Milton Smith had a terrible hunch. So the assistant engineer of the Charles S. Price quit the freighter less than 3 weeks before season's end, forgoing bonus pay and drawing mockery from his mates. Soon, an unexpected collision of three weather systems unleashed a monstrous gale on the Great Lakes. Cyclonic wind, blinding snow and 10 metre waves terrorized sailors for days, sinking a dozen ships, wrecking 25 others and killing more than 250 people. The deadliest and costliest storm to pound the Great Lakes wrote horror stories into the memories of survivors. The rifle-fire of rivets popping, the snap of rudders, the deluge of icy water. Fifty six bodies washed up on Canadian beaches, along with the flotsam and farewell messages. For a week an overturned ship could be spotted on Lake Huron. It was the Charles S. Price - and Smith had to identify his mates' bodies.
