just heard the original recording of the 1st song i mentioned. sounds pretty good and it's always nice to hear these original recording of songs that were recorded for the 75 GG LP. differences, seemed like his voice sounded higher in this 1. of course this 1 also had jingle bells in it like the re-recording. Changes i've heard for the 1st time tonight.

Is it just me or does "Changes" sound somewhat pensive? Even though it's supposed to be about the natural progression of "changes" that we all go through?

...or is that the point?

Hi Borderstone.
Don't know exactly what you mean by "pensive". I have sung the song many times and have the impression that some of the lyrics were written to flow easily off the tongue rather than have a specific meaning.
"Passions will part to a warm melody As fires will sometimes turn cold Like petals in the wind Where puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes"
Anyway, it sounds good even though I don't see much meaning in some of the lines.

Here are the original lyrics as written by Phil Ochs:

Sit by my side, come as close as the air,
Share in a memory of gray;
Wander in my words, dream about the pictures
That I play of changes.

Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow they fade.
And then they have to die, trapped within
the circle time parade of changes.

Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind,
Visions of shadows that shine.
Til one day I returned and found they were the
Victims of the vines of changes.

The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
Swings through a hollow of haze,
A race around the stars, a journey through
The universe ablaze with changes.

Moments of magic will glow in the night
All fears of the forest are gone
But when the morning breaks they're swept away by
golden drops of dawn, of changes.

Passions will part to a strange melody.
As fires will sometimes burn cold.
Like petals in the wind, we're puppets to the silver
strings of souls, of changes.

Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else,
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I'll kiss you one more time, and leave you on
the rolling river shores of changes.

(repeat first verse)

It's from the "There But For Fortune" album.

I am not sure if I would label "Changes" as pensive, but Song for a Winter's Night I would...there are parts of the guitar bass line in this song that have somewhat somber undertones, and they don't occur very often...it's hard to explain where though.
