My favourite s are
The Last Time I Saw Her. and
I'm Not Supposed to Care.
Home From The Forest.
I love so many of Gordon's songs but these three always bring tears to my eyes.
He has a way of plucking at the heart strings.
I first saw Gordon Lightfoot when he hosted a series of TVshows here in the UK way back in 1963.
I have been a fan ever since.
Unfortunately he never tours here, so we feel a bit deprived.

Hello Katrine! I'm new here too (and also in the UK, so I can really, truly sympathise with you!) I've read about the 1963 TV shows, though I don't remember (I was just one year old at the time!) - though I did catch up as soon as I could! (around 1975!)
And my favourite song? Well, this is impossible, isn't it? I give up an give in (forever) .
But tonight (and only for tonight) I can only look at what I have on "repeat play" at the moment - "Much to my Surprise" (yes, much to my surprise). This song just makes me think of my closest friend and soul-mate. We two really are "two brave souls on a wild blue spree"! (though we will never pass each other by in the dark!)
And tomorrow I will (probably) have a different answer to this question! (yesterday my answer was different!)
Now I think of it all my favourite songs are linked with people I love or have loved. And this must say something about the power of this writing!

I've seen it said so many times that my mother's **parrot** is now trained to say, "You can't pick just one Gordon Lightfoot song. Brrr-AWK!"
"Carefree Highway" recently pulled me through a very difficult time, though I must point out that my up-and-down health has been back "down" today, and since my mother is not a fan (Shame on her!) I have difficulty listening when I want to. I'm staying in Mom's house until I get my own place in my hometown, and it's pretty much, "My house, my say" around here. Even when I use my headphones, she interrupts and *talks* all the way through it, and I can't listen. GRRRRR. I've told her what happened and the effect his music has on me, but all she cares about is what *she* likes.
Oops. Sorry about the tangent. I'm not feeling well, need GL's help and can't get it, maybe fellow fans can make a suggestion.
GL wrote "Fine as Fine Can Be" in honor of his daughter. My daughter's name is Elizabeth, and it so happened I heard FAFCB for the first time on my way home, while pasing through Elizabethtown, KY. So I felt a connection there too, and his performance of it left me absolutely saucer-eyed. I think maybe, if my mother lets me listen uninterrupted, I can use it as an affirmation, telling myself, "You're as fine as fine can be," i.e., "You're not sick, you're fine."
Then there's "Race Among the Ruins," which to me tells about picking up your life and going on after devastation.
Ironically from RATR: "Even though your mother is your maker, from her apron strings you pass." Ya hear that, Mom?
I apologize for the negativity. I promise I was only trying to answer a question.

For now, my newest favorite song is going to have to be "Welcome To Try". I really like the lyrics and the tune as well. It's about being strong. And it can mean several different things. Actually, DMD1(who just passed away 2 weeks ago)would sing that song because he's going to heaven and now he will never be lead astray again.

Hi Mair,
What brought Me to this site wAs to download some lyrics and chords to send to a new young singer/songwriter of great potential, namely Alistair Griffin who found many dedicated followers during the Fame Academy talent show. He struck me as having many of the qualities of Gordon Lightfoot.
His songs strike the heart strings.
Robin Gibb suported him all the way through and continues to do so.
I don't know if he is familliar with the huge volume of songs by our great Canadian legend, but I intent to make sure he discovers them.

Oh, please do, Katrine!
I supported (and voted for!) Alistair right from the start. Yes, I so agree with you - such a talent! And such an amazing songwriter!
I landed here unexpectedly too, about a week ago. Strangely enough, I was only searching for some historical information about the ship Yarmouth Castle for a friend I've been "working on" for a while and have been trying to "infect"! And here I am - I ended up here!

I listened to one of tapes before bed last night. Tape 3:"Your Love's Return" and everytime I hear that,it takes me back to all the girls/women I've loved. No wonder I like that song and chose it for the title! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/redface.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Whatever do you mean?
But ... I do love that song too - so romantic and in such an old fashioned way .. 3/4 time too, so uncommon (but not exclusive) these days! (even those days!) One I could listen to until the end of time!
And - in response to this thread - I haven't even started thinking about my favourite song yet!
I've had the "IYCRMM" album for quite awhile now, and I still haven't gotten into that song yet. You come on to some songs slower than you do others.

