Phil Ormrod The Best Friend I Never Met.
A tribute to Gordon lightfoot.
C G
We didn’t meet in sixty seven, when Pete brought “Lightfoot”home.
F C Am D7
That’s when the seeds of friendship, through some special songs, were sown.
C G
Nurtured by the “ Early Morning Rain”through the “ Changes”and the rest,
F C Am G7 C
Early Lightfoot and the tunes to come became the songs I’ve loved the best.

C G
We didn’t meet again in seventy two when on concert tour you came.
F C Am D7
In the crowd again in seventy three and by the music moved again.
C G
By the third time you made Dublin a hundred tepestries you’d woven,
F C G C
As a minstrel and a balladeer, your reputation proven.

Itseems for everypassing mood or situation in life’s game,
That you’d draw on life experience that somehow we’d shared the same.
So when I loved and lost or won, walked the mountains or the wood,
You wrote the lines to catch the mood in a way no other could.

And we didn’t meet as seventy or eighty eight did pass and fade,
As he decades passed my good friend Gord played on and plied his trade.
A true minstrel, not just of the dawn, but of all in life itself,
And the music and the record pile grew higher on the shelf.

And so, for over thirty years, Gords’ stuff I’ve sung and played,
Not tiring of the lilts and lyrics, so skillfully he’s laid.
For half his life he’s been to me, and to thousands more I’ll bet,
Through the music and the story lines, The Best Friend I Never Met.
Phil Ormrod, Sunday, 10th January, 1999.
When I wrote those lines in ninety nine I thought my ode quite long,
But when I posted on the forum I was asked about in song.
So I picked around the Martin for a melody and a key,
And a bridge into a final verse for my best friend from me.

So By now it’s nearly Fifty years, I’m singing Gordon still,
And as long as I am able, I’m sure I always will.
So for most my life he’s been to me, and to thousands more I’ll bet,
Through the music and the story lines
The Best Friend I Never Met.
Through the music and the story lines
The Best Friend I Never Met.
Phil Ormrod, Thursday, 1st December, 2016.
