Hi ELizabeth
No you are not alone the subject of the naughty but nice other meaning of Spanish Moss has been featured before on the Newsgroup in a sensitive reply by Erica/Sundreme (who I am therefore surprised to see has not leapt into this topic already so I have just replied to the Newsgroup thread subject "Gord's women" which has now brought it back to the top of the thread list there

John, Thanks for your response to my 'naughty' idea concerning SM. I would love to read Sundreme's sensitive response but I don't have any idea how to get to the Newsgroup. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif Can you help? Sorry for the ignorance.

Yes well there are other fans on the Newsgroup who, have had to admit that they knew not how to access corfid (can you believe that ??!!).Anyroad it just so happens that I have made up a pair of short "user-friendly" URL links as follows:-
1.corfid
http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
That will take you directly to the topic list of the main Gordon lightfoot forum (this one) and you can easily transfer to either of the other two forums by simply utilising the "hop to" drop down selection box at the bottom of every listing or topic page
2.similarly with no fuss or effort you can get to the latest (revised) Google Groups thread listing for the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot by using this similarly brilliant invention of mine:-
http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
Google used to have an annoying habit of telling you that your nice spanking new posting would not appear on their listing for some unfathomable reason for 3 to 9 hours and they meant it but fortunately they have recently replaced the original with a beta version that now says your posting will appear momentarily and it seems to take only a few seconds.Still not as quick as the virtually immediate updating if you can tame the newsreader/your ISP link in Internet Explorer's Outlook Express. Don't ask me if you can do the same with Netscrape or the new demon Firefox, I haven't faced that challenge yet anyone else have any ideas/ or experience in that regard ??
Note that both the above shortutrls should be a cinch to incorporate into your head's memory or after opening add to your favo(u)rites/bookmarks:-
I have two further short urls to offer:-
3 the main ebay.com GL listing
http://www.ebaylightfoot.shorturl.com
which takes you directly to the current ebay listing of GL auctions sorted by most recent additions first or for UK punters:-
4.ebay uk listing (although usually the UK.... and Canadian items appear in the main ebay.com listing
http://www.ebayuklightfoot.shorturl.com
Note that when I devised all the above at:-
http://www.shorturl.com
the service was completely free but new shorturls are being charged for
so I said "sod that for a bunch of bananas" and then discovered a still free alternative at:-

OH MY GOSH!!! Only one favorite? I guess at first I'd say "If you could read my mind" because it was the first one I heard and absolutely fell in love with GL right there and then. But actually ALL of his music is perfect. His voice is sooooo good, kinda sad and meloncholy(sp?) yet happy and very, very sexy. His songs can make me cry my eyes out and then right away make me happy. "Old Dan's records" always makes me happy as does "Carefree highway"
I had a friend who named his dog Sundown because of GL's song. I guess I just LOVE them all!!!!

I would have to say "Carefree Highway". This song reminds of family members, the few friends that i knew in church that have all departed this life into everlasting life. They are not suffering anymore. As for me, it means overcoming many heartaches that I have went through in my own life and now I am free from that hurt to move on to something better. For me this song has a spiritual meaning. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Trying to answer which Lightfoot tune is your favorite is virtually impossible, yet elementary. It's like trying to say which beer is your favorite, the answer is "the one in front of you of course".
And so it is with Lightfoot, I found myself listening to "Song for a Winters Night" just today and thought it to be my "favorite" and then I heard "Ordinary Man" a bit later and, you get the picture. The guy is just too great.
Joe
ps I went to Cathy Cowette's site and heard her rendition of SFAWN, awesome. Makes me proud to be a fellow Mainer (that is if Cathy is gracious enough to consider a Portlander a Mainer) she'll know what that means.

Totally agree with you there, Joe. I keep changing my fav, too. Some songs I'll have heard a few times, then I'll hear it and WHAMMO! It hits me behind the eyes and I'm in love with it -- I "get" it suddenly. The Man's a genius.

Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday, and yes it's an impossible topic, he's written so many truly great songs. But when I think about a GL song I always delight in hearing and playing and singing in all times and places and moods it's "The House You Live In" off Summertime Dream. "Don Quixote" is a close second, "Magnificent Outpouring" third.