I found Alistair-Griffin.co.uk in early September. Over 5200 members already.
He would appreciate the songwriting skills of the legendery Gordon.

I swear, when and if I ever find the time,I'm going to put togehter a top 100 or even 200 best Gordon Lightfoot song list. They're all kind of "best" since were all sympatico here but the list would more than likely reflect what songs I would listen to first before others (a very narrow margin http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif ). Also, being in personal taste or preference.
"Pony Man" & "Your Love's Return", definetely top 10! Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Thank you Katrine! Just been there!
Yes, I'm always being amazed at how small the world is, especially these days! But you must have guessed that I (and anyone else here!) would love Alistair Griffin's music.
And, Borderstone - The Pony Man and Your Love's Return? No arguments here!!!

Probably would have been better to list any songs that are not favorites. That, my friends, would be a very short list. It would be impossible for me to have only one favorite GL song.

DMD3,when I say,"You don't know me very well,do you". That's a classic line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, meaning that the person he's talking to doesn't know what he's capable of.
In other words, you said I could never find that kind of time to make that list. The fact is I would need a good amount of time but I'm talking a day, maybe two. Not a week or a month! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif I'm very capable of that,in fact,if I hadn't had to work and have a social life (thank goodness I do!) I could've done my tapes in about 6 or 7 days. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
As for a list of non-fav's,I could make no such list anymore. I have some measure of "like" for each of his songs now. Well, been me,later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

I had every vinal album recorded and then replace everything with CD's. Now I've ripped every CD to MP3. GL's songs are perfect for long drives thru the night. Just crank it up and sing along. After all the years and miles, I could only get my list down to 6. Sorry!
1) If you could read my mind
2) Second cup of coffee
3) The house you live in
4) Rainy day people
5) A lesson in love
6) A painter passing thru
Sorry, but he's just go too many great songs.

My favourite Lightfoot song is "Beautiful"
because it's a timeless ballad and we listened to it numerous times on a mid 70's camping trip.

For me, its a toss up! I am a huge GL fan.
A huge music fan in general, and there are 2
GL songs that always strike up emotion in me.
"Minstrell of the dawn". What a beautiful
song. I wonder if he refers to himself
at times in this song. Secondly,
"Wherefore and the why". It is for
completely different reasons I love
this song. It could very well be the most
uplifting piece of music I have ever heard.
Love the website, thoughts and prayers
with Gordon.Peace.

Impossible to pick one, but one song that seems to get overlooked is Black Day in July. When you know what it's about I think it is really a great piece of songwriting

My favorite song is 'Romance' It reminds me of a time when I had given up on love. And then I found the most beautiful man that gave me the most beautiful life. My sweet husband made me believe in love. It always makes me cry. Gordon just seems to be able to say what people feel. I just love his songs. Linda

While in college in the late 70's, I heard "Spanish Moss" while flipping though radio stations late one night in my dorm room. Such a peaceful diversion from all the rock I was listening to. Bough "Summertime Dream" the next day and have been a GL fan since. Still ranks as one of my favorites.

Spanish Moss? Hmmm. I'd rank that song (for love songs) Just behind,"Nous Vivons Ensamble" and "Your Love's Return". I dislike that song now because it reminds me of what the girl I used to love felt when she started dating that Mexican boy. I think she stays to try and make me jealous, because they don't hug, they don't kiss, or have sex, or anything. I also heard he couldn't and wouldn't fight for nuttin', he only looks tough, so I don't have to worry if she decides to sick him on me.(She doesn't know he's a real mutt).

One of my favorite songs that Gordon Lightfoot recorded is "Pony Man." Here is why: For the past eight years I have hitchhiked all over the United States. Some nights, I would not get a ride and would find myself out in the middle of nowhere. So I would slip my headphones into my ears and turn on the beautiful music of Gordon Lightfoot. Then, I would hitch up my pack and start walking down the road...singing: "When it's midnight on the meadow and the cats are in the shed and the river tells a story at the window by my bed...if you listen very closely, be as quiet as you can...in the yard you'll hear him...it is the pony man."

