I've enjoyed Lightfoot since first hearing him in the early seventies. I learned to play guitar from his records and even corresponded with his (first)lead guitar player Red Shea while I was
in college. I saw Gord at the Universal City Ampitheater in '73, the Hollywood Bowl in '74 and met him backstage in San Diego in 1975. My wife daughter and I also saw him just a few months ago in Denver. He sounds as good as ever and really seems to be enjoying himself at the spry age of 61. There's no finer songwriter in my opinion. Thanks for the great website! Bob Graham

Can anyone please tell me which CD of
Gordon's may contain the song "The Auctioneer"?
I've looked through them at CD Now, but I can
not find it. This was a special song of an Uncle
that passed away about 10 months ago. His wife
is attempting to find the song. Any help would be
appreciated! Thank You!

About all I can say is that Mr. Lightfoot, Sir, you have feeling. I just discovered your music a couple weeks ago, and I must say that I cant keep myself from whistling, humming, or singing it all day. I'm 27, and was always into punk music, and it has feeling too, but its more anger than anything. Yours is music for life, love, death, and for the music it self. I don't know if it means much to you, or if you will even read this, but thank you. You have given me a new taste for life, and have made this part of the year (hard days for orphans,) bearable. thank you again. P.S. did she go your way?

hi my name is Rhianna Barr and i am 19 years old.
I may be a little young to be listening to Gordon's music,
by i think his songs are far better quality and talneted than
something Miss Spears would sing. i have alot of his records, and
the Gord's Greatest cd from '75. My favorite songs are -Does your mother know,-
The first time i saw her- Rich man's Spiritual- You just gotta be- I'll tag along-
Canadian Railroad Trilogy-Satuday Clothes,- and "If you could read my mind"
just to name a few. i think people my age should listen to Gord's music if they ever get
bored of Boy bands and B. spears.
keep up the good work Gordon!

Some Texans like Lightfoot too!!! I've seen him in concert 5 times - once in Anchorage, twice in Ft. Worth, and twice here in The Woodlands (Houston). It's a crying shame that Canadian music doesn't do well here in the states, but those of us in the know, know what others are missing.

His nautical songs will always hold a special place in my life..."Come all you rustic old sea dogs who follow the bright Southern Cross"- 'rounded the Horn in '85 and I swear I could feel their presence. Thanks, Gord- "you ain't been done in yet"!

I have been a fan of Gordy's since I was wee little, my mother having gone to school with him in Tweed, Ontario. She told me of how she used to date his close friend and how they would double date and Gordon would sing at all the school assembly functions. From the start, I was enchanted by the music and his voice, which possesses the ability to take the listener away. He truely tells a story with his songs and I will always love his music for that.
He's one of the best!

Its been nearly 40 years since I last talked with Gord. We met when he was singing at a coffee house on McNab street in Hamilton Ont. The band I was playing drums in, "Nicky Moore & The Sceptres" was working across the street at the Flamingo Bar. Gord also guest shot with our band on our TV show "Club Eleven Dance Party" on channel 11 Hamilton. It was pretty obvious then that he was a very special talent, and I continue to listen to his work...keep on truckin...regards from North Carolina

Hi Gordon, from a very wet and stormy England. I have enjoyed your work since seeing you play in a cafe-bar in Toronto in 1967. I was taking a 'gap year' and worked for the Hudson Bay Company. Talking of which, why don't you write a new song and bring it into the lyrics it must be one of Canada's great peices of folk history and highly evocative. It should have a super potential for your wonderful imagary?
Please don't forget your British followers, it would be great to have a few concerts from you over here again soon.
Kind regards,

I first got turned on to Gordon Lightfoot when I was in Basic Training (Air Force) back in the 1980's. I was a 20 y.o. female from Brooklyn NY and had never heard anything like that.(It totally blew my mind). Over the years his music has been such a comfort to me. Though I have never experienced nature and the freedom that Gordon sings about, I feel the music in my soul and feel as though I am with him.
Peace to all!