Christian Island. May sound lame, but I remember that song from so long ago and it always evoked these wonderful feelings of just being on that b oat and being free...much better than the real thing. We have a boat and I never go out on it. It was the joy of the singer and the great heart that went into this song that just got to me. All of my Lightfoot vinyls were ruined in Puerto Rico due to mold (everything there rots, believe me!) and I had a Gord's Gold CD and recently bought a double CD of best of's, but no Christian Island. So one of my kids went on a search and finally turned up Don Quixote. Well, of course! How could I have forgotten? So now I've got this wonderful salty seaful song, and it is every bit as good as I remembered it to be.

Why thank you , Joe! SFAWN is definitely my favorite Lightfoot song, although there are several that sit in second place. I've played that song for quite a few years, but it was just a few years ago that I figured out an intro that worked, not exactly what Terry plays, but enough to make the song familiar to any Lightfoot fan when I start playing it.
Sure you're a Mainer. You're in the other Maine, the one that sits below Aroostook County. Both Maines have their good points and their bad points. I enjoy the tranquility and laid back life of Northern Maine, but I hate the five and a half hour drive it takes to get out of the state.
I have a son who lives in Gorham, so I visit your area often. My favorite place in Portland is Buckdancers Music, the best guitar shop in Maine, in my opinion.

my favorite song is tears in heaven, yknow that one he wrote for his son who died. it really makes me cry. they played it at my prom and we were all crying it was so sad. didn't his son like fall out a window?

Carefree Highway - Reminds me of waking up in the morning, taking a shower and jumping in the car, heading to a place somewhere far away, not knowing where exactly I am going. Just wherever the wind takes me.....wondering who I might meet on the way.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. After hearing it the first time, I researched the ship. The song makes my hair stand on end and gives me goosebumps. One of the greatest songs ever written...and for a good purpose.
2nd would be The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Excellent! And, can the man sing! Another "hair-raiser". Gives me chills.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one of my all time favourites. When I was in my early ywenties in the seventies I used to sit and record the song from the radio and write down all the words so that I could sing the song all the way through. I'm now 53 and can still sing the song word for word. I've never forgotten it all these years on. PS I'm in London,England.

Have been reading the posts with great interest. I seems almost impossible to pick a favourite. They are all so beautiful...all capture the deepest feelings and experiences of human existance. The feelings they convey are so universal, transcending all cultures, and all generations. Singer, composer, guru,
minstrel, hero, and yet one of us. Husband, father, friend, and genuinally beautiful
person. Are we not profoundly lucky to be his fans? Thank you Gord!
Everytime I go to the supermarket, it seems that they are playing Gord's music. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif, and I have to make sure I stand in the right place under the speakers to hear it all. Today it
was "Carefree Highway". It makes me want to hurry home and put on his music. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
Today, because we have snow.....keep thinking of "Song for A Winter's Night", and "Whispers of the North".
Just can't seem to pick a favourite, as I totally love them all. They seem to weave a story of our lives. They are so much a part of life in our family.
Thank you Gord...you are one of a kind. We love you and your music more than you can ever know.

The Canadian Railroad Trilogy would be my #1 favorite.
Why? I had my first trip to Canada a couple of years ago(Banff, Jasper) and took the greatest hits with me on the adventure. I knew I would never be the same. My friends with me on the trip also knew they were really hearing Lightfoot for the 1st time while we drove along the most beautiful mountains and wilderness we had ever seen.
Then flying out of Calgary, listening to Early Morning Rain on my walkman, pulling up above the clouds with the Canadian Rockies down below. I want to live it again one day!!

The Canadian Railroad Trilogy would be my #1 favorite.

Having spent some time looking at favourite song entries it is clear I have nowhere near the breadth of knowledge of G.'s music. I have very recently bought a live DVD "Live in Reno" and the Canadian Railroad trilogy which I have heard many times before continues to grow on me , was wonderful. My 3 favourites though are "the Wreck..." (not very original I know.) "The House You Live In's" lyrics are a lesson in themselves , but I love the uplifting and joyful ,(maybe rather less profound), "Summertime Dream" which I love so much I intend to have it played at my funeral - hopefully in around 40 years time! A celebration of life song. P.S. I wish Gord. would tour in Australia - I don't think he ever has.

