactions to "Harmony" mostly extremely enthousiastic
In particular long-time no-poster young Anne Aprzy gave a very well received Newsgroup review at:- http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&threadm=Averc.51810%24aM3.49389%40newss vr29.news.prodigy.com&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26gro up%3Da lt.music.lightfoot
Young corfid poster Dunkin' Michael Douglas the thurd
asked "What's with the excitement" at:-
in topic http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002285.html
reminding some of us of earlier thrills upon finding a hitherto unknown new album release and the scrabble to remove the wrapping to get at the new sacred vinyl inside
Wes steele brought up the subject of Manaus on corfid and I was able to provide some historical and geographical detail at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002279.html
I guess that last Friday most fans were too busy playing their new cd to bother with the chat room as a disappointingly small number (eight) met to discuss "Harmony" and play it in sync.
At least one person (Walter Stoneborder) admitted to having a problem getting in
blaming his new computer which "is non-compatible with Java and MIRC." but omitted as I had asked to e-mail me with details of his software, A point of clarification is in order
I have provided three distinct ways to access the chat room:-
1. the recommended mIRC
using the link that you'll have to copy and paste
irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/gordonlightfootchat
that is a special type of URL that magically opens mIRC if you have it installed already
2. the java applet that downloads from my site:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/chat
3 the javascript link provided by the IRC server http://www.dilexnet.net/irc/webchat/...nlightfootchat
I previously failed to emphasize that Javascript and Java applets are not the same thing although for internet security reasons it is possible to configure your browser to ignore both which might be the case with Walter's setup
so let's try again this evening at 9 PM eST or for those in the UK still looking out for the postman (mailman) 2 AM BST

Highlights
Both the Newsgroup and corfid continued to buzz with discussions on Harmony
Including a pair of detailed personal reviews on the NG:-
Anne (Przykucki)
started a thread at:- http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...mb-m01.aol.com
and David Bradford "cooking" in Sweden at: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...ewsb.telia.net
a fascinating thread "Subject: Emulating vs Creating" was started by RonM at:- http://groups.google.com/groups?q=g:...ing.google.com
which produced one of Derek Kidd's entertaining ramblings
An important new topic on corfid is the intention of the UK contingent to hold a gathering sooner (rather than later) and possibly in the North of England see:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002301.html
Chat
Last Friday a total of 11 made it into the new chat room including the welcome first visits there by Erica/Erkie/sundreme and Ed Mullen. Unfortunately Gaby in England was sleeping again.
If she fails this evening I shall demand her telephone number so I can give her a wake-up call!!
Both Ron in Oz and I last week had initial problems using mIRC to get us into the correct room but eventually we both made it.
Tonight I am hoping that prolific corfid nightowl Walter Stoneborder will get the copy of mIRC I emailed to him installed and functioning
Usual time and access links
Time 9pm EST which I calculate for Walter in Phoenix AZ from info at:- http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ is:-
6PM (same as California)
OK if you are still at work then we usually go on for about two hours although Ron down under usually leaves early as it is his lunchtime on Saturday
Anybody coming in : Please don't forget how to change your nickname if you find you are in as a "guest"
simply type /nick then leave a space then the name you wish to use
example /nick gordonlightfoot (note no spaces in the name)
I also keep meaning to point out that
whichever method you use to get in (browser link or mIRC)
there is a (sometimes) useful "private chat" facility
In the browser method right click on the person you want to chat with then select the top option "private"
This should work perhaps we can experiment this evening
also have your Harmony CD ready so that we can play "in sync"
I have just noticed that I typed an incorrect link for my chat page last week it is actually:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat
If anybody has a problem please email me the details
or talk to me in real time on AOL Instant Messenger (I am okyoutellme)
details at http://www.littlejim.shorturl.com

Last week's chat saw a total of 6 regulars plus a welcome newcomer Stew from Dallas
As I reported last week both catmanron and I had problems getting into the correct chat room a fortnight ago well we both got in but found that the room was empty.
Last week apparently the original chat room founder Rik Stevans suffered likewise.
One possible reason was that I had inadvertently made a typo when trying to describe how to
configure mIRC as shown on my page
http;//www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chatroom/newlink.htm.... I had put the IRC server down as dialexnet.net instead of dilexnet.net. I have now uploaded a revised screenshot of the "add server" box.
To try to prevent future confusion I have now set the topic as "Welcome All Lightheads"
I then entered the room using all 4 methods that I have previously listed and verified that that topic appeared in each one.
A sample screenshot from mIRC shows three of me!!

