What other favourite artist of your's, would you like to hear do a Lightfoot song? And you think he,or she, would do a great job with?

The song would be right for this artist, of course, male or female.

For me Glen Campbell, has already done Lightfoot's, "The Last Time I Saw Her Face".

Id like to see him do more Lightfoot greats.

And I can't forget John Mellencamp...Would like to hear him do, "Sundow."

Im not a big fan of Celine Dion. But with her reputation as having one of the world's greatest voice. I would have alway's liked to hear her version of, "If You Could Read My Mind.".. Jesse.

Here's a wildcard shot JJ:

If he is still recording in good voice,
(hold the laughs at first in the peanut gallery) - Roger Whittaker, recording first The Wreck, and if he could pull it off without messing with it too much, his deep bass voice would serve the song well.

Second, I'd want to hear him try CRT for the same reasons ( you'd have to hear his "water Boy") to know why this would be a good possibility.

And, I'd like to hear the Boss give Sundown a try. He's got the raw edge that could really make this fun.

Lastly, and this is embarrasing because I can't for sure remember his name ( my wife bought me the CD for my birthday and is in the car now) I believe his name is Andre Bocelli, a phenomenol artist I'd never heard of until ole' David Foster produced his signature album (perhaps state-side only,as he's long enough in the tooth I do not think he can be a new discovery).

He has an outstanding voice, truly, and I heard him , thanks to David Foster I'm sure, on a TV commercial promoting his new signature album, and I said "I gotta get that album" to my wife.

He has the first voice I thought could cover Gord's slower romantic ballads such as IYCRMM, with healthy vibrato and enough character.

I thought of Michael Buble, the young crooner all the ladies are going ga-ga over; he sounds to me sort of like Harry Connick just before puberty(who I heard helped encourage his career) in the oldies standards arena and new big band.

He does have a good voice, but as of my only CD listen does not have a mature enough voice to do justice to Gord's historically deeper register. So, my next thought then is Andre Bocelli (sp?) covering "Beautiful", or IYCRMM, or that "Same Old Obsession".

Hey, lastly, how 'bout Hoyt Axton, who has done an entire GL tribute album, cover "Whispers of the North", and "Sea of Tranquility" ? Actually, he's one of my favourite cover artists for Gord's work, and also is a respectable songwriter himself. Good thread JJ

geo Steve,

I don't think Hoyt can make it....he passed away some years ago. An interesting character in his time.

Springsteen doing "Sundown"....I like the idea.

Roger Whittaker....beautiful voice. I think he could even make "Achy Break Heart" tolerable.

Thank's for the kind words GeoSteve, Some pretty good choices you make there. Of course Roger Whittaker, one of the best voices around today. Always did like him.

Dont know if you ever heard his beautiful song, "Canada Is", from the 70's? I can't think of a more beautiful song about Canada. I was always, kind of sad that Gord didn't write that one.

I have never seen him in concert, but I hope one day to be able too. He does concert this way, every 4 or 5 years, never in Moncton. In NB, it's alway's in Sackville. Im sure he must do an evening worth to remember. Great story teller, plays a good 12 string, and he is a wonderful whistler. All in all, he is just a great entertainer...

As far as Hoyt Axton, correct me if Im wrong, but has he not pass on? A few years ago, I might be wrong tho...

The Boss doing Sundown, would be worth, something to see and hear...

Thank's again GeoSteve, take care and later...Jesse.

Jesse Joe,

No sweat. geo Steve probably knows that Axton has moved along, but his post was worded in the present tense, so I wasn't sure. It is an interesting thread.

Incidently, Char if you read this, after you told me about the word bloke, I looked it up, and sure enough, you were speaking the truth. A "fellow", among other things... Jesse.

LOL!! How's the whether in Toronto Charlene? Down here, it's amazing how quickly it turns around. Last week we could have, gone walking, bike rides, all night. At midnight it was still hot enough, for T-Shirt. And now at nights, it's already cooled up, considerably. Feels a little bit like fall.

August 10, down here, the lobster fisherman, go at it, with there traps, till October 10. And every year it never misses, evenings, feels like autumn.

Mind you, that there are some great fall days coming up in late September, till late October. Beautiful scenery, as the leaves start to change colours. It's my favourite season.

I remember in 1987, we would head up to Halifax, NS. It was Oct,24th. And the long stretch of woods, each side of the TCH, beautiful colours a real spectacle. And what made that trip more enjoyable, Gordon Lightfoot in concert, at The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.

My first Lightfoot concert experience, I will never forget that. It was around the "East Of Midnight" time. He sang many songs from his then latest LP. I remember "Morning Glory", when he sang, "Alimony, Palimony puts a dent in me." He made a face, that got good laughter from the crowd.

He did 3 shows, Oct 23, 24, and 25. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was all pretty much sold out. The Acoustic at The Cohn in Halifax, is incredible.

Anyway Sorry for yaping on, but when I get started on Gordy, it's hard to stop me. At least thats what they tell me down here. "They just dont understand," LOL.

Later Char, ... JJ.

Jesse,

I actually prefer to hear Lightfoot do covers but to answer your question:

The only one that comes to mind at this moment would be Canary Yellow Canoe done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Barring that I'll stick with the originals.

JJ - it's cooled off here too! The mornings are almost like the days when school starts in September and the kids head out with sweaters and windbreakers but come home all hot and red-faced!

I wish I could remember my first Lightfoot concert at Massey....I know it was cold cuz it was March in Toronto!
lol

I have no idea who the Red Hot Chili Peppers are but will take Bill's word for it that it would be interesting to hear them do CYC...
i think....

Yes timetraveler, there is only so much {hot humid muggy} weather, a person can take. Right now here, it's real comfortable. Cool evening breeze.

Charlene your absolutely right, about the kids heading out in September, with sweaters, windbreakers, in the morning. And then early afternoon coming home with red face, all hot. Pretty much the same down here.

You should see all the cars with Ontario and Quebec license plates, parked at the warf, about 2 miles from here. Waiting for the fisherman's catch of the day. It's incredible, they want to buy and eat fresh lobster...

omigawd i remember when we were down east for vacation back in 79 I think. We ate fresh caught lobster, fresh picked potatoes and corn till the cows came home....We even had fresh steak!! - we were camping all over NB, PEI, Cape Breton and NS and those dinners were to die for....We really outdid it in PEI tho - what a meal.....better than any restaurant we went to down there...and we ate at some good ones! I'm sure we listened to Lightfoot in the car on cassette along with the local music playing on the radio. We didn't have CD players or IPods - it was the radio/cassettes or nothing!
LOL