There is no way one song for me...But there are a few that ALWAYS will strike a stronger cord in me... "Song for a Winters Night" simply for the imagery that it evokes and the powerful memories attached to it for me..."Early Mornin Rain" .. one of the first songs I'd heard and one of my favorite folk tunes..it didnt get any better then this!! "A Painter Passing Through " is another favorite for me, its just all that Gordon was and is in one incredible song... and "Shadows".. this song is the one that pops into my head first when posed with this question...its such a haunting song and incredibly moving to me..."Please kiss me gently darlin', while the river runs away, from the mountains in the springtime , on a blue and windy day..." One of my favorite Gordon lines...i can taste the air, feel the breeze and see a blue sky that almost hurts my eyes....UH!!!! i love that song!!!!

i have listened to GL for years. My dad got me into him and i think he is a great artist. The two best songs, i think, are The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Don Quixote.
Through the woodlands, through the vally, comes a horseman wild and free. Tilting at the windmills passin', who can the brave young horseman be?

I have probably 30 favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs, or more. "I heard you talking in your sleep" I love and is something else. "Tattoo" makes me misty, "Too Late For Prayin," "I'm Not Supposed To Care," "Spanish Moss" and "All the Lovely Ladies" does too. And, many, many others. It is nice to know so many people love and appreciate Gordon Lightfoot.

My wife and I have been Gordon Lightfoot fans since 1969. There's nothing he's written that I don't like/love. I've only seen him in concert twice. The first time was at the Constitution Hall in D.C. in the early 70's. We managed to make it backstage to meet him afterwards and tried to talk him into coming out for a drink with us. He was incredibly nice to our small group of college students, chatting with us for about five minutes. He seemed genuinely sorry that he couldn't come along, and said something like, "One of the things I don't like about having some measure of fame, is that I no longer have the freedom to do things I'd like to do with fans." I'll never forget that experience. The second time I saw him was more than a decade later at Wolf Trap in D.C. a huge, great concert, but there was no chance of getting anywhere near him afterwards.
I have one other anecdote about Gordon Lightfoot that sticks in my mind, and goes along with comments others have made about him not hiding his feelings. He was hosting a T.V. music show (I can't remember which one), and he was introducing the famous sitar player, Ravi Shankar. As I recall, GL said, "Here's someone's favorite musician, not mine!" I suspect he may have had a drink or so at the time, but I remember laughing very hard at the comment. Poor Ravi probably didn't find it as funny as I did.
In many ways, all GL songs are favorites, but here are some of my MOST favorite.
Beautiful - a fantastic love song
Fine as Fine Can Be - if you've got daughter's you'll understand
The Patriot's Dream - best antiwar song EVER. Every bit as meaningful now as it was when it helped open my eyes to the Vietnam war.
The Circle is Small / Dreamland - two sad but beautiful songs about betrayal, lost love.
The Canadian Railroad Trilogy - my vote for the best ballad and probably my all time GL favorite. The way the tempo mimics a trains building up speed is fantastic.
Song for a Winter's Night - incredible imagery.
Stone Cold Sober - hauntingly sad and very beautiful song

I can't pick one so I'll pick three
3 Sorry but Edmund Fitzgerald hit home since I grew up on one of the Great Lakes
2 If You Could Read My Mind, the straightforwardness of the story was aces.
1. Early Morning Rain..Great Guitar, great lyrics and hell Elvis covered it.

I don't kmow that I have any one favourite song. For me, when each new Gord album came out, several songs seemed to fit the life situation I was in in that time. There are many that always stand out in my mind, but if I return to the album they cam from, I find more that have special meaning. He is a painter - a painter of life. So, when I hear HARMONY, it evokes new meanings and associations.
Great topic, just too difficult for me. The man is, indeed, an artist. The tapestry he paints seems to be my soul...

