Can anyone here tell me if there is a way to copyright song lyrics here on the web, and what web address is available. Thanks...Kev

When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form so that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

See www.loc.gov/copyright (US Copyright Office) for more information)

knightmoves,
If you feel you have created something that someone might use without your permission, you can register your copyright with the Library of Congress. Without a registered copyright, you have very limited legal recourse. In my opinion, it is very rare for an artist to use someone else's work without their permission, as there is always negative publicity surrounding these kinds of cases. You may not be able to sue them for royalties without a copyright, but you can sure present other evidence in court and to the media that puts the artist in an unfavorable light. No artist wants to look like the bad guy ripping off unsuspecting lyricists. There is only one sure way to protect yourself however, and that is to register your copyright. I just wish I could write a song that someone felt was good enough to steal .

Hope that helps

Walter,

I just checked out your website and listened to a couple of your songs...they are very good!!! Don't worry about me stealing from you, though, because I'm a really bad guitar player and an even worse singer!!!

Hey, thanks for the kind words, they mean a lot to me. The most any musician can ask for is an audience that appreciates his or her work. Thanks for taking the time to listen. The songs As the Sun Slowly Sets, and When I Think of You were both inspired by Mr. Lightfoot. I surely hope he pulls through his current difficulties. He has been a big influence in my life.