I remember the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. The storm was truly terrible and the TV 6 news flash that evening stating that all contact was lost with the mighty vessel. I shivered with the cold. The first time I heard the "Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald", I cried. I still do, especially in Novembers here on the shores of the Mighty Lake Superior. Thank you for immortalizing all of the brave sailors who died that night. There is no greater tribute.
I saw Gordon in concert over 15 years ago in Indiana. It would be so wonderful to see him again in concert, but here in Houghton, MI, not far from that Superior Lake.

Originating from Michigan's upper peninsula, I've always related to Gordon Lightfoot's lyrics, especially when living overseas. Songs about the Great Lakes are rare, and songs that move our souls are invaluable. For 30 years, I've loved no other songs as these; every time I sit down with my guitar or listen to a cassette or CD, I want to say thank you. Our hearts have been filled for many years...and we hope many years more. After the privilege of seeing Gordon Lightfoot in concert three times, I can only hope for another opportunity from Wisconsin. Also, the upcoming television performance will be a treasure. Thank you just isn't enough.

Recently went to the Bob Dylan concert in Toronto
Got totally freaked when my gal friend nudged me
and pointed out 'Gordon Lightfoot'"himself"...
sitting in the row behind us and a few seats down.
Between sets, some shirted type guy, called him
out and we watched him walk back stage, probably
because they are friends. ...Well....halftime being over here he comes back to his seat. He had
made it clear that he was there to enjoy the concert not to sign autographs and shake paws..but
..I had to take a shot..stuck out my hand and pleaded..."Mr. Lightfoot". ...He shuffled down the row with his back to me...(I was just happy to
see him, and woulden't have thought anything if he
chose to ignore me)......He stopped,... lightly pivoted towards me, took a step back.. grabbed
my awe struck appendage and smiled right into my face. one stoned groove
A small thing for some but Gordon was always a
great inspiration for me. Wish I could send him
some of my songs. Wish I could send him some of my
killer dute. Wish I could just say.. thanks Gord.

I, like many others grew up with the sound of Gordon Lightfoot. I couldn't wait for the next album to be released so I could add it to my collection. I also purchased every song book that was publishhed, one for each of the albums, Gord I hope that you read this. You are much loved and revered by your fans as you can see by the long list of entrys into this site. I loved yor music so much that I played it all the time. I got lost in it and so absorbed in your lyrics and chords oh those unmistakable chords. I play music for a living and you being the wonderful guitar picker that you are would appreciate good guitars when you see one. I bought a brand new d-18 martin like the one you are using im many pictures I have of you and also a j-200 Gibson. Have you ever used one of these. It has a deep resonant base and warm treble sound. I learned to play the finger style for folk music and combining that with the tremendous chord arrangments just blow you away. The first time I played in public was at a coffee house back around 1970 and I was scared to death at performing in public. I had to choose a song that I hoped would grab the attention of the audience as I am not much of a writer. When the houlse lights went down and the curtain rolled back, there I was in front of a large audience and I wanted to be anywhere but there. I started the finger style intro to "Steel Rail Blues" and when I saw toes tapping and people kinda moving with the rythme I knew It would be ok. I have played many of your songs and I hope that you dont mind. I appreciate the fact that you shared them with us. I will be down in your area in the summer of 2001 and hope to get a chance to see you if you would like to meet an old guitar picker fan of yours. All best to you Gord and thanks from the bottom of my heart for all those beautiful songs. Your voice and lyrics have been my musical inspiration. Cliff Redden

Lightfoot is one of the most "irreplaceable" artists in Canadian Music. I think his story songs, such as Edmund Fitzgerald, and Canadian Railroad Trilogy are the best in his repetoire, making him a more "educated" songwriter than anyone else in pop music today.
As a longtime Lightfoot fan I feel that he should get back with (sorry CLEMENTine I guess you became a fan too late in his career) Red Shea and John Stockfish. Those two musicians were the BEST he has had in his career, and when they left him, he unfortunately faded into a downhill swirl. He needs Red, and John to make himself successful, and if they are not likely to come back, than well sorry fans, he may not have another top 40 hit or another Juno.
This site is pretty cool, keep up the good work CHAR!!! and Gord if you are reading this, get Red and John back into your band, get a haircut, lose the 'stache, and go electric!!! I would love to see you go electric.

