What is your favourite recording of The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. I like the re-recording best.

The original is always the best! I feel that re-recordings are a somewhat frivilous waste of studio time and they are rarely as good. His own remakes are 10 times better than any other artist I've heard attempt, but I still think a person should leave "well enough" alone. Just my opinion. Later!

For the longest time I liked the re-make better. Lately, the original is what I prefer. But that will change depending on the season. Once the snow flies, I like the re-make for some reason. As a matter of fact, I have Summertime Dream in the car right now.

I also switch on the re-makes and the originals of not just this song, but a lot of them. I like the original originally but right now I'm still prefering the 2nd version.

Which one is the re-make? I only know of the version that is on Summertime Dream...which I really like.

Oma,

The one on Gord's Gold II is the re-make. They all are on that CD. Great stuff. I have an extra...

Nothing against Gord, of course, but I don't like any of the rerecordings on Gord's Gold II, especially Shadows, which completely loses its optimism. Plus, don't all his vocals sound like he's singing at you through an underground tunnel? I wonder why he rerecorded those? Anybody know?

If you don't like GGII, is it safe to assume you dislike "Waiting For You" and "A Painter Passing Through"?

I think he rerecorded them because over the years, in concert his songs had evolved, due to the change in band members, and Gord's evolution as a musician. Think about it. It must be pretty boring to play the same songs exactly the same way over and over and over. Parts are added to spice songs up in concert. GGII was made to sound more like a live concert recording, more along the lines of how he was playing the songs at the time. I actually think it's pretty interesting to compare the remakes with the originals, and don't mind listening to them at all. Sometimes I pefer the originals, and sometimes I prefer the remakes. It depends on the type of mood I'm in.

I'm surprised you don't like the remake of 'Shadows'. I think the 2nd version is superior to the original. It sounds much more gloomier to me. But we all have opinions.
(Yes, it does sort of sound like he's singing thru a tunnel or out in the middle of nowhere anyway).
