for a very long time I have wanted to see again a most fantastic piece of advertising tomfoolery based on the World War Two Dambusters raid that in my book was the very best ever television commercial and was part of a UK series developing the theme that "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label", today I succeeded in finding it on youtube (I had tried searching a while ago but could not find it,mainly I now realise because in error I thought it was an advert for Heinekin, such is the ephemeral effect of television advertising). today I "youtubed" for "dambusters" and bingo it is at:-

You can download and format convert if necessary using the instructions and programs described on my splendid tutorial on saving and converting youtube videos.
I ran into a problem with one of the free programs I described and have found another to replace it so the tutorial now includes both "youtube grabber" and "youripper'

The commercial takes the Michael of course by illustrating that England also has on ocasion beaten Germany at soccer

As is a recent US PBS New York Channel 13 WNET/ UK Channel 5 documentary that I have purchased the VHS tape of



(currently on sale for $17.49 presumably because a new DVD version will be available on March 1 2007



but on the wiki I read this alarming news
"On 1 September 2006, it was announced that Peter Jackson would produce a remake of the 1954 movie, to be directed by Christian Rivers. Production will commence in 2007"
I do hope they do not over Hollywoodise this as happens too often and credit this as another American WW2 success,
Fortunately the director "Lord Of The Rings" Kiwi Peter Jacksom according to his wiki (golly Moses "wiki" is an anagram of "kiwi"):-
"Jackson will produce a remake of The Dam Busters in 2007, along with Sir David Frost as Executive Producer."
So hopefully true blue Brit Sir David will curb any wild excesses or attempts to modify history.Another of the Black Label series extends the German theme to their well known habit of monopolising swimming pool and beach sunbeds so try:-

This reminded me of the apochryphal yarn of the beach in Majorca where a brite Brit early one morning arranged the beach towels of a group of Germans at his hotel into a fine wastika on the beach

Funny. I don't think we got that ad on this side of the pond. We had Mabel:

Mabel the Waitress - During the 1950s Carling Black Label featured an attractive blond beer toting waitress named Mabel in a series of animated Carling Black Label beer commercials. When a customer wanted a beer they cried "Hey, Mabel!, Black Label!" Mabel the bartendress rarely spoke in the commercials but at the end of each spot she gave the TV viewers a friendly wink. The campaign was created by Lang, Fisher, & Stashower in the 1940s. Their ad jingle was written by Phil Davis. Actress Jean Goodspeed, a New York actress and model portrayed Mabel beginning in 1951. However, in the mid-1950s, Goodspeed ended her career to become a mother and Carling Black Label folks decided to animate the Mabel character but also thought it wise to insert images of the original Mabel (Goodspeed) for good measure. The ads ran successfully for twenty years. Finally, in 1970, a new actress was cast in the role, but soon after, the Mabel character faded into advertising history. Note: The Carling Black Label slogan in the 1940s was "Pass Up 'Ladies Beer'....Be A Man About It, Drink Stag!" The "Mabel, Black Label" slogan was coined in 1951.

Thank you Annie for your American perspective. The UK Carling ad series were wonderul, somewhere I have another one on a VHS tape, that was a piss take on a then-current Levi 501 Jeans commercial and featured a well known UK male model (Nick Kamen) stripping off in a laundromat watched by the same two actors who played the pilots in the the dambusters raid CBL commercial who comment:-
"I bet he drinks Carling Black Label"
"Nah, he doesn't wash his underpants"
