well he called promptly at 8 (like being at a concert!) and he asked if we could do it early next week, like on Tuesday. I said that was perfectly fine and that he could sing Happy Birthday to me when he calls. He said "is that your birthday? you're going to interview me on your BIRTHDAY?" I said yep-best present I could get.!".. He said, ok, that's very, very nice, i look forward to it!"..
so...now I wait...again..lol
VERY nerve wracking sitting and waiting for the phone to ring, hit RECORD on the digital recorder and the cassette recorder and answer the phone and hit the speaker button too before the phone clicks into the message machine..lol -- and remember to breathe!

It will be a great birthday, Char! Hopefully he calls on the early side so you can relax. I'd be afraid to have a bathroom break thinking the phone might ring, lol.

I'd say enjoy the call & your birthday but that's redundant, isn't it? I kind of would like to forget birthdays at this point, unless I was getting that kind of present. Maybe since he knows it's your birthday, he'll sing happy birthday to you Either way, enjoy! And can't wait to hear about it!

I'd like to think he's spending this weekend rehearsing his rendition of Happy Birthday to CHar!
Hey - two years ago when he phoned me he said he wasn't going to sing I'll Tag Along at Mariposa...and then he did..

Ooh...a thought to the future...a conference call where we can all dial up and hear you guys live! My wife has these for workshops...callers can listen only so as not to disrupt flow.

July 10, 2012
3rd Gordon Lightfoot CHat with CHar

When I saw Gordon in Orillia at Casino Rama in April it was after a lot of media coverage of the release of the “ALL LIVE” CD consisting of tracks recorded from 1998-2001 at Massey Hall in Toronto. There was TV, radio, print coverage for a few weeks and he was everywhere I turned! So I sort of gave him the gears after the concert and said I felt left out that I wasn’t one of the reporters going to his house to do an interview! Laughing, he explained it had all been set up by the record company and they all showed up on one day taking turns speaking with him. I told him I was just giving him a hard time but he surprised me and said we could do another of our phone chats. So I obviously said, “OK!” He told me he’d call and we could set up a date and time. OK!

Fast forward to June 15 in Ottawa and after the show the first thing Gordon says to me was, “We have to do that CHat! We’ll get to it CHar!” and I once again said “OK!”… He also reminded me in Montreal two nights later and then in Kitchener 4 nights after that on June 21. He’s a man who is true to his word! I told him to finish up the tour and take a few days to relax when he got back home and then we could do our CHat. So that’s how things were left.

On Thursday July 5 I received an 11 a.m. call from Anne @ EMP asking if I was available for Gordon to call that evening between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Well as a matter of fact I WAS available! The day before that call I had prepared my recorders (digital and tape) and checked over my list of questions/thoughts I would refer to as I spoke with Gordon. I had a feeling he would be calling. Needless to say nothing else was done for the rest of the day after that call from Anne.
At 7:59 p.m. the phone rang and The Man said “CHar! It’s Gord!” I said hello and asked him how he was and he said we’d have to do our CHat the following week, early in the week, like maybe Tuesday? I told him that was not a problem and I looked forward to hearing from him then..and when he called back he could sing Happy Birthday to me because Tuesday, July 10 was my birthday. He laughed and said, "is that your birthday? You're going to interview me on your BIRTHDAY?" I said yep-best present I could get!" He said, “ok, that's very, very nice, I look forward to it!"

On Saturday, July 7 some Tweets came up from the Mariposa Festival being held in Orillia that mentioned the surprise guest, Gordon Lightfoot was there and other folks started posting pictures of him. Jann Arden was the headliner on the main stage that night and as it drew close to her time to perform she was tweeting too. “I was just shoulder to shoulder with Gordon Lightfoot. I am speechless.” Then, “Honestly. Freaked out that Gordon spoke to me.” “I can’t wait to call my folks and tell them I met Gordon!!!” The other people who were tweeting were just as gobsmacked and excited as Jann. Had Gordon and I done our chat on the first night he called one of my questions was going to be “will you be back at Mariposa any time soon?” Perhaps he would have told me he’d be there on Saturday and I could have tried to get 90 minutes north to see him again. And I could have tried hitting him up for a ride!