This is my first post and I haven't read all the messages yet(it will take years, I think).
I don't have a favorite song either...There are just too many. I have always fancied myself a devout Lightfoot fan. However, after browsing this message board, I'm lacking true knowlege! I have seen Gordon in concert 12 times beginning in the late 60's to 1999(?). If he ever gets within a hundred miles of me, I will see him again.
My favorite concert was in the early 70's...at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit (now long gone)...It was a World Hunger Benefit with Gordon, John Denver, James Taylor and Harry Chapin...no bands...just the four of them, in the round, with their guitars. They sang alone and together. It was very memorable and maybe my favorite concert of all time.
I wanted to share, but I've been reading this board for so long I'm crossed eyed! Good night.

The breadth, scope and brilliance of Gords portfolio is nothing short of astounding...he simply never wrote a bad song. Like the Beatles,Simon and Garfunkel Dylan and very few others,,you can only measure the greatness of one of his songs relative to his many masterpieces. Like the other aforementioned artists,GL is a genius and a master. He occupies a unique place in the parthenon of musical giants.

I think my favorite is his little-known and little-performed "Miguel." With its Spanish flavor, lovely melody, and haunting lyrics, the song is different from most of his much admired standbys. It appears only on his "Summer Side of Life" album. If you get a chance, you should listen to it.

Wow, it was fun to read everyones favourites, as they included so many songs Gordon doesn't usually play. My favourites are "Affair on 8th Avenue" for a girl I dated and almost married in high school and shadows, because now I'm fifty two, and it's the way I feel about love....So many good choices Seven Islands, High and Dry, Summer Side of Life...if you're listening Gordie, play some of these if you travel east to Reno, or north to Mendicino....
Thanks, John Miatech in Sebastopol Calif (I gave you some crystals for the kids a few years back at Luther Burbank, remember?).

That's like asking a shark what his favorite food is! One of my favs is "I'll Do Anything" off the Shadows album. It's just a beautifully-arranged and played song. "Miguel", and "The Circle is Small" are also great songs. But, I really like "Inspiration Lady" off the Harmony album. In fact, we're naming our new yacht "Inspiration Lady."

I've been taking in the many earlier pages of folk's favorites. It's a fine road to travel (Fine as Fine Can Be?)
But, I must take this moment to say that after first hearing of Brave Mountaineers, I've never since worn a wrist watch.
I'd already wanted to do that when Captain America tossed his away in '69. The Brave Mountaineers, never much bothered by time you know, made me stick to it.

Why? I guess because I remember listening to it as a kid in the 70's & 80's and it sort of putting me in this far off slightly erie place mentally. I could picture every part of the song in my head and placed myself in it and felt the emotions of the characters. It still scares the hell out of me, but I love it.

My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". I am a former sailor and I HAVE been through 2 different hurricanes (David and Frederic) and I KNOW just exactly what it feels like...how helpless you are when there are 100 mph winds and HUGE waves out in the middle of nowhere. You cannot merely "pull off the road" so to speak. It is not a good feeling.

This year is 30 years. My fellow sailors will NOT be forgotten. Here is my personal tribute to them I hope you enjoy and think of them as I do. Amen

What makes Gordon Lightfoot my favorite all-time singer/songwriter is his ability to reach people of all age groups and locales, and the fact that his music is just so timeless, profound, and memorable. I'm new to this site and must agree with the posts that liken his degree of fame to other music legends like Lennon, Dylan, etc. I can ramble endlessly about how he 'stikes every chord' of emotion and sings about so many different people, places, and experiences, but many of you have already given him that wonderful tribute. Many Thanks. What makes this gifted man so remarkable to me is the fact that through it all, he has remained a humble and 'ordinary man' in his mannerism and personality. It's refreshing to see such rare and admirable qualities in a world-reknown artist in today's age of glitz and glammor. Choosing a favorite song/s would be most difficult, but if I must,.... well,....OK, here goes: 1. Home From the Forest 2. Highway Songs 3. Song For a Winter's Night 4. The Watchman's Gone 5. Looking At the Rain ---- A decade ago I crawled out of the bottle for the last time, so song # 1 really does hit 'home', and it serves as a haunting reminder of what could have been. Song #2 resonates over and over as I'm traversing the scenic backroads of America on my Harley Softail. Song #3 conjers the image of my soulmate(who I've yet to meet) and I taking a horse drawn sleigh ride through the snow covered countryside on a cold, starry night. Song #4 bespeaks the 'watchman' inside of us all(our own human limitations), and how much better life could be if we could know that 'the watchman's gone'. Song #5 touches the heart of everyone who has lost someone. Finally, If ever I get the golden opportunity to meet Gordon in person, I would have to thank him for the gift of his music, and that his words carried me through my dark times, as well as made the happy times even brighter. How often does someone we've never met before become one of our best friends through their music?