I have been a devoted fan of Gordon Lightfoot for years. His music and lyrics have been a constant inspiration. Much of my own songwriting owes much to his style and persona. His songs have been with me as: friend, comforter, teacher, healer. My current obsession is his song "Restless" which I seem to be singing and playing almost daily now. What more can I say, he's a modern day hero. He has touch my life.

I just finished watching"Gordon Lightfoot, Live" and am reminded of what an incredible singer and songwriter Lightfoot is. It's so impressive to hear someone sound so much like his recordings in an age when most artists need 3 or 4 back-up singers to "carry" them through a live performance. I've been a fan for years and will certainly continue to be in the future. I wonder when he'll be back in Saskatchewan performing.

Gordon autographed my ticket stub after a show in Latham, NY in 1987. Naturally, it has a place of honor in my home. He was kind enough to come out and chat with those of us to remained long after his show.
For me, Lightfoot is one of the all-time greats.

Back in the early 60's a young guy clutching a 45rpm record in his hand knocked on the"showroom" street window of CKEY Radio on Davenport Road in Toronto. It was early evening and I let him in. He said he was playing at the Village Corner down the street and had just picked up a copy of his first release and would I give it a listen. I did and was blown away. Breaking the rules I played it on the air right away then gave it to Eddie Houston , the Music Director, the next day. He charted it on the "Silver Dollar Survey" that week. Please tell me I was the first to play on the air the first Gord Lightfoot Record. You were, are and will continue to be an awesome talent and an endless source of some of the world's greatest music.

Have loved Gordon's music since the 60's. Saw him in concert many times in London (Royal Albert Hall). Took my kid brother to see him when he was 12-ish ... who is now 35 (and still loves Gord's music!). Would love to see him in concert in England again sometime soon!!! Let me know if this is ever arranged! Haven't seen him live for many many years (probably 20!).
Most of my friends are nostalgic about the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc, etc ... but at that time my great heros were Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, etc, etc. Still sounds like magic!

OK, among many of the artists I have in my collection, Gord would have to be my favorite. I have all the albums available on CD and Gord's Gold on LP which was my mom's. I really think Gord's music in incredible. I'm only 22 and listen to at least one of his CD's a week. I love his music, his voice and just the wonderful songs he has written, and me being a guitar player I love playing his music as well. The other important artists i have an abundance of is Billy Joel and Neil Diamond. But, Gord has always been my fav. I just hope to see Gord in concert someday, but he only comes to the Philadelphia area sometimes. Ah well i guess i'll continue to watch Gord as "a passing ship" until then.

What caught my imagination years ago was the Canadian Railroad Trilogy. The epic put to music by someone who could sing and write moved me. My family were Canadian before the Crown came and I just found the story riveting. The music of the simple ballads like Alberta Bound and Love songs like If You Could Read My Mind, touch my heart. And of course the retelling of the Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald still gets to me. Gordy is a moving songwriter and storyteller.

Hi! I too am so thrilled that Gordon Lightfoot is still out there doing concerts! I am from Duluth, MN, originally, and love to hear that Canadian accent!! He is going to be in concert in Duluth I think as part of a 25 year tribute to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in November! Would SO LOVE to see that, but...BRRR! We live in sunny Florida now. I really AM hoping my husband will take me there, though, because we got married there 25 years ago, not many days after that boat went down, so that song always takes us home. Then we saw Gordon in concert there in Spring of 1978 and sure loved the song, "The Circle is Small", ya sure never hear that one much any more!

