I think "witless" is an apt description for one who doesn't get that "major" is not a military rank in this case, but a level of degree - you know, the opposite of "minor"

I never said he wasn't a Major - I don't know him, so I have no idea if he is a military man or not - what I said was that major, in the context of his screen name, had no relation to military rank.
