Re: Argo - haven't seen the film
Argo was a very good movie, but it would have been just as good, if not better, if it had stayed true to the facts.
I don't know if Ben Affleck wanted a bigger role for the character he was portraying, or if he felt that the film needed to have the bigger heroes be American. But the real story is so compelling, I can't believe it wouldn't have made a great film in its own right.

Re: Argo - haven't seen the film
Affleck used the Mendez book and of course he wrote himself as the hero - that is the rationale Affleck uses...He said 'thanks to Mendez for letting us tell HIS story"..he emphasized HIS..
When incidents like that in history (and the other Oscar nominated movies have the same 'truth' problems) so many people use them as their understanding of the facts and it becomes their truth. I've even read that the focus back then on the Canadian involvement was all part of the deception-inferring that there really wasn't much they did other than act a part given to them and Ken Taylor continued acting it while receiving accolades after the caper was over.
The sad part is that while those hostages were living in hiding (in a luxurious diplomat's home)they were not suffering the hardships like the other 52 hostages were undergoing at the same time. The couple who housed the six were not even in the movie... While Ambassador Taylor is depicted as taking in all six of the American escapees, it was John Sheardown, another Canadian Consular Official, and his wife, Zena, who took in four of them. Ambassador Taylor housed the other two. Mr. Sheardown died a few weeks ago.

Maybe Ben will make another movie about them...or maybe Disney will..
lol
Gordon Pinsent was in a 1981 movie about it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082339/

Re: Argo - haven't seen the film
Unfortunately, the movie does give the impression, at the end, that much of the Canadian involvement, and the credit that was given, was a ruse to protect the "real" heroes. I have read that when the movie was first shown, the on-screen credits at the conclusion basically said that the Canadian involvement was minimal and they erroneously received much of the credit. There was justifiable outrage at that, and the version I saw said something about how the operation showed how the American and Canadian governments worked together to achieve a successful resolution to the crisis.
You're right, Char, it's a scary proposition to think that people are getting all of their knowledge of history from movies. The other Oscar-nominated movie I saw, Lincoln, also took some liberties, though nothing as egregious as Argo. And sadly, President and Mrs Lincoln still chose to take in a play.

Re: Argo - haven't seen the film
THe ARGO movie premiered here in Toronto last year with Affleck et al in attendance and the kerfuffle after it was over was crazy..
Affleck ended up flying Ken Taylor to California to screen it for him as he never even thought to invite the man to the opening IN Toronto!!!!!!!!!!!
Taylor also requested that very erroneous bulls..t at the end be changed. The new message at the end must be what you saw.
And Affleck dropped out of Occidental College after 1 year, where he had studied Middle Eastern studies. LOLOL!!!
Well the editors deserved their Oscar for sure - editing out all the truth! lolol

Re: Argo - haven't seen the film
Iwell, I just saw the film on a plane (with ear buds, not ideal) but as I landed, "they" were just taking off so I missed last bit of the ending
I think casting some unknowns for the Arkin and Goodman roles (not to mention Affleck) would have worked better for me. But I liked the casting of the hostages and their haircuts. I too wondered more about those other slew of poor US hostages.
That climatic telephone ringing scene didn't have me nearly as immersed as the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire telephone ringing scene. Now there was some fine directing. I think I will enjoy the Pi movie just as much. I understand that late lovely tiger was from the zoo near char's