Evenin' all,
What a wonderous adventure it is winding thru this fabric-maze of thread: some new and barely known, some obscure discoveries, and some very familiar old friends.
While I've mentioned most beloved tunes here before, I realize they ebb and flow with my own tides.
Lately I've found myself both listening-in, and then playing, two to the seabirds.
The Leaves of Grass, and
Black Day in July
With appologies to those seabirds,

I would have to agree with the Rez, it was very interesting for me to read each of your reasons for choosing a particular Gord song. Some just liked the tune, some liked the lyrics, some were touched personally by Gord's magic. For me it would have to be " Leaves Of Grass" and this is for the reason that I was touched by Gord's magic in his writing in my particular time of need. I noted some of you talking about the recent events in Alberta over the past few weeks and saw your posts with pictures of the "sea of red". I too have seen this up close and personal as I am an Emergency Services worker. You can substitute blue for the color of the uniform, and the hats look different but it was very much the same. At that time this song and fellowship with brothers and sisters helped me get through some very tough times. I still think of those times and my feelings every time I hear or sing this song. Many of Gord's songs have special meaning for me but this one can help me relate to my being, and my feelings about a very important time in my life. I really believe that music is a therapy of sorts if you are able to relate what you hear to your personal situation. A really timeless song, eerily relevant in 1969 when originally recorded, 2001 (9/11), 2002 (May 27, Billy you are not forgotten) or 2005.

Yesterday a friend asked me when I first came to love John Denver's music. Knowing and loving are two different things.
Ever since that question, I've been re-running a time capsule to answer the question. The time capsule also contains a tune sung by Gord I hadn't thought of in quite a spell, yet have revisited more often than tongue can tell.
One of the few Gord didn't write:
"Like crippled ships that made it throught the storm and finally reached a quiet shore, the homeless found a home On Susan's Floor."
The time capsule:
The early 70s; North Shore Lake Tahoe; a gentle young lady - called herself Sam - took in Stray Dogs.
They would drape themselves all over the furniture; pass the chips; pass the pipe; pass the guitar; and pass sweet fellowship.
The evening would begin to the soft John Denver and Poems, Prayers, and Promises floating from the stereo. Thus began the sharing, the caring, and the circle.
A breath would occasionally occur. Sam would play just the right song for the moment on the stereo. Then the Stray Dogs would resume their stories.
Sam would choose the time to bring the evening to a close W/ the playing of Shell Silverstein's beautiful lyric flowing from Gordon Lightfoot via the stereo.
The Stray Dogs would slowly move from the furniture to the floor, and become still - the homeless found a home On Susan's Floor.
As breathing came more deeply, Sam would play John Stewart and Chilly Winds - as those sweet dreams would come . . .
I can't sing those songs without seeing that scene so long ago - as present as breath - and for a priceless moment, young.

The Rez is Right ---- It'd be hard not to agree with you on the notion that a 'favorite' would depend on one's state of mind at the time, aside from those few that reach down to the level of the soul. The way in which a song reaches each one of us is so subjective, since we all have that defining power of association. Science is only beginning to understand how various sounds affect us. We just get in touch with how a song makes us feel. How interesting to read other interpretations of songs I've heard for three decades now.

Being the rabid Gordon Lightfoot that I am this question comes my way frequently and I never know how to respond. Most times I try and deflect it by saying something stupid like "in which category?" In the late sixties at a concert in the little town of Alliston, Ontario Gord appeared there with his two band members at the time, Red Shea and John Stockfish. For the very first time I heard him perform "Bitter Green" and he make the reference that "This is a GOOD song." When it came out on the "Back Here On Earth" albumn I ended up taking a week off work just so I could have the time to absorb that recording at my leisure. Bitter Green turned out to be a song that grew on me in a way like no other Lightfoot song ever did. It is unique in the fact that Gord fingerpicks it on the six string guitar in the "drop D" tuning. I know of no others in that particular tuning on the six string guitar. His bigger songs like "Early Morning Rain" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" are done in the "drop D" tuning but they are strummed and played on the twelve string. Bitter Green is my favoutite song TODAY! RJ.