7:48 – July 10, 2012
After saying HI to Gordon and thanking him for calling I asked him about his trip to Orillia on July 7 to be a surprise guest at Mariposa. He told me he had been asked to attend and wasn’t sure if he would sing or not. I mentioned that Jann Arden was quite thrilled to meet him and was tweeting that she could hardly wait to phone her parents in Alberta and tell them. Her tweets were: “I am shoulder to shoulder with Gordon Lightfoot. I am speechless.” “Honesty. Freaked out that Gordon spoke to me.” “I am honoured and excited to be performing at the Mariposa Folk Festival tonight.” “Gordon Lightfoot is Canada.” “There are moments in a person’s life when planets collide and dreams collide with nothing but humility and love.” “I can’t wait to call my folks and tell them I met Gordon!” “People are music to my ears.” “Thank you Mariposa! What a fantastic night!”

I told Gordon about some of the tweets and he said he told her, “I sure don’t want to step on anybody’s toes” and “she was just more than receptive and gracious. We had pictures taken and my two daughters were there. I had a little family group there.” He told me he had seen one of her shows a while back. He laughed and said “really!” when I said Jann must have been excited to have Gordon Lightfoot open for her.

It reminded him of a couple of years earlier that Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo were surprise performers prior to his set. He said, “my god these guys are so hot they were a hard act to follow.”

He spoke about the honour of receiving the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal and attending three events for it. http://canadiancrown.gc.ca/eng/13318.../1331815965391 There were 30 recipients who received their medals at the Parliament Buildings in Toronto (others rec’d theirs in Ottawa and various other cities across Canada) He mentioned that “Natalie McMaster got one too, folks from all walks of life were there.”
http://www.nataliemacmaster.com/

He said he was seated between Stephen Lewis http://www.stephenlewisfoundation.or...-stephen-lewis and Major General Mackenzie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_MacKenzie
“Interesting guys to talk to, I got into some very interesting conversations with them.” “A couple of weeks after that they had a display of photographs of the Queen over the last 60 years – many of her visits to Canada. My favourite was of Queen Elizabeth meeting Pierre and Margaret Trudeau. Wonderful photograph, unbelievable.” (http://canadiancrown.gc.ca/eng/1336579543289 - the picture is not in the 60 at the link but I believe this is the picture he spoke of when The Queen met them in 1971 in British Columbia shortly after Pierre and Margaret were married. http://www.vancouversun.com/technolo...141/story.html )

I mentioned seeing him on TV with Gordon Pinsent after they rec’d their awards and the two of them speaking about the monarchy and The Queen. Gordon said, “Beverly and I, our parents were very much into the Royal family. The Queen does such a wonderful job for a woman her age.” I said, “she’s very much like you, always on the go, doing something.” He replied with a laugh, “we always like to stay prepared.”

I asked about the empty weeks with no tour dates in the upcoming September tour and he said, “we’re heading south of the border as we always have and always will.” He had a piece of paper with the schedule and read it off to me.
He mentioned B.B.King’s Theatre as their first New York date coming up and that “it’s a wonderful place that seats about 600 people and of course it’s just packed. We’ve already done it and it’s quite fun.” He said if they were able to book Avery Fisher Hall they would. “We’ve done Town Hall, we’ve done Carnegie Hall, and a number of engagements at Lincoln Centre in the past.” “Then we go upriver to Tarrytown, from there we go to Cleveland, then Charleston West Virginia, Toledo Ohio, Peoria Illinois, Rockford Illinois, Manistee Michigan which is a casino, I don’t really know where that is, but we get into some of these markets, we’ve got no problem at all, they have old converted theatres, … Cincinnati, that’s a nice one, we’ve got the nice ones in here and the ones that are a little bit more challenging, Paducah Kentucky, Bowling Green apparently is a great one, Newberry South Carolina, Fayetteville North Carolina, then I fly back to Toronto as soon as I’m finished in Fayetteville on the 30th of September. The whole thing is done, 17 days and 14 shows. ( 7 states) I asked if there would be any west coast/California dates and he said, ”no, then we come back to our families, we’ll have some other things, smaller things, I do things that people never hear about, probably we’ll take the month of October down, and just work our way into Massey, probably rehearsing three or four times.”