Wild Strawberries from the Waiting for You
release. To me it captures everything about
Gord (and myself) at that point in his life.
A little humor, a nice tune and just a great
feel. WFY is often overlooked, but in my opinion
is the best of the "modern" Gord era!

Hi all,
This is a cool forum. My favorite Gord song (and among all of my favorite songs by everyone) is "All The Lovely Ladies".
The song continues to haunt me from the first time I heard it 'till even just now.
I can't put my finger on it, the words just somehow speak deep. This is true even though when I try to think about why I can relate to it, I can't rationalize it at all.
Blessings,
Eric

Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
Why? Because no other song in the world will give me goosebumps and send a shiver down my spine like this one does. Just the opening electric guitar notes is enough to do it. As a truck driver, I often travel Hwy 17 along the north shore of Lake Superior ( not too far from where she went down ). With Lightfoots imagery I can almost see the boat floundering and going down in a November storm.

The mental imagry evoked by The Canadian Railroad Trilogy are some of the most powerful I have ever experienced.
I had not heard any Gordon Lightfoot songs for many years until a few weeks ago. I left Canada nearly 20 years ago and now live in London England, and hearing this song gave me the worst case of homesickness I've had since I left!

This is easy. My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song is the very beautiful, "Beautiful". Why? Well it was the perfect song to remind me on my wife back in the days before we were married. It would literally bring a tear to my eye as I would listen to it, thinking of her, as my love for her grew.
And when we did get married, some 25 years ago, I had a very talented friend of ours perform "Beatutiful" as our final dance at the reception. He did the song justice.
To this day, I can't play through "Gord's Gold" without repeating "Beautiful" at least three times over.
Runners up are "Summer Side of Life" and "If You Could Read My Mind". But there are so many more great GL songs that I truly enjoy as well.
I pray for the day when Gord tours and comes to the NEw England area again. I'll be checking for tour dates.

"Circle of Steel" is a real bruiser. I first heard it after my mother bought Gord's Gold back in 76 (I was 10). I was familiar with all of his hits through the radio, but I was struck by the landscapes of all those numbers I hadn't heard before--especially Circle of Steel. It's a song that has stuck with me, even moreso when I finally became a father.
"Deck the Halls was the song they played in the flat next door where they shout all day."
"A child is born to a welfare case where the rats run around like they own the place."
"The sun hits the handle of her heirloom cup."
I will always be moved by this utterly relentless song. It is one of the most evocative things I have ever heard--a Dickensian gem.
I have to go hug my boy now.

The song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" has haunted me since childhood (it was played a lot on the radio at the time). I remember standing still in Woolworths when I was about 8 so I could listen to the whole thing. It is utterly beautiful. He conveys the lonely, cold peril of that night without reducing the lyrics to schmaltz (which a lesser wordsmith might so easily have done). I think any human being with a grain of empathy for their fellow man can't help but be moved by his eloquence.

I love almost all of his songs. But there are a couple that really speak to me for reasons I can't even explain. Minstrel of the Dawn is one. I think it's the musical genius that does it for me. Every time I hear that song I am amazed. The other song is Don Quiote. It speaks a different message to me each time I hear it. Most of his songs do that for me. No matter what year it is or what is going on in my life, the music, and especially the lyrics, seem to fit. They make me think. I usually end up finding solutions for my problems. I raised my daughter on GL. She spent every penny she had to buy the boxed set for me for my birthday. This will always be my treasured gift from her. Not so much because of the music, but for 20 years of her and I sharing a love of the same music. Not many mothers and daughters can say the same thing. That's what is special about Gordon Lightfoot.

