I used to belong to a folk club at my school back in the early 70's and we used to sing a play Gordon Lightfoot songs which were always the most popular songs to learn. I am trying to find the words to a song called "Whisky on a Sunday." Looking through Gordon's catalogue, I cannot see it but wonder if anyone could tell me who wrote it. Great website tho''

The Irish Rovers have performed 'Whiskey on a Sunday' on several of their albums. Sorry, don't know who wrote it nor do I know all the words.

The website www.irishsongs.com. has the lyrics. The site is called "Irish songs by Donal O'Shaugnessy" but the author and copywrite date are blank, so I assume O'Shaugnessy recorded a version, but isnt the writer. It might be, like so many Irish favorites, an uncredited folksong.
The lyrics according to the website are as follows:
CHORUS
Come day go way, I wish in my heart it was Sunday, drinkin' buttermilk through the week and whiskey on a Sunday.
He sits on the corner by an ould beggar's bush atop of an ould packing crate.
He's got three wooden dolls who can dance and sing and he sits with a smile on his Face.

CHORUS

His tired ould hands tug away on the strings, the puppets they dance up and down.
Its a far better show than you will ever see in the fanciest theatre in town
CHORUS

I'm sad to relate that ould Sad Davie died in nineteeen hundred and four
his three wooden dolls in the dustbin are laid their songs will be heard never more CHORUS

Some dark stormy night should your passin' that way and the winds blowin' up from the sea you can still hear the voice of ould Sad Davie
as he sings to his dancin' dolls three.
CHORUS

~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope that helped,
Erica
