Bee Gees to be honoured

In the '70s, they sang the soundtrack for the disco scene with hits including "You Should Be Dancing" and "Stayin' Alive." Now, the Bee Gees are being honoured as icons at BMI's 55th annual Pop Awards.

The awards will be presented May 15.

The Bee Gees, short for the Brothers Gibb, included twins Maurice and Robin, and older brother Barry. Maurice Gibb died in January 2003 after emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage. He was 53.

Their younger brother, Andy Gibb, who had a successful solo career, died in 1988 at age 30 of a heart ailment. The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

I used to love listening to the Bee Gees when I owned the Lumina. I had a custom stereo installed, with speakers all through the car, 1500 watts of amplification, a sub woofer. What a beast that was. I used to take it to town to get groceries, and the minute I parked, there was a group of kids that would want to hear it. I remember one day, parked outside Thompson's Grocery, I cranked it real loud. I swear, the windows were moving to the beat. People in the store were peaking out the windows. Then, a cop drive by and waved his finger at me. Ooops... time to turn it down! What a hoot my kids, and the local kids, got from a middle aged woman with a wild stereo system.
Bee Gees sounded great on it!

The Bee Gees deserve every honor they're considered for.

Although,as far as their song,"First OF May" goes,I'd honor that song with the Razzie as their overall worst top 40 hit.

well, what a songwriting archive they've accumulated...some interesting compositions, vox arrangements and production stylings panning a few genres...i could never acquire taste for their heavy beat stuff but still love some of the more non-popular stuff like off of Main Course like Country Lanes, Songbird plus many others like Run to Me (i suppose that actually was popular) adn heaps of early stuff...Robin's unmistakable should be insured and put in a time capsule...imo depression's under-rated, such a creative state...love this version of First of May

Funny you mention Lulu,just weeks ago I finally saw,"To Sir,With Love",despite having the single of the same name for about 19 years now.

I also just last month (or early this one) saw her on PBS "My Music" special regarding movie songs. She still looks great.

I meant to mention also that many years ago the late great UK comic Kenny Everett had a killing routine dressed as a Bee
Gee he sang about a "Mass of Chew sets"

When the kids weren't with me, I almost exclusively played Lightfoot CDs. By the time they were teenagers, they were pretty sick of hearing Lightfoot music all the time.
I always turned the subwoofer down when listening to my milder CDs.