I asked him about the reno work planned for Massey Hall and future Massey dates after this November. If construction is still ongoing that might run into May 2014 and if he runs on his 18 month schedule for appearing there. He said, “we’re going to do that in November 2014, we’re going to go for two years between Massey dates but I found out that they’re probably not even going to be started two years from now possibly. We might have to wait for another couple of years before they start but I would not say that’s the gospel, but you know that’s the internet. If it came to the point we couldn’t do it we’d go to Roy Thompson, or we’d go to The Elgin Theatre or we’d go to The Molson Amphitheatre.” When he mentioned the amphitheatre I said, “oh no! don’t do that!” and he burst out laughing. (I don’t care for the venue altho it is a nice location right on the shore of the lake) He said, “don’t worry about that.” I told him I hated the place and he said it was a horrible place to get in and out of. “We’d do a smaller place where we could do three or four shows, that’s what makes it fun, so we could do better each night as we go along.” I mentioned Convocation Hall at the U. of T., where I have seen Kris Kristofferson perform, would be a nice place too. He said that would be fun, an interesting place.

I asked him if he’d do another full show at Mariposa and he said, ”they asked me if I would do it, my guitar was in the trunk of the car, and I didn’t even decide to do it until after I talked to Jann. I wanted to talk to Jann. I wanted to talk to Jann first before, so I could give her a heads up and let her know what was going on. But she was just so gracious, she was thrilled by the idea and as it turned out all I did was do a couple of ballads. I did RESTLESS and then I did the Bob Dylan song RING THEM BELLS and then I was off there. I got a great reception. I told him there’s a very, very good quality video online of him singing Ring Them Bells. He said he just had a mic and plugged into a direct box. He said he knew they were getting it all down and “you gotta remember that, everything’s doing down for posterity everywhere you go.”

That led me to ask about fans videotaping and taking pictures during the concerts and what his thoughts about that were. He said, “no I don’t mind, what am I gonna do? Walk up and say ‘hey, don’t do that? Ya just let it roll, let it go.” I told him that the longtime fans didn’t have video cameras for the concerts 30-40 years ago so we’re making up for it now knowing that one day you’re going to say to hell with this, I’m not doing it anymore and we’re just trying to grab what we can. He said “yeah, that’s right. That’s how it’s done, it just goes on, carries on year after year, it’s all good.”

“I was very thrilled to receive the Songwriters award, it was a wonderful show, a wonderful evening but I wasn’t able to stick around long because I had to leave for Ottawa to play the next night at The National Arts Centre. We got in there and got it done, we were only there for about 5 or 6 hours altogether. We got the job done, we had a nice feeling on If You Could Read My Mind, that was the song we chose. We had Kenny Rogers doing the Gambler, we had Stevie Nicks doing a wonderful hit, and Ben E. King got the Towering Song award for Stand By Me, and they had a rap kid, very good, very smooth. It was just a wonderful show. And Steve Miller did SUNDOWN. Lyle Lovett was originally going to do it but he had some kind of a health issue going down in his family.” I told Gordon that Lyle would be in Toronto in a couple of weeks and he asked what venue he would be at. I told him @ Roy Thompson and he said ‘oh that’s a good spot.” “I wouldn’t mind playing Roy Thompson Hall at all if Massey was under renovation.” When I reminded him that he played there when it opened and he laughed and said, “I played there a couple of weeks ago!” “That was the third thing I did for the Queen’s medal.” When I told him I ran into Craig Kielburger (another recipient of the medal) at the Montreal airport the day after the show Gordon laughingly said he slept all that day! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Kielburger He said he did a solo and it was one of the biggest meet and greets he ever saw. (There were 600 people receiving the medal from an assortment of people prior to the entertainment portion of the gala) “It was nice, it was good.” “I didn’t have to get there until it was time for me to perform.” I laughed and said it was good he didn’t have to do the 600 person meet and greet. He laughed and said, “I already had my medal from the first engagement.”

I asked Gordon a question from Dave in Melbourne, Australia. Dave wondered if PERTH mentioned in Ecstasy Made Easy was referring to Perth, Australia. (there is a Perth, Ontario but it’s highly unlikely he was singing about it)
(I hope I never lose what belongs to me
By the right of my birth
At midnight sailing out of Perth
Getting under way we turned 'er westward bound
On that southern sea to see what ecstasy was worth)
When I mentioned the song title and before I could say “Perth” Gordon jumped in and said, “midnight sailing out of Perth! Well I sailed all around Perth harbour one time at midnight. I went on a sailing trip with a professional sailing crew so we didn’t have to do anything. All we had to do was get on board and let them do the driving. We were out for about an hour and a half cruising around Perth harbour.

I asked Gordon if there were any awards he would like to get considering he has almost everything there is to get and if he’s comfortable receiving all of these accolades. He laughed and replied, “I’m always busy working and staying prepared so I don’t have time to rest on my laurels too much.” “I do appreciate them and I’m beginning to appreciate them more and this latest one, this Songwriters award is a very important one. I feel very good about it.” I said, ‘there’s only three Canadians out of the almost 400 who have received the award.” Gordon said, “there’s Leonard Cohen, and myself and who’s the third?” I said I couldn’t’ remember and would have to look that info up. Gordon said, “they should put Bryan Adams in..Hey! They should put Stompin’ Tom Connors in!” I said that seeing Stompin’ Tom in Manhattan just might be worth a trip to New York and he laughed. http://www.stompintom.com/

When I inquired about the coming 2013 tour and if he would be out on the road when the annual January Lightfoot tribute shows would be at Hugh’s Room in Toronto he said, “I don’t know, I keep hearing about them and I’ve participated before.” I told him we all missed him last January. He said he had been talking about it at Mariposa. I know my dear David Newland was there performing and emceeing so I will see if he spoke to Gordon about the shows. http://www.davidnewland.com/ He added, “so I’m sure I’ll try to be there.” I said, “that would be great and I know that it means a lot to the performers and to Jory when you do show up regardless if you perform or not. They are going to take the show on the road to Hamilton and Guelph, Meaford and Ottawa besides the four nights at Hugh’s.” He laughed and said, “Wow you guys are gonna go on tour!” I said, “I’ll just be going to the Hugh’s Room shows, I can’t be travelling around like that. I can’t follow you and them too.” He replied, “I’ll just be doing Hugh’s also.” LOL. I told him that Jory has a new CD coming out in November and he said he’d keep a look out for it. http://www.jorynash.com/home.cfm http://hughsroom.com/

We talked about practicing the guitar and how calloused the ends of his fingers can get. He said you have to wait for them to chip off, you have to work around them, you can’t file them off, can’t chew them off, you just have to leave them till they’re ready to go. When they’re ready to go they’re like little mounds and the strings start slipping off the fingers when you’re pressing down.” I asked him if that was painful and he said, “no those days are gone, we used to play all night. A couple of times I played until sunup with Jerry Jeff Walker.” I laughed and said, “that was in a different time Gordon.” After he laughed he said, ‘you’re not kidding!”

Default Re: #3 CHat with CHar and Lightfoot

I asked Gordon if he had any goals left other than to continue touring and do the best job he can onstage. His reply was, “I want to leave a clean campsite, that’s my goal.” “I have a very large family.”
When we spoke about the big spread in age of his grandchildren (Ingrid has a son and daughter in their early/mid 20’s and Fred has 2 young children) he explained by saying, “Ingrid got married early and Fred got married late.” And I then asked, “are you going to get married late again?” He chuckled and said, “No, no I have no plans.”

I asked him about the cast on his hand back in 1970 @ Mariposa and he said, “it just occurred in accident.” I said it must have been worrisome for him to have a broken hand and he answered, “well it got better.” Lol
I also asked him if he remembered what tunes he played @ Mariposa 1972 when it was held on Toronto Island. He was sitting under a tree playing for a few people who had gathered around. It was the Mariposa that Dylan and Neil Young showed up at as well. (Dave Bidini writes about it and the year 1972 in his book “Writing Lightfoot”) http://davebidini.ca/ Gordon said he doesn’t remember what tunes he played but he remembers the day. He said Neil played in the afternoon at a workshop. He and Dylan didn’t perform, but he thought he might have done it the year before. They took it from Orillia to the island for 3 or 4 years. He said, “before that they had it at the old Maple Leaf baseball stadium.” I told him I remembered going to ballgames there as a kid. Gordon said he did a workshop with Mississippi John Hurt, the old blues guy, at a Mariposa festival. Then he mentioned the Reverend Gary Davis. He said, “my guitar player at the time was David Rea. He got to know Reverend Gary Davis and he practiced with him for about two days, non-stop. Davis never missed a lick either. It was a great learning experience for David. He passed away last year. A great guitar player.” http://davidreamusic.com/ http://reverendgarydavis.com/bio.html

I brought up how Carter is a fantastic player as well. Gordon replied. “that goes without saying!” “He’s actually getting better! I’m having something done to one of my guitars right now, a compensated saddle put on it and he’s getting a different type of electric. Not THAT much different, same type of guitar, it’s a solid body guitar he’s using there, that he’s working with. You’re going to see a hollow body guitar, same make, Gretsch Country Gentleman.” http://www.gretsch.com/ I said that Carter is having a great time up there playing and Gordon said, ‘well I don’t move around much up there but there’s still a lot of action going on. I told him that back in the day I used to be aware of only him onstage but now I see the interactions amongst the guys and with him during the songs and breaks, even if he did call them ‘his aggravations’ in Ottawa.. LOL. Gordon laughed and said, “I swear I went and said it again the next night!”

And once again I brought up the topic of him writing a book, perhaps one about his music, the influences behind specific songs, the sort of book he could write while he’s sitting out on the front porch. Gordon replied, “well, I don’t know, I would like to get the time to do that.” “I’ll tell you when Anne Murray wrote her book it took her two years to do it.” I told him I had it and read it and he said he read it too and said it’s an excellent book. “She’s one of our real stars, one of our real superstars.” I said I was never fortunate enough to see her perform live in concert and he told me he had seen her three or four times. I mentioned to him that it seems Anne now spends all of her time golfing. He said he didn’t blame her because she’s probably quite good at it. I asked, “you used to golf didn’t you?” and he said, “yeah but I had to give it up, it was interfering with my songwriting. I’m serious, I’d be writing a song and somebody would want to go golfing with me and I’d have to say sorry I can’t make it today, I’m working on a tune.”

I delved into the subject of songwriting, knowing he’s not going to record any longer but with all of the topical things going on in the world in politics, wars, social issues and the like does he ever just take pen to paper and scribble down some thoughts/lyrics? He said, “I’m not getting any younger and I’m concentrating on the shows, really I am, but it would be something more whimsical.” I replied that, “I just wondered if, as a songwriter, does it strike you to write things down regardless of whether it will turn into a song or be recorded.” He said, “yeah it does but it’s too isolating, I can’t afford to be like that, the obligations are completed, I’ve made twenty albums so I don’t have to make any more albums for anybody.”