They are all outstanding, but 3 really jump to the forefront of my Gordon Lightfoot psyche. Those three songs so deeply touch me, enthrall my emotional senses, reach down into my bare being and expose it only as Gordon Lightfoot's pure lyricistic magnificence can, that merely talking about these psychological works of art bring water to my eyes and force me to swallow.
The poetic masterpieces are, in random order, Sit Down Young Stranger, Someone To Believe In, and Summer Side of Life.
I was so touched and honoured at being able to actually share some of the feeling about those songs personally with Gord, and tell him of the barrels and barrels of tears I had shed while those songs bathed me in the fluidity of his masterful lyrics and crying guitar.
He sang those songs for me. He knew not who I was, he knew not the crushing pain I had lived and was living, yet somehow he knew to put those words to music and make them find me.
What's most important though, is now he knows, and forever we shall be be like some kind of long distance brothers, caring for and deeeply respecting one another's reason for being in this world, even though our eyes have never even met. they never have to.
Thank you Gord. Thank you for your music. But more importantly, thank you for letting me tell you how much it has done in keeping me alive so I could grow and watch my family grow too.
Love, your brother in spirit as only you and I can know, Mike

My favs have been, of course, The Wreck, the Pony Man, and If You Could Read My Mind. The wreck has the most mystical and ominous sounding music in it. As if the lyrics weren't descriptive enough, the "windy" noises created by Gordon really takes you to that November night. Jump ahead to 2004, I am a 37 year old first time mother of a 13 month old. My fav song to sing to her is Pony Man. She gets so still in my arms when I sing it and you can tell that the lyrics totally pacify her. She had a somewhat painful medical procedure at 8 months of age and the doctors told me to sing to her. When I started to sing the Pony Man, her wailing was reduced to little sobs, even at that young age. I had to bring in the lyrics for the staff at my daughters next visit!

I'm from england and the only times i've ever heard Gordie are on our 2/3 CDs (The combination of "early lightfoot" [which is actually lightfoot for anyone in canada or the USA] and "sunday concert", the other Album is The Way I feel)
So i haven't actually heard most of the songs you've talked about and although i have heard of "wreck of the edmund fitzgerald" i haven't heard it.
My favourite songs would have to be: Crossroads
Bitter Green
Steel Rail Blues
and The Canadian Railroad trilogy
(and maybe home from the forest)

My favorite song is Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I grew up on Lake Superior, and it is one of those stories we still all talk about, even to this very day. He captured the heartbreak and loss everyone suffered that fateful day. Thank you sir! My father knew some of those men. He said it was a fitting tribute.

I guess my favorite is a toss between Summer Side of Life & Early Morning Rain.
But the most haunting for me is Circle of Steel.
I come from a good family but I have a sister who is bi-polar and has a lot of trouble just living in the world. She is also a single mother and my heart bleeds for her and her children.
That song just haunts me because it describes her to a tee and makes me think of her situation. It just shows Gordon empathizes with people.

lyrically its brilliant... and, like many of his songs, i really identified with its theme.
on tattoo his baritone voice is an excellent marriage of masculinity and sesitivity...
to me, what lighfoot is ALL ABOUT.
and the harmonic flow of the descending guitar lines in the bridge/chorus is beautiful and classic.
it brings tears to my eyes, as many of his song can do...
"time has been wasting away... you know time doesnt wait for someone to find what theyre after"

Definitely Canadian Railroad Trilogy. It's such an incredibly magnificent chronicling of the development of the Canadian Railroad, and it elicits such emotion and paints such a clear picture of the scenes that must have existed during that time. The music in many places seems to replicate the accelerating movement of a train, and I just think it's a spectacular achievement. Many of his songs are prettier, but I don't think any is better.

At this moment, my favourite song is The Wreck of The Edmund FItzgerald. It is a wonderful sweeping tale of courage and loss. Mr Lightfoot's gift for melody shines in this song. He has captured the feel of the water and the swell of the waves. For me, the most powerful moment is this line; Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours. It speaks volumes. Another poetic twist, although this is a question, it is phrased as a statement. Again, it speaks volumes

I love the Wreck most of all, and any one of Gord's ship songs. ( I can't imagine the juxtaposition of hearing it in Woolworth's as a previous post says)
Then Seven Island Suite and Ghosts of Cape Horn and the Trilogy. A nod goes to Don't Beat Me Down as a favorite underrated song.
I go more for the upbeat ones than the slow romantic tunes and the big radio hits.
I love Whispers of the North as well and Boathouse. But I never tire of the Wreck, imagining those huge waves and that awful cold water.

