Paul Simon to get inaugural Gershwin award
WASHINGTON, April 23 (UPI) -- Award-winning singer-songwriter Paul Simon has been chosen to receive the inaugural U.S. Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
The honor will be presented May 23 at the Warner Theatre in Washington and taped for broadcast June 27 on PBS, Billboard said Monday.
Simon's former singing partner, Art Garfunkel, is among the artists confirmed to participate in the festivities. Others include Ladysmith Black Mambazo, James Taylor, Stephen Marley, Marc Anthony, Lyle Lovett, Yolanda Adams, the Dixie Hummingbirds, Lyle Lovett, Philip Glass, Alison Krauss and Buckwheat Zydeco. Television personalities Bob Costas and Lorne Michaels are the scheduled presenters.
The Gershwin prize was initiated to honor "the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world's culture," according to its creators.

I think the news item was clear. It's because of:
"the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world's culture"
Just joshing. Heck, I dunno. Maybe he'll explain why at the gala event. I do believe Simon is a baseball and basketball fan.
I look forward to seeing Ladysmith Black Mambazo (who ????).

and Bob Costas plays basketball and baseball?
lol
j/k !
He can be such an annoying little gnat at times.
I'd rather he have Chevy Chase instead of Costas..they could reprise "You Can Call Me Al" like they did for the video..cracks me up just thinking about it.

That's a brilliant idea ! I'd forgotten about that video. Thanks for remembering.
Further pondering the 'Bob Costas Mystery'.....Is Costas real short ?

anytime I've seen Costas standing with other people he seems short - maybe about 5'9 on a good day..lol
that's why he does his interviews sitting down...
lol
that video is priceless - Chevy and Paul are good friends and you can see that goofiness friends have in the video.

The 'Bob Costas Mystery' was bothering me, so I did some sleuthing (some may call it googling) and came up with this:
1) Costas had a talk show that ran from 1988 to 1994. In 1991 Simon did a 2 part interview on Costas' show. It appears that Costas is quite the music fan. Among other names I noticed on the guests list were Kris Kristofferson, Wllie Nelson, Sting, and Tony Bennet, among many more.
2) Costas and Simon are both New York Yankee fans, and both grew up idolizing Mickey Mantle.
3) When NBC sports chairman Dick Ebersol's son was killed in a plane crash, both attended the funeral service, and Simon performed a song at the service.
There seems to be a rather long history between the two. I still like the Chevy Chase idea better.

I used to watch the Costas interviews way back when..I grew up in a home where Mickey Mantle was king.
I used to like his interview style but he got too full of himself at one point-imo..hope he remembers the show isn't about him..
lol
Ebersol was involved in the sports end of the network so Costas and him were meant to be..lol
I hope he doesn't sing..

Costas...sing??! Oh good gosh no!
I'm glad to see Paul Simon being honored that way,he certainly does deserve it. His songs are timeless.

Well, I channeled surfed into the PBS airing tonight. Very entertaining and highly recommended. Watch for re-airings, or check YouTube for snippets. My favorite was Stevie Wonder flubbing 'Love Me Like A Rock', and then making a nice recovery.
P.S. Bob Costas was splendid.