I guess from reading some of the entries here, I'm one of the
"babies" here, at only 22 years old!. Although my favourite band is
Led Zeppelin, there's nothing more relaxing than putting on one of GL's
albums after a long day at uni. I got into him at the very end of 1997,
when during a hot night at 4:00am, I decided to put the radio on and flick
through some AM stations cause I couldn't sleep. A catchy song (Sundown)
came on, and I made a note of it. While doing the same thing a week later,
another catchy song came on (IYCRMM). I thought, hang on, haven't I
heard this name before. Then I thought, he can't have every song like this.
Then I found summertime dream at a record fair for 50 cents. Bought it
and heard more of the same. This was a year later!. So, throughout last
year, I started collecting all his albums, and found that all his songs
are similar - "simple, catchy tunes". My favourite album is actually DSR,
with EW second. I like that DQ to Salute region the most. APPT has a special
meaning cause I bought that a day before my grandfather died, so all the
songs on that remind me of him and a girl that I was getting to know really
well. However, we lost contact as she has gone interstate. So, this
situation, my grandfather's death, and finishing the undergraduate
part of my course all comes back as happy/sad combo when I listen to APPT.
Favourite songs @ the moment are farewell anabel, auctioneer, long thin
dawn, odr, uncle toad said, endless wire, heaven help the devil, salute,
dream street rose and wherefor and why.
Most of the songs bring back some special memory. I know it's weird for a
22 year old to be listening to both led zeppelin and gordon within the space
of a couple hours, but it does happen!
Anyone else around here in their early 20's?????
Better stop rambling,
Mende

I HAVE BEEN A GL FAN SINCE THE EARLY 60'S. I HAVE A SISTER 9 YEARS OLDER WHO LISTENED TO HIS
MUSIC ALONG WITH IAN AND SILVIA, PETER PAUL AND
MARY, ETC. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING GORDON IN CONCERT A COUPLE DOZEN TIMES AND WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE MY PICTURE TAKEN WITH HIM BACK STAGE IN DALLAS, TX IN 1976, WITH AN AUTOGRAPH. I JUST SAW HIM AGAIN ON AUGUST 25TH HERE IN DENVER CO AND IT WAS LIKE VISITING WITH AN OLD FRIEND. I DID NOT STAY AROUND AND WAIT FOR HIM TO EMERGE FROM BACKSTAGE AS I AM RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AND WAS NOT FEELING TOO WELL, BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE MISSED THE CONCERT EVEN IF I WAS ONE DAY POST OP. WHEN I MET HIM HE WAS PRETTY DRUNK BUT HE WAS SO NICE TO ME. I VISITED WITH HIM FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES AND I FELL IN LOVE. IT IS A MEMORY I WILL CHERISH FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I ONLY HOPE THE CONCERT THIS YEAR IS NOT THE LAST TIME I SEE HIM LIVE. I AM GLAD GORDON IF YOU ARE READING THIS THAT YOU ARE CLEAN AND SOBER AND ENJOYING YOUR LIFE. I WORRIED FOR YEARS ABOUT YOUR DRINKING AND HOPED YOU WOULD SEE THE LIGHT AND GIVE IT UP. I AM PROUD OF YOU AND HOPE YOU HAVE MANY MORE HAPPY YEARS. THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AND THE MEMORIES AND FOR THE PRICELESS KODAK MOMENT BACKSTAGE. I LOVE YOU.

Your website is extremely professional and comprehensive and you are to be credited for all the work you have done in maintaining this. The first Lightfoot song I ever heard was "The Minstrel of the Dawn" back in 1970 and it struck me as, to paraphrase something Salieri says in "Amadeus", as the music of Paradise. All these years later, I can still go back and recollect "the wonder of that night" when I first heard Lightfoot. I also feel, as another contributer stated in your guestbook, that the music of Gordon Lightfoot has been a backdrop to my life, and probably to the lives of a great deal of other people.

When i was a young teenager back in the 1970s i used to go with my uncle down to the corner pub in Dietrich, Idaho. He gave me a few quarters to keep me quiet, and over and over again i played "Carefree Highway" on the jukebox. Since then he's been my favorite artist...i feel sort of like i've grown older with him.
Thanks for the website...didn't realize there were so many other GL fans out there. I especially didn't think there were any female fans...seems like my love for his music has probably chased away more than a couple of would-be girlfriends!!

