Ye gads, my first thought on seeing these is CRUNCH! Can you picture them next to some of the behemoths on the road today? Or under them as they roll over the itty-bitty cars? Ouch!

FWIW I don't drive anything - I walk or bus everywhere.

Further to my earlier posting in today's (emailed) UK Expat (Daily) Telegraph was a nice little pic of a Smart car proudly emblazoned "Polizei" so I went a'googling and soon I found this striking image:-

Looks a lot like the 'KA' which can be seen on the roads in Britain. Not overly popular but ecomonical, I believe. Not for me.

Some years ago, here in the UK, a bright spark, name of Clive Sinclair, came up with the above abomination. The Sinclair C5) He felt it would revolutionise cycling. Fat chance. Imagine jousting with the biggies in this thing. It died a very quick death, and rightly so.

The car shown by John et al. reminds me of the SMART car we see here in the UK.

That car you posted, Jim, looks a lot like the new "golf cart" they're trying to sell over here for around town driving. No doors -- it's a golf cart! Only thing is, in the back there's a bit of a trunk, I think. They're selling them at Costco (large warehouse store over here). I've never seen any on the road, though. Too many darned Hummers, SUV's, etc. around. These little cars'd get squished, not to mention the contents thereof!!

In road-going mode the Transition's driven by a 30MPG regular gasoline engine that powers its front wheels. And fantastically the same engine also drives the vehicle's pusher-propeller. When its flying it can manage 115mph (its unclear whether that's air-speed or ground speed) and has a 450-mile range. The wings electrically crank in on the ground, meaning it'll fit into a regular garage, and it even has regular car-like access doors--that automotive design is continued into the vehicle's crash structures too. Flying it requires a Sport Pilot's License.

When I was a kid they were marketing the Amphicar which could double as a boat. I saw one tooling along on the lake where I grew up. Pretty neat. Came close to buying one as a hobby years ago until I figured I'm not mechanically inclined enough to afford an oddball car like that.