Hi everybody!
I just found this site and have been reading this thread. I've been a huge Lightfoot fan since If You Could Read My Mind first hit the radio so many years ago. I've seen him in concert more times than I can remember. As for a favorite song, that would be almost impossible to say. He has created more of my Favorite Songs than anyone else (except for possibly Al Stewart). Shadows might be his most beautiful. Or maybe Affair on 8th Avenue.... on the other hand, Canadian Railroad Trilogy is astounding in a different way. The man is a genius with few equals in his field, and I'm looking forward to seeing him again this summer in Glenside, PA.

Approaching Lavender . . .
Gord once said, years ago, he was a bit let down that no one had come to him to tell him they'd named their daughter Lavender.
In younger years I approached a lady called Lavender. It was her "hippie name." I'm glad I never knew her borning name.
She was everything expressed in Gord's song. Hence her "hippie name."
In older years, I had a daughter. Her name is Summer Joy. I don't know if I want her to become too familiar w/ "Approaching Lavender" just yet . . . the lonesome hippie says.
But, oh, how right about the song and the time, and . . .
. . . for the Love beyond our lives,

A small PS:
That little scrap of lyric I use as a signature could be well called Approaching Lavender #2 (minus the genius, of course.)
It is a song memorializing that time and space for "hippie names"; written at the time of Lavender; same meter and feel as Gord's gem; my young attempt; my elder friend . . .
Why did I happen here so late in the night? It's not at all fair . . .

I'm not as familiar with GL's music as I'd like to be, but right now my favorite of his is "The Watchman's Gone" from 'Sundown'. The idea of a couple of 'Brothers of the Road' appeals to me.

Approaching Lavender; that's one of my favorites too, along with a whole list of little-known songs that never got played on the radio and never will, but I "rediscover" them whenever I play an album. Saturday Clothes, Your Love's Return, Miguel, Go My Way, Same Old Loverman, Spanish Moss....every album has a few of them.

Tough to pic a favourite song ... kind of like trying to decide which time you had sex was the best :) ... in any event:
1) The Ballad of Yarmouth Castle has always struck a chord with me. The lyrics are haunting and you think you are there watching that ship and her crew/passengers meeting their final demise.
2) Seven Island Suite ... another that really grabs me ... seems to embody so much of how I feel and think.
3) Song for a Winter's Night ... is a really sweet tune. Romance, hope and longing all there in one great moment.
4) It Worth Believin' ... Is another one that seems to reach down into the being of many people, myself included.
5) The Circle is Small ... who has not felt that at one tiem or another ... again most of us have been there.
6) Now and Then ... great song about the possibilities of love rekindled, but knowing that going might be the way too.
Jeez ... I could go on forever .. they guy is just a musical genius, plain and simple!!!

Sundown is probably my favourate song .I first heard it when I was 16. And even today the opening
chords still make the hair on the back of my neck
spring up.And as soon as I heard No doubt about it , on Harmony it had the same effect. It is a very difficult call for a hardcore fan , because The way I feel, through to Endless wire have a similar effect. I think it is fair comment to say that Lightfoot songs never fade and die like so many other songs , they stay with you , never growing old , and are always nudging you and bringing memories flooding back.

