Since posting that Gordon has sent me a private message that clarifies his question somewhat.
Firstly he in effect denies that he is the infamous Duncan (a.k.a. DMD3 etc).He does not believe the claim in fact but it seems that somebody in a chat room that he patronises is making the ridiculous claim that Lightfoot did not actually compose "Softly" despite I submit overwhelming evidence to the contrary and Gordon just wants to know the truth.Well all Right!!!
For starters the sheet music as contained in the "Playalong With The Record" book that matches the "The Way I Feel" album clearly attributes Softly to GL and after all these years I would have expected a genuine claimant to have taken some legal action.
In any case a google search for
"lightfoot softly sheet music"
produces well over 4000 web results the majority clearly implicating Gord as the songwriter
for example I checked out:-

installed their viewer and then found they required some money to actually see the sheet music on my monitor
