Ribbon Of Darkness or Early Morning Rain....Which gave Lightfoot the bigger boost?

"Early Morning Rain" is always mentioned first when you talk about GL's first break but you cannot forget "Ribbon Of Darkness".

"Ribbon Of Darkness", sung by Marty Robbins was a number one hit on the country charts for six weeks I believe. Think about that. Number 1 for six weeks.

I have been surprised over the years that more people (especially country artists) haven't sung GL's songs, especially after his early success.

Rob, I hate to say it but alot of people just think of Gord as a folk writer. We all know what kind of artist he is, but most people just don't want to give him a chance. Most artist will only cover a song if it's been in the charts before. There looking for the guaranteed hit. Well thats what think anyway. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Paul,
I think you meant to address that last post to Wes, the Snow Cone King, but I agree with you. Gordon is in a class that is not just folk, but he does Country and other styles as well. He calls it Adult Comtemporary..whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. I just like how he can keep the tunes either topical and pertenant and then switch it to something very deep and personal. What a Guy!!

But for me personally it was the much overlooked single "Spin Spin"
that signalled to me that here was a hit-maker as evidenced by:-
Chart #503 - Monday, October 10, 1966
"Spin Spin" was at number 6
up from 9th on October 3rd
admittedly it was a short-lived hit as
it fell to 12th on the October 17th

Before I reply,we seem to have a stangething going on here. If anyone out there is trying to tell they think I post to many messages,then I wish they would just say so. Then again,I thought this site was about free expression. I don't understand why people should complain about something like that,it's an American right yet people complain? So,about Gord's start in Canada,yes I agree that would be the overall measure of his true start. I was mainly talking about having a hit break through on the charts here. When Peter,Paul & Mary did,"For Lovin' Me and hit the top 40 giving Gord his first legit songwriting credit here in the U.S. although you could also credit the label switch to WB. That's all I have to say and POST. Later!

I don't know much about this but I'd say 'Early Morning Rain' because several other people, including Elvis, recorded it.
He mentioned it in the Songbook.