There are just so many beautiful Lightfoot songs, which makes it such a great question to ponder. I especially enjoy "Wild Strawberries." The melody and lyrics are splendidly soothing. I can listen to Gordi for hours, and often times I do. He seems to have a song that suits any feeling a person may have.

My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song has changedin the last few months. Right now I am 16 and my dad would always play Gordon's Gold in the car, and I memorized all the lyrics to the songs. Between then and a few months ago, my favorite song was Circle of Steel, because of its vivid imagery, especially in the last verse. But, since I have fallen deeply in love with someone, softly is my new favorite song, and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is the runner up

As someone who has been religiously devoted to GL's music since my childhood in the early seventies, I own and listen to all Gord's studio albums. I would have to admit a three-way tie for favorite song.
"Affair On 8th Avenue" - This song sends chills up my spine. Not only is it hauntingly beautiful, but it reminds me of one my more intense relationships. I also think Gordon is telling us not to try so hard to control our affairs, but to accept them for what they are and when they pass, let the moment go and cherish it's memory.
How long, said she, can a moment like this
Belong to someone
What's wrong, what is right, when to live or to die
We must almost be born
So if you should ask me what secrets I hide
I'm only your lover, don't make me decide
"The Hosue You Live In" - There are two people on the planet who give truly sound ethical advice, The Dahli Lama and Gordon. This song teaches a balance between our needs as a human and our responsibility to others.
When you're out on the road and feelin' quite lost
Consider the burden of fame
And he who is wise will not criticize
When other men fail at the game
"Same OLd Loverman" -- I just love this slow, bluesy ballad. It reminds me of my truck-driving daddy.
Now, ask me tomorrow and I'll pick three different songs. I love the entire span of his career, from Lightfoot! to Harmony.

If You Could Read My Mind is my favorite Lightfoot song and song is probably my favorite song, period. I was 13 when it was a hit on the radio and from the first time I heard it, it has been the one song that I have never been tired of. It's the song that when it comes on the radio, you turn it up and tell everyone to be quiet for a minute. It makes you feel sad and good at the same time. It's just a beautiful piece of song craft and I know it has never gotten the acclaim that it deserves as a truly great song. Other GL songs that I love are Early Morning Rain, I'm Not Supposed to Care, Bitter Green, and The Circle is Small. And even though he didn't write it, his version of The First Time Ever I saw Your Face is absolutely incredible. I am glad I found this page and hope to visit it again soon.

One of Wayne Francis' album reviews has this:
"And then Early Morning Rain! What more can be said about this song that hasn't already been said? Covered by the likes of Dylan and Presley, it was written in 1964, but Lightfoot drew upon an experience some six years earlier when he was studying music in Los Angeles in 1958 and he found himself at LAX one early morning, more than a little homesick."
Also from Wayne Francis:
"I've recently come across a Lightfoot quote that clarifies a lingering
question on this group, that is, what inspired the idea for Early Morning
Rain.
Lightfoot attended Westlake College of Music in LA back in 1959 as a 20 year
old, and he has confessed to feeling homesick at times while out there. I can certainly relate. I travelled a couple thousand miles to university when I was 19 and I knew the feeling well.
Anyway, Lightfoot says there was a particular day when he was at the LA
airport in 1959, when he had those feelings of longing for home. The idea stuck and 5 or 6 years later he drew upon that day to begin writing Early Morning Rain.
Lightfoot's stay at Westlake proved invaluable to him in more ways than simply giving him the musical theory training he's put to such good use! So that dollar in his hand was a US dollar! Who would've guessed!?

"Promises". I think it's on the Shadows album. It's sweet and romantic, but realistic. It evokes memories of lost love without any bitterness. But really, the list of 'favorites' is quite long. Got on this site wondering what Gordon is up to now?

One of my friend's mom absolutely refuses to listen to Wreck. She heard it right after it hit the charts and it creeped her out, like she was having an anxiety attack, just thinking of what the men on the ship must have gone through that night.
She loves Lightfoot music, but she will not listen to Wreck.

Same with my wife. Gord is one of her favourite artists, but Wreck gets a skip as she refuses to listen to it.

