I was working at the Old Town Folklore Center in Chicago---1965 or 66---connected to the Old Town School Of Folk Music. A NEW singer named Gordon Lightfoot was in town to play at a folk club called Mother Blues. Chicago audiences had turned on to G.L.'s music because Bob Gibson was singing his songs around town. A friend named Guy Guilbert, brought the audition recording Gordon had sent to the club, into the shop for me to hear. (That floppy LP only had 4 songs on it.) This was one of them!

THE BEST YEARS OF HER LIFE
by Gordon Lightfoot

chorus)
Oh, the prettiest time in her life,
The most wonderful years in her life,
No one must see her poor heart grieve,
In the prettiest time in her life,
The most wonderful years in her life.
Young man, don't go to Dallas today,
Young man, take heed what I say,
Take heed lest the hopes and the dreams be torn,
In the prettiest time in her life.

In Dallas town there waits another man,
With different views and different plans,
Beware of him thy young life to spare,
In the prettiest time in her life.

Wait not for the sun to rise again,
Wait not for warning from your men,
Beloved is the one who waits by her side,
In the prettiest time of her life.

I don't think Gordon ever recorded it. It was on a 4-song demo 7-inch LP (33 & a third rpm) he sent around to clubs in the later 60s to hustle work. I taped it off that little record----one he had sent to a folk club bar called MOTHER BLUES that was owned by the late great lady, Lorraine Blue. Amazing music was heard in that club.

JJ:

That was incredible. I often wondered what that song sounded like; so effective with those amazing photographs.

Thanks...you made my day!

a pleasure (not my video)

it's funny how ya stumble on stuff....youtube profiling and tags must have made it happen

i had been looking at Lincoln video to show someone what the legendary beard looked like (i'd commented that I thought i looked Amish or Abe-ish when i lowered my Halloween beard for a minute to cool off)

a minute later, someone e-mailed me looking for SM version of SFAWN, but instead I searched and sent them link to Gord's original version cos they had only heard GG1

anyhow, on the right of the screen popped out this video...maybe it tied the Lightfoot and assassination (Lincoln, Kennedy, etc) keyword chain together

so anyhow, thx youtube and guitarman (he should be a member here!)

Thank you for sharing this.

The melody is not one of Gord's better ones, and the tempo felt a bit rushed. But the combination of the lyrics and the images was very powerful.

I remember exactly the spot on our road where I was when the news came over the radio that President Kennedy had died.

And my mother was always very happy that I shared a birthday with Jackie.
