They say that ash is a poor conductor of heat and will not burn you as long as you do not keep your feet down on the ground for very long.

If you were to leave your feet there for very long, yes, it would burn the tar out of you. But those people on TV hop very quickly through it, never leaving their feet on the ground for more than about a second.
