Default Howdy old friends, from geo steve

Howdy everyone. I bumped into Char in facebook one of the two Lightfoot pages, and told her I've been meaning to drop back in and join the fray again. I've missed old friends in here, and I see a lot of new names too.

My biggest news with family is I am now officially a grandfather! My daughter Mamie gave birth last month to her first baby, a fine healthy son.

How have you all been? Any big news in here? Gord going to start selling T-shirts with that great Carefree Highway Tour graphic?

OK, well, I wanted to say hello, and next I'll look in the Red Rocks thread, as that's in my home area here.

Good to be back!

Nice to hear from you Geo Steve! Your quizzes were some of the best times on corfid imo. Glad you're doing well and congrats on your new grandson.

Thank you Char for bustin' my chops to make good on my word to get back in here,LOL, and to thank you FormerlyLavendar (long time)! I've been talking about it for a long time, and I've got to say the time I'd been investing in facebook instead was growing kind of cloying. I mean that with no enmity toward anyone in their, especially for the main reason I got into it at all. I joined at the request of my daughter Mamie (age 30), and it seems her generation in large part - "Generation Y" a.k.a "The Millenials" are fond of facebook, which seems to be as much a part of their daily communications as smartphones (which I finally gave into recently, a stoic holdout prior to that).

Mamie though it would help me re-connect with, well, almost everyone I knew, during the slump, almost zombie-like time period for me that senior members in here might recall I went through after the loss I incurred in 2008 that turned everything upside-down for me. My daughter, that very special young lady who knows me so well, thought it would help get me out of that slump. It did in part, but with my contemporaries for the most part near killing themselves at work to keep their jobs (or companies) from going to China, they hardly had time to eat and spend an hour with their family everynight after work (if they were lucky), much less talk in facebook. So, to varying degrees, with very large exceptions to this in my age group as a "boomer", guys my age, notably my friends in specific, really are not a presence in facebook but one of *my* "real-life" friends.

So it seemed, there, I could not talk shop (though there is LinkedIn, which I do use to "geodetic"-away, LOL). Or cars, or wilderness exploits - memories by and large, since the event senior members might also recall *possibly* that essentially curtailed my mountain adventures, that I'm resolved to not wallow in. So, that left (in facebook, though its changing to broader, topical scope) a lot of baby pictures, happy young couples, wonderful stuff, wedding photos (hard memories on that one) and great stuff, but for me, an "aging bull", it just felt a bit cloying, despite the great daily conversations with my daughter, and her friends, gushing over new washing machines, disposable diapers, happy fresh-scrubbed babies (I love my grandson!),and you get the idea.

Not quite the enviroment for me (in large quantities) anymore, until I found the relatively new Lightfoot page (and I understand there is a second one, too). I saw maybe two old friends from corfid - Char, and Peewee (Ed),and thought "heck, time to just jump back in to talk Lightfoot and stuff with my like-minded friends". So here I am. Good to be back. And I still talk too much. Post-by-post though, that's better too. This is my big "its good to be back', LOL. Thanks!

Well, on Lyrics-Quizzers, just say the word, if there seems to be any kind of concensus among enough folks to make it fun! I'm game!

I find FB pages 'lose' stuff posted because people don't scroll thru more than a few posts and certainly not to the prior day to see if they missed anything. - there's no search function and then stuff just gets re-posted over and over. Very few 'discussions', lots of 'choose song 1,2, or 3' sorts of things but very seldom does anyone extrapolate on the why of their choice.