My all time favorite Gord song is "Miguel." The first time I saw GL in concert was 1973 at the Cleveland Music Hall. The place was packed! He asked for any requests and I kept screaming "Miguel...Miguel!!" Finally he said "OKAY!" And then he sang the most beautiful version I have ever heard of Miguel.
The second would have to be "Ribbon Of Darkness" as that song took me through a rough time.
Next would be "Tattoo" from the album "Salute" which has many great songs on it.
It is hard to really pinpoint a favorite as everything he composes/sings is wonderful and with that terrific band, well...who could not fall in love with any GL melody.

my favorite song is boss man.
back when I was a wee 17 year old, I dated a girl who was hot, cute, and really nice. well, on the night ofour 1st date, I come to the door, and she answers, and her father tells her to go get ready or something (cant quite remember), and he invites me in. he tells me to have a seat on the couch. he goes back into his room to get something, and then comes out and shows me his 357 magmum! (This guy is about 6 foot 4, and must weigh at least 250 pounds, and he really wouldn't have needed a gun to deal with me) he says "I'm tellin' ya now, sonny, I'm the boss man, and whatever I say goes. And I'm tellin' you right now sonny, i better not catch you kissin or gettin fresh with her or ANYTHING like that, or i'll blow your a** straight to h*ll". Needless to say, I didn't treat her inappropriately or anything.
The entire time we dated, that guy was always trying to terrorizing and harassing me, threatening to beat me up, etc.. he'd always refer to himself as the "boss man". now, i wish i'd have known about the gord song 'boss man' back then :D i never quite forgot that guy, and when i hear the gL song boss man, i get all excited, and I am reminded of that girls mean a** father!
if i'd known about this song back then, i could've told him "it'll be murder in the first degree if you ever lay your hands on me" :D

Favorites:
Is it possible that the songs we call our favorites are the songs that touch a moment in our lives that no one elsen knows.
In the South they say, "You been readin' my mail."
How marvelous; how wonderful, when one man can read so much of my mail for so many moons - and yours. And yet write out of his own need, which may or may not line up w/ our "mail."
Such is art and love: Gord, Van Gogh, Twyla Tharpe, Jane Goodall, Michelangelo, Poor Richard, Rick's Bass glide on Big Blue that paints the most acurate picture of leviatan to shiver my imagination, The Girl w/ The Pearl Earing, The Thinker, Wuthering Heigts while falling in love w/ Emily Bronte 200 yrs gone - The Road, Holden Caulfield, Tom Joad - and . . .
did I mention Gord?
Tonite I'm joinin a certain reverie: The Last Time I Saw Her Face.

The list is as long as the box set for me. But one of my favorites is one that not many Gordo fans pay attention to. It's on the box set, and that's the first I heard of it-"Song for a winter's night". Sitting in a favorite chair in December with all the lights off, maybe some candles and definitely a fire going, and your sweetheart in arm...it doesnt get much better than that. Those sleigh bells ringing, and that quiet clicking sound in the background-the guaranteed way to fall asleep in just under 3 minutes, or something else-if you know what I mean?!

Tatoo is a great song because it reveals so much
in what is said. It has elements of defeatist self pity like so many country songs and yet there is a triumph of love amid the tragedy conveyed in the song. The failure of the night, the druncken indiscretion of wandering back into the parlor actualy becomes a sacred meditation upon the permanence of love and friendship The Tatoo didn't cost much but it blumes on forever like true love. You can't purchas it. When you have it you are stuck with it, even when you are drinking too much and wandering into tatoo parlors. The song has a good melody as well and starts out like a last ditch letter to a lost friend. Whatever you think of me I'm still your friend so other than nothin whats new. You don't know how many times I have wanted to say just that to a lost friend whom I still love.

Those sleigh bells ringing, and that quiet clicking sound in the background-the guaranteed way to fall asleep in just under 3 minutes, or something else-if you know what I mean?! Ah you are wrong Bella, there are many of us that love that song. Gord has been playing it in his concerts lately, sounds fantastic! Little Barry does a great job on the percussion.

"On Susan's Floor" and Gord's story.
That Gord didn't write it (Shel Silversteen and another gentleman whose name I can't get right now) makes no difference at all.
For Gord there was a "Susan."
For Shel there was a "Susan."
For me there was a "Susan"
To be bold, if a young musician didn't have a "Susan" that would be a sorrow.
Still, it is Gord's version that introduced me to the song which describes so perfectly the Scufflin' Days of Dreams.
Just one more night on that long-ago floor - even now for this old man - would be a form of Heaven.

Song For A Winter's Night has always been one of my very favorite Gord tunes. It is 104 out here in the good old LV desert today and I was listening to this song on the way to work! Love those sleigh bells. Also adore "Circle of Steel."

