Big 'Crossing' point
arrives for Hennessy

By MARISA GUTHRIE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Jill Hennessy will work on her 'folky Americana' record during the 'Crossing Jordan' break.

NBC's "Crossing Jordan" ends the season with a milestone and a cliffhanger.
The May 7 finale, in which Jordan (Jill Hennessy) finds herself the prime suspect in the murder of her former beau, marks the show's 100th episode.

The hour ends ambiguously: The murder leads Jordan to Washington, D.C., in search of the truth. But fans of the show may have a long wait for answers to this mystery.

The Sunday night show will be displaced in the fall by football. According to Hennessy, the network is likely to keep the show on Sundays, but delay the premiere until January.

"I think [the network] is definitely going to wait until midseason," said Hennessy. "That's sort of the in-house rumors I've been hearing, and I think it's a really wise move on NBC's part to acquire Sunday night football and target that male demographic, especially since ABC's [Sunday] lineup is such a female juggernaut."

Hennessy said there was another rumor, that "Crossing Jordan" would be moved next fall to Friday, a night that has been challenging for NBC.

But, she said, after five seasons and 100 episodes, "I'm just happy to be on at all."

An NBC spokeswoman said no programming decisions have been made for the fall.

Hennessy will spend her hiatus at home in New York, recording her first CD. The actress, who names Sarah McLachlan, Gordon Lightfoot, Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen among her influences, calls her style "folky Americana."

"Some of it's a little dark," she said. "A couple of people started crying when they heard one of my songs."

Before her big acting break on "Law & Order," Hennessy was a regular on the New York City music scene. She played guitar and sang in bands that gigged at places like Cafe Sine, Back Fence and the Red Lion.

Since she'll be taking time to work on her music, might she take it for a test drive at, say, friend and former "Law & Order" castmate Chris Noth's club The Cutting Room?

"He's actually asked me to sing there a couple of times, and I've never been in town at the appropriate time to make that work," said Hennessy. "I'd love to sing at Chris' place. I love that guy."

Jill Hennessy is an actress; she played Assistant DA Claire Kincaid on "Law and Order" (1993-1996) before headlining the show "Crossing Jordan." Think lanky brunette. Blurb from the cast bio:

Twin sister of Jaqueline Hennessy, the two played twins in Dead Ringers, Jill's film debut. Hennessy joins the cast of Law & Order as Assistant DA Claire Kincaid in the series' fourth season. She was born in Alberta, Canada, speaks several languages and studied improvisational comedy with the famed Second City comedy theater before making her way to the stage in The Buddy Holly Story. Hennessy's film credits include Robo Cop 3, I Shot Andy Warhol, A Smile Like Yours, Row Your Boat, Chutney Popcorn, Exit Wounds, Autumn in New York, Love in the Time of Money and Pipe Dreams. She also appeared in the TNT Original miniseries Nuremberg, for which she received a Golden Satellite Award from the International Press Academy. Hennessy went on from Law & Order to lead the series Crossing Jordan.

When I got this article from Google news, I sent it on to John. I couldn't believe the serendipidous overlap: Crossing Jordan - a favorite show, Lightfoot and folk music, and Law & Order. I am a L&O junkie. I watch it for about 6 hours a day. Law & Order, Law & Order SVU, Law & Order CI ... and the occasional rerun of the ill-fated L&O Trial by Jury.

For those who watch CI, Chris is the tall, darker haired lead who is usually paired with the dark-haired leading lady. The show has two sets of leads, with a big debate as to which will continue. Most like Noth's pair better, but I happen to like the other, quirkier pair.

Now you know more about L&O than you want to, I'm sure. I think that Jill played a medical examiner on some episode of another L&O, possibly as a pilot for her own show. I remember seeing such an episode and it was the first time I had associated Jill with L&O. I didn't realize she had been on it for years. I guess the reruns haven't gotten to those seasons yet!

We're actually going down to NYC the weekend of Doug's graduation. We have plans for one night, but I am tempted to investigate Chris' place too!

I gotta go visit Chris' place next time I am in NYC. I am a big fan. I even forgive him for choosing to marry Sarah Jessica Parker in SITC.
Maybe we should arrange a 'get together' in NYC ... :D

I think Chris and Vincent would be great together - they'd drive each other crazy, LOL. I haven't decided how well Annabella Sciorra works with Chris Noth's Mike Logan. Poor Kathryn Erbe (Alexandra Eames) gets shuffled into the background so much sometimes you'd think Jamey Sheridan (Captain Deakins) was Bobby Goren's partner instead, and I like her. Why she hasn't popped him one yet is a mystery to me. Sometimes Det. Goren knows entirely TOO much. Mike Logan feels authentic.

Hey! You are an L&O junkie too! I have to think hard to come up with the names, even though I watch these shows every day (L&O is on TNT as I speak, er, type).

I like the quirky Goren/Erbe pair a lot more. I guess I feel some sort of kinship with them! They are both a bit strange, and I love how much Goren knows about just about everything. I read somewhere that Goren/Erbe are being phased out and most reviewers seem to think that's a good idea. But I'm sure you can guess what I think of most reviewers!

Yeah it's on a half dozen times a day on different stations (sometimes simultaneously) so I don't have to go long without a fix. I most prefer the "classic" L&O - great twists at the end sometimes, and then there's the late great Jerry Orbach. Heck I first saw Sam Waterston on stage at the old Winter Garden Theater in New York in the early 70s as Benedict in "Much Ado About Nothing" with Kathleen Widdoes as Beatrice - on my birthday, no less. It was wonderful.
