Gordon Lightfoot was one of the sweetest men put on this earth.. Years after working with Gord in the late 70's, we attended his Massey Hall concerts. He was a very gracious and loving man. I played on the two albums that started with the letter E and had the good fortune to do lead sheets for one of them. He sang every song exactly the same melodically and rhythmically on every take. And there were many!!. And the tuning!! He would say "Is it ringin' right?"
He was an extremely articulate performer. When we first worked together, I guess in order to become familiar musically, we got together for probably what was about two or three weeks every day at his Rosedale home while he was composing the songs for one of those albums. Can't remember which one but that's not important. We would play the songs over and over again and he would look at me and say "Is that any good?" My God, it was good!!
What I would like to convey is that he was one of the most caring and generous individuals I have ever known. We made contact several years after recording those albums and he always remembered that I had gotten some manuscript paper for him. Such a small detail to be remembered by him 30 or 40 years later. And so thoughtful. I shall miss him dearly and will always remember those times. Gord, you will Rest In Peace!!!