I suppose my favorite is Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Both my wife and I really enjoy all of his music. We've done extensive traveling throughout the US as part of my work, and listening to his music has created some very special memories. We got see him in Phoenix, Az while we livng there in the mid 80's, and then again in the early 90's in Chicago. We hope this man sings on forever!

Oh, so many. GL has the capacity to condense the best and worst of what we are into a few verses and color them with music to lighten the soul. But I always have to listen intently to the backup singers on the "Summer Side of Life." There is a lady with a wide vibrato there who gives me shivers every time I hear that song. God bless the musicmakers.

I have been a fan of GL for many years. As for a Favorite song there are far to many to put down. But the ones that have left an impression would have to be 1. Black Day In July. Growing up in southwestern Ontario I remember only to well the riots in Detroit. 2. Go Go Round, only because it reminds me of a very special friend.
GL is more that just a song writer/singer, he is a story teller, and history teacher.
His songs and music will be remembered for many generations to come.

Haven't been in here for a while. It's just amazing that this topic is still kicking after almost 5 years! Says a lot about Gord's fans... I just took a driving trip to Wash DC and, naturally, had some GL CD's with me. Thought of a subset of my all time favorites - driving tunes....
Start with Early Morning Rain, move on to the Trilogy, throw in some Alberta Bound, Don Q and Patriot's Dream. Get out Old Dan's Records, Did She Mention My Name and Daylight Katy and Sundown. Add a little Christian Island and Rainbow Trout and the miles just melt by......

My favortie song by Mr. Lightfoot would definetly be narrowed down to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Not only does it hold some of the best lyrics ever recorded but the simple melody leaves me breathless everytime I hear it. And as a lifetime fan I invite you to come over on the east coast and let the people of nova scotia and people at the "Stan Rogers Folk Festival" hear and enjoy your music as much as I do!

Since the discussion requests only one song, I'll have to say "Ribbon Of Darkness". It was the first GL song I can remember hearing, recorded by both GL and Marty Robbins and it was the song that made me a GL fan at six years old.

I am pretty sure I have posted to this topic before but have no idea when so as it has resurfaced again I'll add my 5 cents worth and my personal favo(u)rite Lightfoot song.Unfortunately it is not a Lightfoot song per se but the fantastic Lightfoot rendition of the beautiful Ewan MacColl song
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".I can remember first hearing this on the Montreal FM radio station CJFM way back in 1966 and credit that recording with starting my long devotion to Gordon's music which was uiltimately responsible for saving my life some 34 years later when a fellow Lightfoot fan my dearest susan a.k.a. gordlover literaly saved my life in the chat room that I now so relentlessly advertise every Friday. I have just had a relook at page one of this topic and can thoroughly recommend the postings made on 14 april 2000 by "fezo" and a reply by Valerie Magee on the subject of the timing of the composition of "the wreck"

Cabaret
Miguel

The Way I Feel (first version)

In my case, my original post siting Go My Way as my favorite is still accurate, I just have to add Tattoo and I'll Tag Along as additional favorites. Apology - from the Sunday Concert LP. I saw GL for the first time in 1973 in southern Calif. I was hooked. I've been lucky enough to have seen him more than 40 times since. He changed my life and that song says it all. It has to be one of the most perfectly crafted songs of all time. It stills gives me goose bumps after all these years. It's too bad the entire world doesn't realize what a gift he is to us. Take some time and revisit his early stuff. NOBODY wrote songs as good as Lightfoot. I changed my career because of that first concert. I took my guitar playing seriously and turned professional 5 years later.

My favorite GL songs change from time to time. Right now 'Tattoo' and 'Spanish Moss' followed closely by 'River of Light'. There is no doubt that he is a master songsmith. Not only can he compose wonderful songs but taking a good look at his cataloguen reflects that he is also a very productive composer. He has said that part of his productivity is the result of feeling responsible for the financial well-being of his band.
P.S. Does anyone but me have a naughty idea of what 'Spanish Moss' really is?
well i have to say my favruite Gordan Lightfoot song is IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND and ON A WINTERS NIGHT! when i hear these songs it makes me forget about everthing!
