I don't know how you go about picking the song of the month, but could I suggest "Forgive Me, Lord" for December? I don't know about anyone else, but I first heard that at a concert and I have waited YEARS for it to come out on an album. I was delighted when it finally did. It says a lot about how Gord sees himself over the years and his trials and tribulations and I think in a way it relates to all of us. It would be a good song both to send out one millenium and bring in another.

Florian!

Thank you so much. And I hope everyone else agrees with your decision. We could probably all learn something from that song.

By the way, in the line:

..."I've been down on my luck..
As a matter of fact,
I've even been chased ..."

Is it "chased" or "chaste"? Could be taken either way. Food for thought, eh?

LAMS

------------------
"Love and maple syrup
go together like the
sticky winds of winter
when they meet....
If you go into the forest
Gaze up through the trees
The sky is white.
You can understand
What makes the forest
Greet the man
Like a mother's only
child ..."

Hi LAMS,

You are right, he clearly sings 'chaste'.
This expression fits in the context of the song a lot better than 'chased'.

'chaste' is a new vocabulary to me, I had to look it up in the dictionary.

Thanks for the input.

I was very happy to find this song as "song of the month" for December. Like LAMS, I first heard this in the early 80's. I fell in love with it immediately. It is really a different song and it strays from his usual path (if he does have a usual path).
I believe the song comes off better "live" in concert than the one that was released on the CD.
I never thought the song would be released. There was always a void when I thought of GL's career over the years, that this song was not released. As soon as I found out the song was on the "Songbook" CD, I rushed out and got it, and it was the first song I played. It was like a weight off my shoulders, (a release) that the song came out. My other two "releases" will be "Farewell To Annabell" when the "Old Dan's Records" CD comes out, and I wonder if he will ever record "Farewell To Nova Scotia".
But back to "Forgive Me Lord", It is one of my favorties of all time. A class song.

Merry Christmas Everyone,
Wes.....

Wes,
Yes, Wes, he does have a "usual path"...

It's odd you said that it sounded better in concert. Gord himself said the same thing. He said he never recorded it before now because it always seemed to "fall apart" in the recording studio.
I felt the same way when it finally came out. I'm ashamed to say, I didn't even know "Songbook" was out until he announced at a concert at "Humphreys" in June. And even then when he said "Songbook" I thought he was talking about that older Canadian CD that came out several years ago by the same name. He joked and said, "This is 'Songbook' II." "Forgive Me Lord" was the first song I played, too. I've since just about worn it out. It says a lot about how he views himself.

And I'm wondering when he'll release "The Piddling Pup" on a CD. I love that one!!

Everyone have a Merry Christmas. I told my family, I don't care what's under the tree for me on Christmas morning ... as long as it's dressed in denim and singing "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" LOL

Have a great Christmas!!
LAMS