I just had to post the lyrics to this song. It is so beautiful.
Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickerin’ down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people goin’ ’round
Everybody’s in step with the season
A child is born to a welfare case
Where the rats run around like they own the place
The room is chilly, the building is old
That’s how it goes
The doctor’s found on his welfare round
And he comes and he leaves on the double
Deck the halls was the song they played
In the flat next door where they shout all day
She tips her gin bottle back till it’s gone
The child is strong
A week, a day, they will take it away
For they know about all her bad habits
Christmas dawns and the snow lets up
And the sun hits the handle of her heirloom cup
She hides her face in her hands for a while
Says look here child
Your father’s pride was his means to provide
And he’s servin’ three years for that reason
Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickerin’ down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people goin’ ’round
Everybody’s in step with the season

I've only been reading this topic for a few months, and I've already realized tat it would be impossible to say what my favorite Lightfoot song is. There are just too many great ones. I might be able to name 10 or so on any given day, but the next day half of them might be different. I propose narrowing the criteria a bit: What's your favorite CHEERFUL G.L. song? I can only think of a few offhand; Summertime Dream, Hangdog Hotel, Cotton Jenny, Beautiful? Most of his songs are about the traditional Country music topics: Cheating, Love Lost, I Wish I Would Have Done That Differently, with a few about shipwrecks too :) So why is his music so superior to most country stuff? Just pure talent and passion, I guess. Not wearing a big cowboy hat onstage might be a help. too......

It was there...waiting in my heart, I guess...for the right moment and place in time to pull it out again. Even now, at 12, she sometimes asks me to sing it to her again...and for just a little while we share the magic.

Wombat, Mouse, Skeeter, Bigfoot, et. al. (bad gag!) but it reminded me of that great song "All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir" Probably "Creatures," but I sing "Critters."
I still sing "Fine as Fine Can Be" to my sons (married w/ wives of their own.) I sing it to Mama. I sing it to Memories. Sometimes, I even sing it to just hear the words float and the melody soar. Often I sing it for people who never heard of Gord, just to see any reaction. Some do. Hope.
Regarding your suggestion of Cherrful farorites: Not a bad idea. Old Dan's Records gets me a-cloggin - especially that line about the "78s".
But, to me, I figure it's sorta like Pete Seger quoted from Eccesiastes: "To everything there is a season." Sometimes those seasons aren't Cheerful. Sometime the last thing a body wants to hear is Happy-Whoopie stuff. Other times - let 'er rip.
To limit Ecclesiastes balances would be a sorrow. Same-same Gord's touch.
As a writer of songs myself (albeit unsung) I've never understood (though it's true) how pain comes more vividly and easily than pleasure. The starving artist thing, perhaps.
But here's a cheerful one, for me, tonite - cause I've been blessed clean off my feet today. I sang for a jillion kids this morn on the radio out of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa.
i'm still suffering from the Pure Joy of it.

Hi All,
I'm a new member from downunder ... and I thought I'd post my two .... I can't split them ....
"Song for a winter's night" and "Daylight Katy".
They're closely followed by about another hundred odd masterpieces.

Intertesting comments about the writing of The Wreck. My brother was talking to one of his former band members a few weeks ago and this particular person told my bros that he considered GL almost a savant when it came to lyric writing -- apparently he could (can) write great lyrics unbelievably quickly ... I guess the comment about The Wreck (and Bitter Green too) would seem to support GL's great talent -- one that we have all come to know and love.

It's just another example of how Mr. Lightfoot can expand the bridge of generations.
It's a timeless hurt song one inwhich is no less heartfelt today as it was when it was written.

As predictable as it may be, my absolute favorite is "If You Could Read My Mind." That is the song that first got me interested in Lightfoot.
But, as almost everyone else has done in response to this topic, I will list a few more favorites, as it is too difficult to choose just one song.
The Mountains and Maryann - Perfect matching of lyrics and melody. Best song of the UA era.
Saturday Clothes - Lightfoot is the best writer of songs with major seventh chords, and this one illustrates that well.
Miguel - Love the ascending melody of the section that goes "To cross the border, to swim the river..."
Ordinary Man - Ah, but he's "NOT your ordinary man"(!) Great song.
Can't Depend on Love - This song is so good that I've never even tried to figure out what this song is about lyrically. The lyrics are imprinted on my brain from listening to it so much, but I don't necessarily need to know what it's about. If the song were about ringworm it would still be great.
Seven Island Suite - Lightfoot is also the master of writing songs in "sections" that can't always be categorized as verses, choruses, or bridges. After hearing this song, who needs songs with verses, choruses, and bridges?
Now and Then - "Once inside we found a curious moonbeam doing dances on the floor." Lines like that are enough to make aspiring songwriters go find real jobs. Why? Because they'll never write a line like that, and it's too depressing to keep trying.
She's Not the Same - "She lights the sun and conjures up the rain."
I think I'll leave it at that. Sorry if that's a bit too long.