The first album I ever bought was one of Gordon
Lightfoot's, I lived in Finland Minnesota when the
Edmund Fitzgerald went down, I was amazed at how
GL's song about the Fitgerald affected me when I
first heard it. My children knew all the words of
Gordon's songs and could sing them better than Sesame
Street songs. My husband and I had tickets to Gordon's
concert in Casper Wyoming, but Tex died before the
the concert, I went alone and felt at peace then, it
was something we had planned for a long time and I
went with my husband in my heart. GL's songs were
played at the funeral, it seems my life has always
had Gordon in it and I gladly will keep it that way.
I missed the concerts in Colorado where I now live
so I guess I will be travelling at least once this
year to another state. It will be the first time
to see him in concert since Casper, it will be a
wonderful reunion for me. I hope he never tires
of entertaining us, his fans.

Last night after the concert in Denver, for the second time,I got to shake Gord's hand. More about this later.I first saw Gord in concert in 1967 at EXPO 67,the World's Fair in Montreal, Canada, when I was just 13 years old. After moving to the States in 1970 I was lucky enough to see him in concert two times in San Diego, two times in Los Angeles, two times in Phoenix and one time in Fort Worth. It was at the 1987 Fort Worth concert at Billy Bob's Texas that through sheer luck I managed to get a back stage pass [which I still have] from Pee Wee Charles. My wife Cindy and I and Cindy's Mom were having dinner before the concert at a restaurant close to Billy Bob's and I kept noticing a familiar face at the table next to us.I finally asked the guy "Do we know each other" and he said he was with Gordon Lightfoot's band. I said "You are the steel guitar player,Pee Wee Charles. We're here to see the concert tonight."We talked for a while and then he asked me if I would like to meet Gordon. Of course I said "Yes" and he gave me the pass. That concert was memorable to me because I remember Gord playing a few songs solo without the band.I had never seen this before. After the concert we had a hard time getting back stage because even though we had the pass, our name wasn't on "The List" We finally got back stage and talked with all the members of the band and got them to autograph one of our ticket stubs.[All except Rick Haynes the bass player] Finally I got to meet Gord ,shake his hand, talk for a few minutes and also get his autograph on the ticket stub. Cindy's Mom had brought a small camera along and she took a picture of Gord and I standing side by side.I also had the audacity to give Gord a copy of a song that I had written called "Ten Degrees and Getting Colder-Sequel 21 Years Later" I had frantically written down the words on a bar napkin during the intermission. Thinking back on that moment I know that I deserved the blank stare that he gave me. That's the first time I got to meet Gord in person. The next 13 years I was real busy in Colodado Springs starting our own business and helping to raise Our twin boys, born in 1990. During those years I always kept up with Gord's new music and realized how much I missed seeing him in concert. I finally got hooked up to the internet in January of 2000 and the first thing I did was to see if there were any Lightfoot websites. I was astounded to find this incredible website and especially happy to find a list of tour dates. As soon as I heard about the PBS taping of the April 19,2000 concert in Reno, I called to see if any tickets were still available. I was lucky to get 2 tickets in the last row of the upper balcony. We flew to Reno a couple of days early because I had heard that they would be doing sound c****s and rehearsals the 2 nights before the concert. To make a long story even longer, we were escorted out of the theatre several times in the days before the concert and couldn't find a way to get back stage passes. The concert was incredible and I came home and wrote about it on this same web page around April 26[see archives if you are interested] Now about last night and the second time that I got to meet Gord. Cindy and I drove up to Denver and c****ed into a hotel about a block away from the Paramount Theatre. We walked over to the theatre around 3:00 pm to see if we could find a way to get back stage passes for after the concert. We had no luck so we had a bight to eat at the Paramount Cafe and shopped along the 16th street mall and did some serious people watching.