Which favourites of yours are missing from Songbook? Just curious.

"Talking in Your Sleep"

"Restless" was subbed for it.

Wish they both could have been on it.

"Partners" and "The Auctioneer." Both crowd favorites from his 70s concerts.

Surprised that "The Patriots' Dream" was missing, not to mention "Cherokee Bend", "Home From The Forest", "Tattoo", "Miguel", "Christian Island" etc. I Could go on!

well said John
Amen to the 1966 hit "Spin Spin" and "My Love for You" and like Ron Jones I can never say enough good things about "Face"
not "crazy" about the other two though
IMHO "Spin Spin" well deserves a place in one anthology or another (it should have been in the largely superfluous "Classic Masters" CD) rather than just be hidden away on the Bear Family Plus CD issues
I would certainly add
Partners
Echoes Of Heroes

and from the ranks of released songs
most certainly Miguel-epic
and the currently "in rotation" Minstrel Of The Dawn but that is on Gord's Gold
yes easy to go on and on re "disk 5" suggestions(but then the box would need to be deeper)
John Fowles
Released in 1999,Songbook is a model box-set. It comes with a hard cover book, with a wealth of classic photos, and an in depth and sympathetic essay by Nicholas Jennings, all packaged in a hard shell box to keep everything neat and organized.

the songbook review by David Kidney is fairly recent as Gord was still hospitalized at the time. The review ended with:-
"I'm hoping he rebounds and tours and records again, but right now I'm sitting here thinking about an old friend and listening to him sing and remembering something Gord's old pal Joni Mitchell sang, "you don't know what you've got til it's gone."
Nice thoughts

I agree with all of the above. Of course, what we all really want is everything the man ever recorded or sang at all times and places, in one easily accesible place, right?

Don,

I could not agree more. Which is why I had my media closet built without a door, LOL. Most fans, if they can afford it, already own everything he's put out and we buy something like Songbook for the "rarities", right ?

I thought I would reply to this old topic which I suspect many of our newer members are unaware of because there are three of my favo(u)rites in Gord's current selection of songs in "rotation" that were omitted from Songbook
the particular three I am thinking of are:-
the ultra-magnificent "Restless" and "Let It Ride", probably jointly my top favourites for a few years now, and the recently back in rotation "Minstrel Of The Dawn" joining two songs from "Harmony" the title track and "Clouds Of Loneliness"
I know that MOTD is already on Gord's Gold but IMHO it deserves to be included in Songbook too (Oops I obviously mean Songbook 5 not 2!!)
John Fowles
My intention is to list up a Songbook 5 selection suitable for the requisite CD total maximum time of 80 minutes that any fan can create for him/herself noting also the selections on another similar project:-
topic: Gord's Gold III. at:-
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...1;t=002385;p=4
This which reached a mammoth 8 discs of 11 tracks each (by comparison the Songbook boxed set's four CDs are 24;22;22;21 tracks
But that topic cannot now be replied to because
it has already been closed,
John Fowles
Earlier in this topic I had displayed the pair of fine Gord like animated graphics found I said at the time on:-
http://www.greenmanreview.com/cd/cd_songbook.html

i just checked and they are in fact on the "Green Man Review" search page at:-
http://www.greenmanreview.com/search/query_google.htm
searching for GL there
I read for the first time a February 2005 appreciation by songbook's co-producer Thane Tierney (then at Rhino) on:-
http://www.greenmanreview.com/letters/loc_archives.html
"It was also particularly gratifying to see the very positive review of Gordon Lightfoot's Songbook box set, which I co-produced with GL half a decade ago.

Cheers, Thane Tierney"
