Its just a Catagory 1 hurricane, how bad can it be?
Pretty darn bad, apparently!
Hi all, I'm sitting here in North Miami, close to where Hurricane Katrina has made landfall and we are being rocked by winds alot stronger than I expected. So far, our power is still on, but its flickered a few times and I don't expect it to last long. So, I'm writing quickly. We've lost some screens, trees, the neighbor's shingles seem to be flying off and the green "lightening" that is a hallmark of hurricanes is flashing every few seconds.
Its not nearly as bad as Hurricane Andrew was, but since we're right near the eye, its actually quite a bit worse than the stronger hurricanes whose centers came ashore north of where I live last year.
And what the heck is that BANGING NOISE OUTSIDE??
Anyway, we've got a few more hours, maybe even a day left till the entire hurricane passes by us. Wish us luck and say a prayer for us Lightheads down Miami ways!
Erica

Hang on Erica!! I just can't imagine what it would be like in a hurricane. Never heard of "green" lightning. I think next one you should come to Colorado and visit. Hang on, I'm thinking of you!

Hi Sheryl,
I'm fine, thanks for asking. A downed wooden fence is about the worst damage we had.
It was a few years old and was already leaning a little bit, so it was only a matter of time till it went anyway.
Other than that, we came through it all pretty well. Didn't even lose electricity. I know alot of
folks are still without power, so I certainly can't complain.
I really feel for the those who are going to be in the path of this hurricane when it makes landfall as a Cat. 3 or 4 later this week. I think its going to be a real monster when it comes ashore again.

Ive always wanted to visit Colorado,so I just might take up up on the offer!
Green lightning BTW, is a phenomenon that occurs when very high winds cause powerlines to arc together or when those winds make the transformers blow. The whole sky flashes bright aqua. Its a really eerie thing to watch and when you see it you realize you're in the middle of something very powerful.

Okay, I know "green lightning" I would see that when I was in Minnesota during Tornado season. Come visit we don't have Hurricanes in Colorado, it is much safer. Grab Lori and come on up.

I wouldn't imagine while you are in the midst of an earthquake you would be watching the light poles. You miss so much out there.

We're fine, Sheryl. At least I and my family are. I know some folks are still without power, but all in all, we in South Florida got away lucky.
However bad Katrina might have been when it hit us, its going to be a whole lot worse when it hits land again.
This thing is HUGE! And now the news channels are reporting that its become a Catagory 5!
It looks even worse than Andrew did. I think this is going to be one of those disasters that is still talked about years afterwards.

I'll definitely be thinking about everyone down that way (I'm in Colorado too), my husband is in Georgia all this upcoming week. Never have been in that kind of a storm. Hoping all turns out well!

Looks like my fears proved true unfortunately.
It might not have been a cat 5 when it hit, but as we've all seen over the last few days, the effects of Katrina were far worse than Andrew. It has turned out to be, as I said, one of those disasters that will be talked about for years afterwards.
I never really believed anything could be worse than that monster in 1992, but Katrina sadly was.
Its strange to think we were hit dead on by the same storm, but of course it really wasn't the same one. Compared to what she turned into, Katrina was still a baby when she blew through South East Florida.
What a sad time this is. I hope those poor suffering people get some relief soon. I wish I could get it to them, but all I, like most of us can do is donate to the relief efforts and send up lots of prayers.

I see where, among thousands of others in New Orleans, Fats Domino is missing as well. My uncle (by marriage) has family in Biloxi and they have lost some homes, cars but no lives. They've scattered to Jackson MS and San Antonio TX for now. They had no flood insurance because they've never been flooded that far up, so the property damage will clobber them.

Update on Fats Domino:
I read in this morning's paper that he did survive the flooding - his daughter identified a photo of him by the New Orleans Picayune showing him being helped off a boat near his home in the city's lower 9th ward, according to CNN. His whereabouts since the rescue are not known. So he was alive as of Monday night but I don't think his family has had any contact (his daughter lives in New Jersey.)Apparently he refused to leave when the evacuation was underway as so many did. If I hear more, I'll post.

What I am seeing on TV and reading in the press is absolutely heartbreaking, thankfully we here in the UK do not suffer hurricanes.
The devastation caused by this hurricane were unavoidable, and the human spirit, being what it is, will overcome. But the looting is beyond the pale. I hear that a "shoot to kill" policy has been adopted. They should hang a looter from very lamp post as a warning to others. A tad "right wing" I know. But these people disgust me.
The people of Louisiana are in our prayers.

Fats Found:
Music Legend 'Fats' Domino Coping With Katrina
By Eli Saslow
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 2, 2005; 4:39 PM
BATON ROUGE, La., Sept. 2 -- New Orleans music legend Antoine "Fats" Domino survived Hurricane Katrina, but he's still unsure, he said Friday, about how he will survive its aftermath.
Domino spent the last three nights sleeping on a couch in the two-bedroom, Baton Rouge apartment of Louisiana State starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a distant family friend. Domino left that apartment Friday afternoon with his wife, two of his daughters and a son-in-law. He had no idea, he said, where he would go next.
"We've lost everything," Domino said. "I don't know what we're going to do."
Domino and his family waited out the storm on the third floor of his apartment in New Orleans, he said. The water level rose to about 15 feet, threatening the stability of the third floor. Rescue workers saved Domino, 77, late Monday night, taking him out of the city by boat.
They transported him to a shelter in Baton Rouge, where Domino and his family received anti-bacterial shots. After two hours at the shelter, Domino called Russell, who came to pick him up.
"Without JaMarcus, it would have been even worse," Domino said. "We can't thank him enough for letting us stay.
"I'm worried about all the people in New Orleans. Tell them I love them, and I wish I was home with them. I hope we'll see them soon," Domino said.
Russell has had more than 15 people stay in his off-campus apartment since the hurricane hit, he said. When Domino arrived, Russell ran out to Wal-Mart to buy food and water. He went to a drug store, he said, to fill prescriptions at 3 a.m.
The sophomore quarterback -- who had met Domino only once before, through his girlfriend -- said he had not slept for two days. He needed to get a hydrating IV during Thursday's practice of the LSU football team. The team's game against North Texas scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.
"Fats just stayed at my apartment, rested, watched the news," Russell said. "I've had people sleeping on the floor, the couch, everywhere. It's been pretty crazy."
Those closest to Domino had feared the R&B legend might not be okay.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, whose hit singles include "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That a Shame," did not contact anybody in the three days after the hurricane. His agent, Al Embry, reported him missing earlier this week, and concern about his fate grew until his daughter, Karen Domino White, said Thursday that she had recognized her father in a picture taken Monday by the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Domino wore jeans and a blue striped shirt, she said.
He was wearing the same outfit when he left Baton Rouge Friday afternoon.