[We don't get out in the big city too often, by choice, not by lack of opportunity] Around 7:30pm we headed to the theatre and witnessed a great show. Gord was possitively chatty compared to most of his shows. He talked about how much he likes to tour and "how he was going to tour until the touring ends and then do the big tour in the sky" and how he had had only 3 days to write the Canadian Railroad Trilogy for a TV special back in 1967 and something about papier mache rails and sledge hammers and how he had borrowed the format for CRT from the Civil War Trilogy written by someone who had become his friend but was now passed away. We were in row Z, only 26 rows back but we found the volume during the first set to be too low. The sound guys must have made some adjustments during intermission because the sound levels during the second half were much better. One particular moment of the concert gave me goosebumps and that was towards the end of CRT. It's hard to explain but the volume went up, he slowed the tempo down and he intensified the words and the feelings in the song. When the song was done the crowd went wild with applause and most of us jumped to our feet and yelled. Anyways, at the end of the concert Gord made reference to it being "a hot Friday night" and "wanting to get out of here" He only did one encore [Old Dan's Records] and then came back on stage and bowed to the audience several times and left. Well, when we had gone into the concert hall it was indeed a hot and dry Friday night but when we walked around to the back stage door of the hall it was sprinkling rain and breazy. Cindy was wearing heels, a cotton skirt and a tank top and stood shivering as we waited with about 40 other people for the band and Gordon to come out. As The rain intensified I felt like a real heel. Just as we were starting to go back to the hotel after waiting about 40 minutes,Barry the drummer came out trying to go incognito but some of us recognized him and asked him to talk a while, pose for pictures and sign autographs. It amazes me how incredibly friendly and cordial every single person connected with Gordon's concerts are. Every member of the band ,his personal pilot,Joe, his equipment driver,Bill and especially Gord himself. After we talked with Barry and Bill we noticed that Domino's was delivering pizza backstage so we figured that it was going to be a while before the rest of the band was going to come out so we went back to the hotel, got Cindy into some dry and warm clothes, grabbed the umbrella from the car and headed back to the stage door. As we got close we could see camera flashes going off and the small crowd of people gathered around Gordon.Imagine if you will, 11:30 at night with the rain pouring down and there's Gord with his leather jacket on standing there signing autographs, shaking hands, talking with his fans and posing for pictures. The first thing that I thought was OMYGOD he's going to get a chill and catch a cold and miss some concert dates. I grabbed our umbrella and held it over him and the people he was talking to [much to the relief of one of the guys who was trying to get Gord into a car driven by Rick Haynes the bass player] Since I was holding the umbrella I got the chance to talk with Gord and get his autograph on the picture of he and I from Billy Bob's from the backstage visit in 1987. At that point the guy who was trying to get Gord into the car became adamant with the fans that Gord had to leave and steered Gord to the waiting car. Gord got into the car and I thought that was that.A few minutes later as Cindy and I were walking past the car, Gord rolled down the window and I asked him if he would sign a picture of me standing under the marquis sign with his name on it from the Reno PBS special concert. His eyes lit up and he said"We got to keep every song from that show for the TV special" and he gladly signed my picture.
Well that's the story of the second time I got to meet Gordon Lightfoot. Let me just say that I'm a very mellow guy and I'm not a fanatic about anything. But after meeting Gord the first time I always knew that I would get to meet him again. There was no doubt in my mind. He has been a major part of my musical life and has had a major impact on my personal life since the mid 60's. Hopefully a few of you out there will understand why I would go through all this.I understand and accept it and thank God my "Beautiful" wife Cindy understands....
PS. I finally got Rick Haynes' autograph on the concert ticket stub from the Billy Bob's concert in 1987.