So the moral is if you find yourself in the room on your own get out and try another method
To recap the four methods which are aimed at PC users* are:-
A. if you already have mIRC
which is described in depth at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...tingupmIRC.htm
plus a link to reconfigure mIRC at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/newlink.htm
*AND if you have a MAC for which no version of mIRC exists or is likely I have listed some alternative MAC IRC client Programmes at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c.../MAClients.htm
A1 simply open mIRC from your start>>programs menu
A2 go to my web site chat page at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chat/
scroll down until you see this link
"Direct to mIRC Gordon Lightfoot Chat"
Which will automatically open mIRC AND configure it for this chat room
Apologies for this being in a bit of a mess I will during next week tidy up my various chat/mIRC pages and consolidate them on one page (plus links as necessary)
B.IF YOU DO NOT YET HAVE mIRC THERE ARE A PAIR OF ALTERNATIVE BROWSER ENTRY METHODS BOTH USING JAVA APLETS:-
B1
open my page:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chat/
read the preeamble
accept the download of the JWIRC Java Aplet
enter your desired nick and join the party
B2
try the alternative Java Applet provided by the IRC server
dilexnet.net by clicking the final link
"Dilexnet link"
One way or another you should get in
Unless for security reasons your browser has had in tools>options
has had Java disabled
If any problems it is essential, that you e-mail me full details PLEASE
So tonight then at 9 PM EST

Well All Right after an excruciating time getting my HTML code and file links operating
correctly I have just completed my necesssary tidying up of the chat opening page and the instructions/description for configuring mIRC. No doubt I shall find a few typos yet but basically it's done
So apologies for this rather late posting for this evening's chat at 9 pm EST in the latest room at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat
Last Friday we were a good crowd of 8 including one newcomer "Alice" a Gord fan for thirty years from Central California

Firstly apologies for not posting a reminder for last week's chat I was far too busy getting ready to attend Diane Johnson's daughter's wedding in New Hampshire. Susan and I and Jenney were therefore unable to chat. Even so I do hope a number of you remembered and kept the room going. I am today trying to get ready for another gathering in New Jersey tomorrow evening, hence this reminder is rather late in the day.
But as on every Friday at 9 p.m. EST, there will be a session at the gordonlighfootchat channel this very evening. So click on this link for full access details http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/chat
I am also well behind in bringing to you recent highlights of the two main message boards
the usenet Newsgroup at:-
http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
has been buzzing as usual
An innocious question "How's Gord" at:-
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...n-sA%40vci.net
turned into a fine discussion on how Gord and EMP view the internet
this duly elicited an apology from Val re her website's withrawal

about the usefulness of Val's site for checking lyrics
and this finally produced a most interesting tip from John Dawson
to use a resource I at least was hitherto unaware of that has some 11 million archived web site pages going back to 1996 (I think it is):-
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
where the "Wayback Machine" can find certain old now deleted websites (unless like Val's there has been a block put on it
I have now recovered for my own use a few Lightfoot sites from days gone by.
More recently there is a report on the shenanigans last weekend in Geotgia

I know this is old and redundant BUT I truly miss the availability of Val's site most for the listing of songs and what albums they appear on. Lazy me, I would want to hear a song and go to Val's list and find out what album to get. It takes longer now.

It may be set up a bit differently, but that same information can be found right here on Corfid. Florian lists each song and all albums it is included on.

It tells me the "page not found", are you going to exactly what you typed in your message? I will try some other ways to get there. Thanks. I keep getting sent to EarthLink. I put an a in vlmagee and it still doesn't get there. Stationmaster, could you send the web page via email? brink@rkymtnhi.com thanks. Deb
