Boy what selfish cheap jerks!
They have so much money and yet they're going to deny a 70 something year old woman money,simply because of not wanting to pay for use of her late husband's name?

What a bunch of losers! Don;t they know his name is practically $$ to be made?

the item you read on the Holly forum in fact quite clearly said
"Holly widow's request may force change at plaza The names of the Buddy Holly Terrace and Buddy Holly Walk of Fame may be
changed to West Texas to avoid paying fees to the Lubbock singer's widow."
one reply spelt it out even more clearly
"This week, our city council received word from Buddy Holly's widow that unless we agreed to pay her $10K annually, we would not be able to use his name anywhere in our city."
As the Yahoo group topic sees it it is Buddy's widow (who has a reputation for holding up recording issues etc) in order to maximise her income from the BH name) who is demanding that streets plazas and statues in Lubbock be renamed or royalties paid to herfor the city to use Buddy's name which is ovbviouly a completely different matter to:-

In point of fact the interesting thing is that because the UK in particular only has a 50 year copyright rule and as Buddy
was so sadly killed in February 1959 in less than two years his recordings can be freely issued by anybody. My best guess
is that Maria Elena Santiago/Holly knowing that her record sales royalties will soon dry up is trying to see how she could maintain an income by any other means

"Following a telephone conversation I have had with Maria Elena I can report that she has has not said that the name of Buddy Holly has to be removed from the Walk of Fame and the nearby Plaza. She has, through her CMG representatives, said that unless they pay her they cannot use Buddy's name for a festival. Civic Lubbock Inc have replied that in that case they will remove all reference to Buddy from the Lubbock landmarks AND they will move the statue to the Depot District by the Buddy Holly Centre (or what ever they decide to call it!).It is very easy to read one side of a story in the newspapers and in the media and pass judgement without hearing the whole story.Lubbock, from my own experience, is not 'Buddy Holly friendly'. The statue was not paid for by the City but by sale of miniatures of the statue being bought by fans. The article that was referred to in the newspaper was an attempt by Civic Lubbock to say that Buddy Holly was just one of many great stars, Giants, who came from the city. What do you think?If you want to complain about the de-naming of Buddy Holly sites and removal of the statue then maybe it ought to be Dan Burns at Civic Lubbock Inc who receives the letters and objections not Maria"
I was fortunate to be able to see the statue during my grand 1999 US tour and very impressive it is too

Well, all well and good if 50 years is the UK law, but the law in the US (which, ironically, was changed in the 70s to make international laws standard) is lifetime of the composer plus 70 years which would move that date another 20 years into the future.

Of course there's the other part about who owns the recordings and how long that copyright lasts and at the moment I don't know the answer to that one.