Char, if I read you right, you're commenting on what might be part of my growing partial disenchantment with facebook, at least in large doses? That you too see missed oppurtunities for meaningful topical discussions? There are in fact enough political rantsbeing shared and forwarded, but are mostly fringe extremist left or right, not where most reasoned thinking takes place IMO - near centrist/moderate, with departures politely here and there as subjects of polite exchange. HAH! No, I get more extreme points of view on politics and almost religion is all or nothing it seems, there is very little middle-ground for purpose of intelligent discussion, compared to many good forums and bloggers' sites IMO. Thats actually what I like increasingly about Valeries Lightfoot site in there - it leaves room for differing opinions, versus insistance on joining a "position" on something, lock-stock and barrel, and its gaining some momentum I notice. People are axtually asking "whay do you think on this?" - in Valerie's site, which is by and large what I am trying to say about facebook in general - while it's changing some, I'm weary of joining the extreme this or that requests, and long for more intelligent conversation in general. And God help you if you post THIS long of a post, LOL. So. Valerie's site compliments corfid when I'm in there, and does not compete with it. But if I'm back into talking Lightfoot, I'm in for a pound, in for , for a ... Euro... LOL No I mean in for the whole shebang the "grandaddaddy of them all", of Lightfoot rodeos - corfid, AND I'll stop in Valerie's site when in facebook, the best of both worlds. I'll still say hello to my daughter near every day in fb, check on the latest news and pictures of my grandson, but for GL, I'll primarily look forward to talking in here.

I see some names missing at first glances - what of MistyMoppins, JessieJoe, RW, OhLinda, Yuri, Fezzo? And others - the old regular from around 2009 or so? id corfid growing, or shrinking in regulars from backa few? Watchman? John Knowles Bt. I see is around. I just need to poke around some more. I guess my main Q is this: is there someone or two that kicked the bucket and I need to avoid sticking my old foot in my mouth regarding asking about them? Nice to be back.

Does anyone really want to play Lyrics Quizzers? If so, let me soak up the atmosohere in corfid for awhile, then I'll enjoy that too, of others would. Doesn't matter to me if I pose the clues or not. It's just fun either way.

reads your post a few time, steve.... please point us to those intelligent discussions...i cant find a thing....searched Facebook Valerie Gordon Lightfoot and only found a young black woman....doesnt seem to be a gord fan

yeah, the facebook layout seems to suck for discussion...glad it works for keeping up with your daughter ...the old newsgroup subthread layout seemed to work fine...this site is nice in that it highlights new posts...you can filter out all posts by a certain member so you might want to try that in searching for pals that drop in and out....maybe their names have changed over time (to protect the innocent, lol)

other than EMP, char (wayne, jenney, etc) seems closest to Gord happenings and shares them with all even when she's traveling...even the official wayne website is often second hand news...other sources are third or fourth hand, from my observation...Latest news is often 3 or 4 months old and rehash

i checked out the fan page on facebook that seems to be hosted by a fella in carolina...the "choose your fave of two songs" is not something i am drawn to...probably great fun for him and newbies though...i agree with char...whats the point in picking one over the other without giving some reason...i think facebook Likes are similarily mysterious...i want to know "why?" ...# or friends and # of Likes and trending is all hype to me....i know what i like and what i don't...i like corfid....just because

Sure jj - its actually just the facebook site called "Gordon Lightfoot Fan Club" site- that Valerie Magee hosts. I think she does, based on the amount of her presence in there, combined with the fact that so many people have thanked her in that site for all that she does. I only assume that she started it, and hosts it. Char would know, as she frequents it,and knows Valerie too, as do so many of us that follow Lightfoot's work. She (Valerie, that is), is a tireless volunteer of her time, dedicated to doing so much for our benefit, in addition to her business of generating and producing websites. Her own folk music/Lightfoot site is by no means limited to Gordon, as I'd imagine you well know, but thought I'd mention that in the unlikely event that you didn't.

In any event, the facebook site is as you say, filled with (primarily) newby-(sounding) posts there. Still, the changing nature of some posts are increasingly encouraging people to expand on the most basic of Q's & A's such as "what's your favorite album/song/lyric",etc. I guess I'm the windbag that's been offering a lot of rationale for my choices (imagine that, LOL ). I tabbed-over to facebook just now, and see that is in fact the case; that it is gradually changing, but not yet close to the depth and breadth of corfid posts that are of sufficient detail to hold your interest there, jj. Since you mentioned not seeing that page in facebook, here is the URL. I didn't call it by the right name in my previous, unedited post that I have corrected here. The site:
