Blue Rodeo Live at Massey Hall
Blue Rodeo is a well known band here in Canada. Not so well known in the US unfortunately. They just released a cd / dvd combo of a concert at Massey Hall last winter. The cd features an acoustic set they did for the first half of their Massey shows. It is outstanding and I highly recommend it.
The Lightfoot connection is this. The two singers and songwriters in the band are Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. They are both huge Lightfoot fans.
For their 20th anniversary as a band Keelor wrote an article in Toronto's Globe and Mail about how the band started. He and Cuddy were in NYC trying to get something started. Keelor bought a cassette of Gord's Gold, felt homesick and was shocked that he didn't even own an acoustic guitar. He fixed that, dragged Cuddy back home to Toronto and they formed Blue Rodeo. The first song Cuddy learned on the guitar was For Lov'n Me. Those of you that have seen the Much More Music concert that Gord did will recall Gord pointing him out in the audience. I also saw Cuddy with Barry Harvey at Gord's first comeback concert at Hamilton Place.
They are an awesome band and am willing to bet that if you enjoy Gord's music you will enjoy theirs!

Re: Blue Rodeo Live at Massey Hall
Yes, and you have also turned me into a Ron Sexsmith fan, as well.
Of course, Gordon Lightfoot will always be my number one, favorite, Canadian artist of all time.
It must be something in the water up there So much talent

Re: Blue Rodeo Live at Massey Hall
oh yeah, also a GL connection with their Go Go Round tribute version
I can't find it on youtube or a fee mp3 download
imo:
GL is Canada's artist
BR is Canada's band (i think BNL fell out of the running this year, lol)
Keelor is the spiritual and creative one (this is a real fave from CBCs good ole, Ear to the Ground special)
Cuddy is THE voice
together they blend nicely and can also rock (this kicks in at about 2:00)
this is the video that inspired me to get into messin' with video
i gotta play this tune whenever i'm driving along the lake in the oshawa area...it was shot there, on the bluffs near char's neck of the woods
i heard a new Massey live cut of an old tune (Know Where You Go) on the radio the other day...very nice mix
bluerodeo.com is a great fan community...rabid women, lol

Re: Blue Rodeo Live at Massey Hall
Well, you guys are puttin' a smile on my face tonight.
jj, that live version of Dark Angel is amazing! I love that song very much but I think I like this version even better than the original.
Greg Keelor's voice is beautiful on this...I love it very much.
Yes, I agree...he is a very deep thinker and his lyrics are inspiring and introspective.
I love many of his songs just for that reason.
Jim Cuddy is adorable and talented. I love Bad Timing, it was one of the first BR songs that I went and listened to. I have the cd that it's on now.
Hasn't Hit Me Yet....great song. I love it very much. Glad it inspired you to work with video...it inspired me to sing along...lol.
Jesse Joe, I love Five Days In May...that was the first BR cd that I bought.
There is a lot of great music on that cd, my Canadian friend
Char, I hope Santa brings you what you ask for. It sounds great and I might be asking for one of those, too.

ahh, i have family and friends who were there for that taping...what a interesting show...the studio version of Dark Angel is where many of the masses were first introduced to Sarah Mclachlan's "oooos"....she and her Blur Rodeo pals had a great time creating the 5 Days CD...anyhow, i prefer this acoustic guitar version also
you would probably like some of the other early archives that Blue rodeo released on DVD for their fans...I mentioned it in and old thread that was supposed to lead to a Gord archive bootleg wish list, but the thread basically plummeted ...however, no offense taken, lol

btw...i took some sister's in law to see Blue Rodeo live at Massey a few years ago and got tix in the balcony on purpose so they could check out the Massey ambience and crowd frenzy a bit better....later i asked how they liked it...one said "sounded really good...but i can't believe how old they look!...we make the trek to downtown Toronto and here we are watching old guys"
i thought, yeah, gee, they must be over 50 ...and i guess won't bother asking them if they want to join me back here in a few months to see Gord, lol

Re: Blue Rodeo Live at Massey Hall
no worries, that was a few years ago...and I ended up sitting beside you at the next GL gig, lol
i think they're in their 40's but like many of the gals i work with, it's the boy toys that turn their heads...i should get them Backstreet boys tix....actually they're 'old' now too aren't they? lol
but back to BR, i think Keelor looks healthier than ever these days, and Cuddy will look like a skinny teen til his kids put him in a home
