I well remember back in 1997 visiting the office of a fellow team member of our local UK skittles team (he had a small business connected with computers and software and had recently hooked up to an early British Telecom high speed intenet connection.
At that point I had never ever been on the internet, so was thrilled when he offered to demonstrate his connection for me
We soon got onto a search engine
(
http://www.altavista.com
which was the "in" search engine at that pre-Google time I seem to remember )
After a few demo searches my friend asked what I would like to search for and I hesitatingly suggested "Gordon Lightfoot" asking him to see if there was anything at all on the internet and saying that I really was not expecting to find anything, because as many others have since recounted I was I thought the only Lightfoot fan in existence,
So there was no chance that anybody would have mentioned him on the internet, obviously the search proved me to be very wrong
In particular one result was a link to an mp3 of Burton Cummings' GL/Rod Stewart/Maggie May parody from his LP, which I have enjoyed ever since.
Today a Google Alert, that Char has yet to mention here, linked to a blog page containing an embedded youtube video of this parody but instead of the usual audio from the album this is a completely different live version of it:-
As well as Maggie May there is a short bit of "Gord" singing a Cummings song and the clIp ends with Burton doing Roy Orbison with the "Big O" doing Lightfoot doing Only The Lonely
In fact the uploader MrWaynold is obviously one huge Cummings fan as his videos include several other BC parodies including singing Mack The Knife a la Bobby Darin a "cummings and goings production"
Enjoy!!!
