I wonder about weird things..................I seem to recall Lightfoot mentioning (I think it was the 'Crawdaddy' magazine interview) that he was entering into another season for songwriting. So, I was wondering if there is a particular time of year when you usually find the muse of your choice exceptionally strong, with creativity calling.
That's a good point. I seem to recall the writer of the article labeling Lightfoot as not only poetic, but prosaic as well. Maybe it was just the time to get the work done. The use of the word 'season' (perhaps when the weather drives one indoors) had me thinking his muse paid a visit about the same time each year.
This reminds me of the Lightfoot interview w/ the late great Peter Gzowski. When he told him about the early years. The company United Artists wanted an Album a year. And Gord was getting them out pretty good and fast. Those five albums are what made a Lighthead out of me.
I seem to recall him saying about those canoeing trips he'd take that he'd be out for a few weeks and start to feel that he should be back in Toronto writing songs again. I think he used those trips to clear his head, (gotta get away <g>) to be ready to write again - he got great inspiration from his surroundings that he could draw on for years.
performance/touring season, writing/recording season
No doubt he could write when the moment struck him (Carefree Highway, et al) but pros can crank out the tunes during a dedicated season (whether for a contract obligation or for later use).
Myself - I've written 20-25 songs throughout the years and I'd have been capable of more if I was earning $$$$ and had periods of time dedicated for writing. But even when I'm not sitting down to write...lyrics and/or music pops into my head at times and I usually have to get something down ASAP. If I can make the time to fine tune and finish it...I'm done and it's in my head. Other times, I get down enough and can go back to it later (sometimes years later). I have several unfinished songs. Some are worth working on - others...forget it.
Makes me wonder what songs Gordon's had kicking around for years that not a soul will ever hear...or perhaps we may have the priviledge. He's blessed us with plenty for sure!
