in researching file size data for compact disks and mp3s I found this

which not only describes why the sampling rate of CDs and thus mp3s is 44,100 cycles per second but also why the original
CDs were 120 mm diameter with a limit of 74 minutes and also includes this inditement of Warner Bros

"The 74-minute playing time of a CD, being much longer than the 15 to 20 minutes per side possible with long-playing vinyl albums, was often used to the CD’s advantage during the early years when CDs and LPs vied for commercial sales. CDs would often be released with one or more bonus tracks, enticing consumers to buy the CD for the extra material.However, attempts to combine double LPs onto one CD occasionally resulted in an opposing situation in which the CD would actually offer fewer tracks than the LP equivalent. An example is the 1987 album Kiss Me,Kiss Me by The Cure, which states in the CD liner notes: "The track Hey You!!! which appears on the double album and cassette has been omitted so as to facilitate a single compact disc." The 2006 re-release of this album saw the re-inclusion of the missing track. Another example is the original late-1980s Warner Bros records reissue of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk album, which substituted the long album version of "Sara" with the shorter single version. Enough complaints were lodged to eventually convince Warner Bros. to remaster the album in the mid-1990s with the original contents intact"

From this I have to conclude that we as a group did not complain enough about the similar situation with Gord's Gold where the subsequent reissue maintained the omission of AO8A

It's sad, but it seems no one much cares about CD's anymore. The tide has turned and digital downloads are the mainstay these days. You may never get the chance to purchase "Gord's Gold" on CD the way it was presented on vinyl again. I hope either Gord or Linus Entertainment will, in the future give us a chance to download Gord's albums in their entirety in the future. The business has changed so much in the last few years that many musicians have admitted a new CD is unlikely. Recently, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull postulated that a new Tull album may never happen, instead various, newly recorded songs might be available for download on their web site. I would encourage Gordon and his people to find a way to purchase gordonlightfoot.com from Val and set it up that way. Seems to be the wave of the future

I was lamenting the demise of vinyl and CD's just after last Christmas and wrote the following for the Corfid Group:

I feel that my observation has shown to be true and is continuing unabated. I feel that kids today will miss the "album concept" experience. Browsing the bins at music stores is a dying experience as well. Sad......

Can anyone imagine not having Lightfoot's 'Back Here On Earth', 'Summertime Dream', 'Summer Side Of Life', 'Don Quiote', 'Old Dan's Records', 'Shadows'. or perhaps 'A Painter Passing Through' as their entire works but just as individual song downloads in a "digital musical soup" with no song linked to another. What a sterile world!
