I was dating a girl from Santa Ana, CA named Jeannie Merrit. We were at her house and she had "Did She Mention My Name" album on her stereo. It was the first time I had heard of Lightfoot or heard any of his music. I'm not sure why she and I didn't keep seeing each other. But I'm forever grateful that she introduced me to him and his music. This was in 1969.
