Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin' 06-30-2006 12:08 PM

Who is member #1 of this forum?

Which username is the very first member of this board? Florian (moderater) is #3, and I think so Florian Bodenseher (administrator) is #2, so which is the first?

Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin' 06-30-2006 12:09 PM

Sir Johnny was the 5th. Corfid may have been the first.
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...c;f=1;t=000003

Corfid 06-30-2006 12:14 PM

Hmmmmmm, apparently not. Corfid was the first UNREGISTERED member, but not the first to actually register. Who was the first?

Jesse Joe 07-04-2006 09:55 AM

This is very interesting, just who is # 1, if any. Or were they saving it , in case Gord himself wanted to be a Corfidian.

Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin' 07-04-2006 10:23 AM

Actually, the name "Gordon Lightfoot" is already taken, so maybe they did.

Janice 07-04-2006 04:45 PM

I imagine Florian, the owner, might have also been number 1 in addition to being 2 and 3. After all no one else could be a member until he created the site.

It does appear that John is the first member after Florian's various memberships, to join.

OK this is long but it contains text only (no pix)

I seem to remember that I came here very soon after Florian had announced his new site in a posting on the Newsgroup (see link below).
I first encountered Florian in his earlier Newsgroup posting on september 2 1999 where I note incidentally that he used the screenname "corfid" at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.m...65be80e600c007
and in which he presented his "personal interpretation" on the meaning of 'Same Old Obsession'
Very soon after that(on Mon, Sep 20 1999) Florian announce to an unsuspecting world that
"I set up a Gordon Lightfoot website and I hope it will attract new fans to
the music of Gordon Lightfoot as well as benefit current fans."
read his historic posting at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.m...cb705c3?hl=en&
My own first corfid posting was to start a new topic immediately I had read florian's announcement on the very same day (September 20th)
I cheekily entitled it "Someone has to be second" at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...003;p=1#000000
note that was topic number 3 in today's Forum 1
I opened by saying "Looks like it's me, as Corfid got here first"
so I obviously had read at least one posting by Florian "the first"
Forum 1 topic number 1 is now at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...001;p=1#000000
I suspect that this was originally from a previously unregistered member going by the unlikely screen name of "corfid"
I suspect Florian before posting his reply above did a quick registration of the name corfid on June 30th as Member Member # 1385. and I note that his first unregistered posting to topic number 1 at:_
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...001;p=1#000000
contains these telling lines
"Hi, and welcome to the discussion board.
[This message has been edited by Florian (edited September 21, 1999).]"
topic 2 no longer exists in the collection accessible from here but astute use of the ""Wayback Machine" at http://www.wayback.notlong.com
easy link to:-
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
accesses various archived copies of the forums
including the very first (presumed) test forum topic
called would you believe "test1" at:-
http://web.archive.org/web/200304250...ML/000001.html
on august 31 1999 by an unregistered "corfid"
Note at that time it was "Forum1"
Florian replied (as "florian moderator")
to the first small talk topic at:-
http://web.archive.org/web/200305032...ML/000001.html
Florian also used forum3 for a test on december 10th 1999 at:-
http://web.archive.org/web/200304250...ML/000001.html
so at some point he must have renumbered the 3 forums in reverse order
I found that it is not now possible to reply to that old topic
at least not from the archived copy
but adapting the address to the current format in f2=forum2 as:-
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...c&f=2&t=000001
I could reply and did so just now.
anybody who has looked up my profile by checking the "directory" facility by looking for "fowles"
will have found that I have registered three times, originally
John Fowles (Member # 5)
Member

Registered: September 20, 1999
and
fowlesjohn (Member # 507)
Member
Registered: October 18, 2002
I suspect that that was when I forgot how I had registered so used my name in reverse as I had done with hotmail
and
johnfowles2 (Member # 1169)
Member
More »
Registered: August 05, 2005
when I needed an alter ego for a Private Messaging test

checking profiles
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...ile;u=00000001
so now member number1 is an unnamed individual who registered "A Long Time Ago! " as did unnamed number 2
number 3
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...ile;u=00000003
is indeed Florian who registered on 12th september 1999 as Administrator
as is number 4 Florian registering on 18th september 1999 as moderator
Member number 6 dvuk1968 is interesting as he only posted 4 times back in 1999 to one topic
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...006;p=1#000000
or
http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...c&f=2&t=000006
(coincidentally the topic number is 6 also
about replacing his stolen Salute vinyl)
and in his profile claimed to be from "Eatontown, NJ, USA"
As soon as I post this I'll try PM to him (might work if he still has the same email addy)

Yes well I rarely bother looking at johnfowles2's profile for messages as johnfowles is where I am usually logged in as.
I see your two messages. well done and also I replied to a message there from Char
re your question aboot high speed. I think Susan just might have got over her fears about this (she is convinced that all the local crooks intend to park outside our house coupled up to our computers in order to glean info on our bank accounts especially passwords. but lately she has given encouraging
indications that soon we'll have it!! woo hoo

Why?
Possibly because this member already has too many member names for his brain to keep track of??