I've only been on the Web for a few weeks but have been impressed with the way people can connect. A site like this only reinforces the warm, familiar emotions associated with Lightfoot. My compliments to all the contributors (even the cranky ones who force us out of our complacency and allow us to think a little harder on why we feel so strongly about the music).
I've been aware of Lightfoot almost as long as my awareness of recorded music. Dad had three collections from the United Artists years on 8-track (that should date me nicely!) and I proceeded to wear them all out. I moved on to Lightfoot's then current tapes of "Don Quixote" and "Old Dan's Records", back when Canadian radio featured singles like "Beautiful" and "You Are What I Am".
Picking a favourite Lightfoot song is like picking a favourite piece of clothing: some days you go for the corduroys that make you feel warm and other days the dress shirt that makes you look good... and some days you just feel like wearing your Saturday clothes.
I would struggle to pick a single fave song from each of his albums but Lightfoot's oddball experiments probably dominate my current top ten: the passionate & pointed "Circle Is Small"; the rhythmic "Me & Bobby McGee"; the hoot of "Alberta Bound"; the dramatic "Farewell to Annabelle"; the spacey "Seven Island Suite"; the sexy "Slide On Over"; the cryptic "Too Many Clues"; the funny "Boss Man" (with the "Pet Sounds" backing); the tragic "Talking In Your Sleep" and the narrative "Ballad of Yarmouth Castle".
No one describes being alive better than Gordon Lightfoot.
Thank you for allowing me to share this fine space!

Whenever I feel lost, I put on some Gordon Lightfoot, and I feel at home, at peace, atleast in my heart for a time. Finding this site has been fun, discovering I'm not the only person who can't ever live without Gordon in my life! I've seen Gordon at Northrup Auditorium in St. Paul several times and low and behold, once I know of he came to Boise and I traveled many hours to see him. A few years after that concert and not having a chance to see him as I lived in remote central Idaho (the place that's burning up now) I wrote to him and invited him to come visit me at my little mountain cabin...we could sit around a quiet campfire, play music or just listen to the crackling fire and watch the sparks rise into black night sky. I told him I didn't think anyone in Dixie, Idaho knew who he was, so he could have a nice break from the public, just relax and I'd show him all around the mountains. Well, he never wrote back or showed up, ****! Guess he was too busy. I still live in the mountains of Idaho, but I sure miss Lake Superior and the little log cabin I once lived in on the Echo Trail outside of Ely where I would listen to Gordon, the loons and the wolves. I haven't thought of these things for so long...I didn't think anyone would understand how Gordon has touched my life...but from what I read here, you all have been touched by this gifted man.

Wondering if anyone has heard the remake of "Sundown" that has the chorus done in a rap fashion?
I heard it in the Kenneth Cole store on Michigan Ave., Chicago while shopping there last week. Would like to know who the artist is that has redone the song in this style.

Well, Jeff all I can say is that it has been wa-a-a-y too long since I pulled my first G.L. album from it's slip cover and sat in the dark and cried to 'I heard you talking in your sleep'...tomorrow I'm going to buy the CD. You have put a lot of work into this site...nice job. Listening to the midis took me back to my first apartment in 1970-71 on the water front of Lake Michigan in a small town a couple of hours north of Milwaukee. I saw many ships like the E. Fitzgerald that struggled to reach port on cold winter nights when the wind chill was 40 below with winds that were treacherous. Just about the time you'd hear its horn alerting the bridge tender to raise the bride you'd see the ship. The ship would make its way into port and if it was near the Holidays you'd see a few strings of Xmas lights hanging off of the smokestacks (and hanging on by a thread!) in a tree shape that someone had strung as a reminder of home. Quite a site to see at 2:00 am on a Sunday morning with frost on the window pane and icicles hanging off the ship's bow three feet thick and hanging down 15 more. Those were the days, my friend...jfm