I replied, “no you don’t, and those twenty albums have certainly stood the test of time and been a tribute to how you’ve performed and the integrity that you feel toward songwriting and excellence. You can pull those old albums off the shelf and play them and it’s just magic every time. That’s the legacy, the perfection that these albums have that you have put out. I never thought when I was a kid when I first went to see you at Massey Hall that today on my birthday when I’m turning 57..” Gordon then jumped in with a loud “ahhhh! Aha, Happy Birthday!!!” and I continued, “I started seeing you when I was 14 or so and that all these years later that I’d be talking to on my birthday and still seeing your concerts and travelling to see you, I guess I’m close to 100 concerts by now over all of those years. It’s fascinating that you are still out there singing these songs and performing and being the artist that you are.” Gordon said, “it’s a passion!” I then told him, “it’s a passion for your fans that come to your shows. You know so many of us that travel around to see you and come constantly to Massey that you probably think to yourself when you see me, “oh my god it’s her again!”.lol He laughed and said “oh no..no, no, no way..” I replied, “I’m glad to hear that because I worry that one day you’re going to say “why are you here again?!” He was laughing and said, “I just wade into those meet and greets!” I said, “it amazes me how you come out after a show and you’re so generous and polite and kind and interested what people have to say. I’m sure you could just …” and Gordon interjected with, “that’s where the training comes in!” LOL

Wrapping up our CHat, I then told him, “it’s a huge honour for me to talk to you after concerts and for you to phone me again Gordon. I so appreciate your time in calling me and making this birthday very special.”

“I’ll see you down the road Gord, take care of yourself, bye.”

“alright CHar!, Bye.”

And so ended the Gordon Lightfoot CHat with CHar #3. And still so many topics and questions yet to discuss..lol.

I’m looking forward to CHat #4 down the road..

Wow. Awesome. Thanks for this this Char (and thanks for asking The Man about California). I can always hope he'll put some cities (preferably SoCal) on his concert list.

Great post. Thanks again. MaryO

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Char, for that wonderful interview and for asking Gord my question about Perth in the lyrics of "Ecstasy Made Easy". So it WAS Australia's Perth and it WAS a voyage he actually made (around midnight). I assume it was during his only Australian concert tour (1974), because he has said before that he never enjoyed travelling to such distant places and I can't imagine he would visit Australia outside a concert tour. Perth was the one place on that tour where he performed more than one concert (Sep23 and 24, sandwiched between Adelaide Sep22 and Brisbane Sep26). So the sailing may have been straight after a concert or on his night off on Sep25. Perth doesn't have a saltwater harbour. The city centre is on the Swan River and the river meets the sea (Indian Ocean) about 12 miles west at Fremantle, which has no sizeable harbour. I imagine that a night-time sightseeing voyage would not bother going beyond Fremantle, because there would be nothing out there to see. But the river sights, fresh air and water cruise must have been therapeutic for Gord and his entourage in the middle of a hectic flying tour around this continent.

By the way, it's great reading an interview of Gord by someone who has closely followed his career (including the most recent years) and is not on a media company's payroll. Your questions and feedback are original and of great interest to his biggest fans. Gord trusts you completely and his responses are natural, relaxed and heartfelt. Congratulations!

My sentiments exactly Dave.

Your post is a wonderful one.

I've read Char's interview over several times in order to try and come up with something poignant to say but I could not top the way you put it out there.

Our Charbelle sure is a special gal.

Big hugs Char!

RJ.

Exceedingly well;put Dave
Yes well maybe he had a girlfriend in Perth
This quetsion about Gord's use of place names in his songs reminded me of when I asked Gord about the "London lady"' in Let It Ride see my earlier posting at
http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showpost.p...48&postcount=2
I followed that up by displaying the plaque at Gord's London addrrss

which I displayed in my posting at
