J.P. Cormier of Cape Breton won for folk recording of the year for his album The Long River: A Personal Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.

Cormier said he's been a fan of the Canadian icon since he was young and received approval from the man himself for the project.

"He is the bard by which I measure my writing," Cormier said. "I've used him for the model of everything I've ever done.

"All songwriters look at him as the grandfather of Canadian songwriters."

It was quite the show - the east coasters know how to party! J.P. is so deserving of this award - and of course, like Lightfoot he is very humble.
I missed him being in the line-up at Hugh's Room on Saturday - he was quite something last year.

Sadly, "The Long River" probably can't be up for a JUNO because it's already recorded material (but for one song)- much like when "Beautiful" was put out as tribute to Gord a couple of years ago. Aengus Finnan had the only original song on the album and if all had been ABOUT Lightfoot as the theme it could have been nominated. Since it too was almost all previously recorded Lightfoot material it was not eligible.
darn!
Congrats to J.P.!
He did a duet with another east coast fellow last night that was awesome - what a guitarist!

pics at:go to GALA gallery - pics 51 and on-J.P. has ona flame shirt, sunglasses and hat.

A one man tribute LP is something I've always imagined doing. Gotta find this CD!