Why?
To see if it was a registered name or not. :) I could've tried to just change my username temporarily to see if it was taken or not, but I didn't think of it at the time.

The easier way to determine if a user name is registered, is to just go to the directory and key it in to search.

Shutup and Deal, I'm Losin' 07-08-2006 07:04 AM

Okay. ;)

Re: Who is member #1 of this forum?

I have just refound this old thread and thought it worth resurrecing for the newcomers here
Whilst doing so I will also take the chance to add the text of a web page on my own website regarding the history of the Newsgroup and how that inexorably led to the very existance of corfid
(I cannot use a link to the actual page at the moment because many of my site's html pages have been hacked by some worhless excuse for a human and have extra code inserted that google treats as malware so I am facing the daunting task of downloading my complete website then editing out the garbage. Thanks to Char Mr Google and the Russian equivalent of Google
http://http://yandex.com
for alerting me to the problem
Gordon Lightfoot Newsgroup History
I had composed the following basically as a reply to a short posting on the Newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot
subject:-
A 5-year archive of this newsgroup
at:-

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...ot/iLb-b973Ed0
the posting had said:- On Jun 29, 4:55 pm, Dan wrote:
Google bought DejaNews.
I am very interested in the history of the Newsgroup, mainly since it was an announcement about the then new Lightfoot chat room
that caught my eye in 1999 and which in turn led to me meeting my future wife and life saver Susan
I therefore researched and composed what became a lengthy and detailed response that was apparently too long for the Newsgroup to accept'
.So rather than waste my efforts I decided to adapt what I had written as this web page
I recall that certainly dejanews was the source of some if not all threads on alt.music.lightfoot when I first discovered the newsgroup back in 1997 my very first posting in reply to somebody named (improbably) Jenney is at:-

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...A/yQMaCYuO5zAJ
but later in 1999 it was taken over by remarq.com. searching for that name I found an early posting by someone else improbably named "Char" at:-

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...ot/SVPW1dVgnAQ
one replier was a knowledgable fan with another highly unlikely name:-
Florian Bodenseher
In one of his few newsgroup postings before he launched his own site at:-
http://corfid.com
Wayne Francis had started this usenet newsgroup in November 1994
see his announcement on another newsgroup at:-
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...I/6QNuUhwOjWwJ
For a very long time Wayne progressively honed a series of detailed Lightfoot FAQ pages as Newsgroup threads
It is well worth reading a posting Wayne made in 1997 that had as the subject:-
Who Am I? (was - Who Is Wayne Francis?) at:-
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...c/_m_CZvxIbwoJ
in which Wayne responded to a question from Bill Weitz:-
"Who are you Wayne, and how do you know what you know, and how come you don't have a GL page on the net?"
His detailed response included paying tribute to Matthew Fifer's then existing pioneering GL website
One of many Archived copies of which, from 2001, is at:-

http://web.archive.org/web/200112121...oot/index.html
Wayne did conclude:-
"That being said, I have for some time now been conceptualizing my own Lightfoot page and hope to put those ideas into motion
within the year. It will in no way be in competition with the existing site, but will hopefully be sufficiently different in content and style to stand alone on its own merits.
Wayne"
and of course rather more than his predicted "year" later in 1999 Wayne's cornucopia at:-
http://lightfoot.ca
was launched which is basically Wayne's Newsgroup FAQs formulated into a web site
initially at least and as Wayne still acknowledges at the bottom of his main page
"Created and maintained by Wayne Francis. Design by Bill Weiss."
Anyway to return to Arnold 's main question:-
"But in case they don't, is there a software program that will automatically download and store an entire newsgroup? I'd like to
archive this and a few others for posterity...and of course no one has the time to download the posts one-by-one."
once upon a time I could get Internet Exploder's built in Outlook Express to list newsgroups and after updating then whatever
threads were available were in fact automatically saved on my hard drive as a file alt.music.lightfoot.dbx
in a folder called funnily enough "outlook express"
I have one such collection from september 2005 archived on my external hard drive as a 1.98MB file but my PC cannot seem
to open it right now.But there is a basically empty "outlook" folder on my main hard drive

Re: Who is member #1 of this forum?

Good job with all this research, into the early Lightfoot internet happenings.