Firstly, this is a great site. It's really FANTASTIC to read the comments of others who have not only enjoyed GL's music for years, but are deeply moved and inspired by his amazing songwriting / singing talent. I could listen to Gord tunes day in, day out, without the music growing stale. It amazes me, because I cannot say that of any other artists, even those I appreciate and enjoy. I'm almost 35 now, and have been listening to Gord since I was about 10. My brother was getting into album collecting in the '70's and purchased Summertime Dream. We were hooked, even my Dad who was blessed with a fantastic opera-quality tenor and thought modern day singers were blasphemous! Anyway, in more recent years ('93), I was privileged to see Gord at the Nat'l Arts Centre in Ottawa with my husband -- front row, center (right in front of Gord's knees!) Got to give him a high five -- high moment and great memory for me! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET "SALUTE"? I'm missing it from my collection and would really be excited to obtain it. If you know, please email me. Well, y'all, I look forward to c****ing back to this site and reading all your wonderful comments about our much-loved GL. Bye for now!
PS: has anyone c****ed out music by James Keelaghan? He's very good, and if you like Gord's stuff, I think you should c**** out some James. He's folksy and has great songwriting talent and a smooth voice (oh, and he's Canadian, too!) An older-time artist to c**** out would be Stan Rogers. He died in a plane crash, but left behind some good music to enjoy. (gee, another Canadian...hmmm...) Let me know what you think!
Best to all,
M.

Have been blessed to see him twice, once ['74]in a large venue in Honolulu, shortly after seeing Joni Mitchell and the Braker Bros. band. Next time ['85]in a very small setting in Dallas. Still listen and am inspired especially by the Pony Man which can "take me away".

We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Gordon Lightfoot concert at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas. I have seen Gordon Lightfoot once years earlier when he played in Wichita, KS. What a performer! It was in the early 70's several years before the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. My ALL TIME FAVORITE has to be that one. I can still remember where I was the first time I heard it....on the way home from wheat harvesting in North Dakota. It had such an endearing melody...almost like the ship was calling out to you sometimes. I've been a fan since the early 70's....Can't wait to see him again next week. Peggy H.

For my birthday this year my youngest son's present was a date to see Gordon Lightfoot performing live at Wolftrap in Vienna, VA. This would be a first for me and it was one of the greatest presents I've ever received. I stumbled on this man's music, by accident, 30 years ago. I saw his name on an album, didn't have a clue who he was and bought the album because I liked his name! For the next 30 years I've collected and listened to...over and over...the works of this very gifted balladeer. Now I've also seen him perform. I still haven't come back down to earth. His onstage style is so quiet and unassuming that you get to experience his incredible musical storytelling talent without the distractions of a lot of chatter and glitz. I am truly awed.
And as for this site...lots of class!

I have enjoyed Lightfoot's music for a long time. It was of interest to me to read what my favorite artist (Bob Dylan) had to say about him:
"Some guys got it down-Leonard Cohen, Paul Brady, Lou Reed, secret heros-John Prine, David Allen Coe, Tom Waits, I listenmore to that kind
of stuff than whatever is popular at the moment, they're not just witchdoctoring up the planet, they don't set up barriers...Gordon Light-
foot, every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever."
That's pretty high praise of one great artist from another great artist.

and so glad to get to go. this man LOVES what he does...it
is so obvious...even from the nosebleed seats! i can't imagine
playing the same songs for years and years, and still having
a good time doing it! i love minstrel of the dawn...it was
my favorite song then, and it still is now. i was tickled
that he sang it...thanks for making the request (this to the
man in north carolina? who was going to see the concert in new

before the concert in new york. it was a mind blowing, awesome,
fabulous, wonderful, lifetime gift. thank you so much.

I was a fan of GL before I'd ever heard of him. PP&M sang Early Morning Rain and That's What You Get For Loving Me on an album back in about '68. In 1970 I was struggling through university and working in an all night hamburger shop (pre McDonald's) when the radio played IYCRMM. I was hooked. The only album I could get at the time was Summer Side of Life -it started my collection. I recently finally tracked down a copy of PPT - You wouldn't believe how hard it was to get a copy in Australia. I saw GL in concert in Melbourne in May 1974. Unfortunately he hasn't been back since. You people in Nth America are certainly lucky to be able to get to live performances.

Gordon Lightfoot's music was created for listening to on a porch in the summer evenings. Or drinking beers on a snowy night.
My friends and I are 25. We listen to rock, rap, the dead, folk, and Gordon Lightfoot. I found his summertime dream in my Dads records and the rest is history. I now have about 10 albums.