Me, too, El Gato. That was my second Gord purchase -- Live in Reno, so many of his earlier songs I first heard there. I actually prefer them to his earlier renditions of them. The maturity brings an extra touch to them.

My current Lightfoot favorite is "The Watchman's Gone." A bittersweet 'observational' song with a sweet mix of hobo philosophy and just the right bluesy feel. I can't hear it enough lately, as well as the rest of the Sundown CD.

I'd have to say I have a few faves among his songs. I was introduced to GL in 1994 by a boyfriend of mine who played "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" for me. I felt such a connection w/the song and didn't know why till we were watching a documentary on the 20th anniversary of the sinking. Lo and behold, it turned out that it sank on November 10th---MY BIRTHDAY! Since then, I've loved that song. I also like "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Summertime Dream", "The House You Live In", "If You Could Read My Mind" and so many others...he just seems to speak directly to you!

No jiving around intended, but "Gordon u Rock" reminds me of a comment Gord used to make often in the 80's while introducing Sundown:

One song that seemed slightly neglected (as a favorite) and happens to be my personal favorite is Carefree Highway.
I might have a vague idea of what he was getting at with this song. Sometimes you're move somewhere alone with a certain plan in mind, you fall in love, and the original pla falls through. The only thing keeping you there is that special person. And then they leave, so you stick around for a couple years. And after those couple years you get to thinking about that person, and wondering what's become of them, and if they've moved on, and you realize that real comfort is out on the road, away from wherever you are.

Like most of us it's very hard to pick one "favorite" from amongst some 400 great songs - and usually depends on our own current place on life's path, and can change with new releases, new times, new moods.... But - to the point of this topic - my consistently favorite over the years has remained: "Fine As Fine Can Be".
The fabulous poetry, vivid imagery, and lovely love story feeling would make it a favorite anyway. But - it becomes tops when knowing it was written to and for his young daughter. Being the father of a daughter myself it touches and moves me everytime I play it. I was also privileged to see Gord perform it right after he first recorded and released it - at Sacramento's venerable old Memorial Auditorium on the Cold On the Shoulder Tour... It was also first time I had ever seen him play piano on stage. Wow!
That's as fine as fine gets...

Yeah, one of my favorites, too. I do wish he would add / play piano more often but understand the logistic difficulty in having a tuned piano available at a site where he's performing, much less hauling one around with him. But I do love the sound of a piano.

Well, I guess I need to have all his collection. Im a music lover too honestly the worst on me is I am only familiar with the song title not the artist too bad huh!but the song "If you could read my mind" it breaks the ice I really need to know who was the origianl artist it strikes me out. I love music so much my mom was a good musician back home in asia and I guess I got her passion in music.Sometimes I perform in gatherings but still have no guts to get into the big apple "do you know someone"? since you are "jill of all trade" ;)

Does anyone else really like "Baby, It's Alright" from IYCRMM. That's a hard one to get out of your head. I think Chris Isaac must have. Even though they are different song styles I always think of "Wicked game" when I hear "Baby, It's Alright"--anyone agree?

I was talking to my daddy about this just last night in our weekly phone call... He couldn't believe that I left off Protocol and Big Blue.. they are his favourites... I must admit.. Protocol is usually on repeat on my mp3 too.. that wonderful haunting melody... oh, and I think Baby Step Back would come close to 'pushing the rock and roll button' lol!
Ok, back to listening,
Be well

"The House You Live In" because it's beautiful and I never get tired of playing and singing it.
the pony man has always been one of my favorites. It's what got me started into listening to Gord. i also like bells of the evening, carefree highway, the ecmond fitzgerald, and softly.
