Yes i read this in yesterday's STAR. the kids I care for will sit quietly and watch his show as did my own children. I have some of his speicals on video that i recorded whwn they were broadcast. Ernie was a wonderful man and is sorely missed by family and friends as is his wife Lynne. I am so glad we knew him personally and the few pics I have of him and my children here at home are treasures. I have a few flowers from an arrangement that was at his funeral.
I attended the private funeral as well as the Memorial at the CBC building in Toronto...sad occasions but filled with loving memories of humourous times. I remember laffing and crying at the same time...
It will be 5 years in September...the time has gone so fast....

Yes Char, I agree 100% with you. A simple man but yet he gaved us so much when we were kids. I remember every weekday morning, it was "Chez Helene, Butternut Square, Friendly Giant, Then eventually, from Butternut Square, came Mr. Dress-Up. He was among other things a good one for drawing those funny yet always interesting pictures. I remember way back starting school. Grade 1, 2, and 3. I would think of these kids programs, missing them as I was now in school. They were has much of importance to me, as later on in life, Front Page Challenge, The Forest Rangers, Casey Jones, and then discovering in grade 9, the musical genius style of a great singer that touch me with his words, as if he was talking right to me, Gordon Lightfoot. I dont know what it is, else than, I love this country, and I am a proud Canadian. I have my name on the list of obtaining the Canadian Flag that flys on top of the Peace Tower in Ottawa. They tell me they change it every morning, and send them to people who have asked for it. There is a 7 year wait list. They sent me a 72 X 36 in. in the meantime, which is here in my guitar, computer room. On the wall over my head, looks just great.
Later Charlene... JJ.

I have a few of Ernie's sketches he made for my daughter. I invited him to her school for the children to have a thank you day for him. He came and all the kids had made thankyou cards and I bought a little trunk for them. Lisa presented them to him at the ceremony and since it was near her birthday he did some special drawings for her on his easel with magic marker. He gave the kids a demonstration of how to make pictures from letters of the alphabet and numbers. The kids in grades 6,7 and 8 were not at the asembly as planned but they were the ones who most wanted to be.The principal changed things at the last minute. When we walked into the school as classes were changing the whole place stopped and jaws dropped and kids were in awe that Mr. Dressup was right there! It was wonderful and Ernie loved it. Those older kids were not happy that they weren't included! Even the teachers were gobsmacked....He was a very beloved and respected man. And he loved Canada so much. He was very proud when he received his citizenship in 1994.

This is all very interesting to me Charlene. You were very lucky to get to know him personally. He seemed to be exactly the way you describe him. I saw an interview, of him some years back, it was not to long after his wife had died. If I remember correctly the interview was done outside where they lived all these years, and you could tell he was depressed, sad, talking about his life with her, and missing her so much.

I dont know life is sometimes weird... JJ.

I don't think he ever got over it. We were at their house just weeks before that day. He and Lynne were talking about that night in a few weeks that they were going to see a live stage show downtown in Toronto. Lynne was downtown and did some shopping. A car with a driver that had a medical condition jumped the curb and hit her. Police couldn't find Ernie to tell him and my father in-law was the one who walked down to the house and told him about Lynne. She was a greatlady and they were so looking forward to his having more time to do the things they loved doing together.

This is all interesting but also very sad. In this morning's paper, they have the editorial, like small cartoon picture. It's the tickle trunk, and has the hat on top, which he often wore on the show, and a sign on it saying, "DO NOT TICKLE, BY ORDER OF THE CBC." And a newspaper next to it that simply says,"MR.DRESS UP CANCELLED."

I could not find it on Canadaeast. Otherwise I would have posted it. JJ.
