hey, Gord H, there are stacks of them in most post offices in the GTA and imagine in your SW neck of the woods - the mags, stamps, etc seem about as limited as an Upper Deck issue, lol, for now anyhow

char, been here, there and everywhere (except your shrine)...have great bday and travel safe, we're overdue, i'll be here in envy missing GL (genius envy), am sure it'll be more heart warming than Live Earth and probably more tear jerking for me than the Di, Duran, etc concert but I did enjoy the wee home movie segment...please ask Gord next Char Intimate & Interactive if he has old 8mm home movies to share someday (and ask him if he knows what a font is, i doubt it and doubt he care a less, lol)

RM, yes it's all yours, but your stuff is appealingly appealing! hey, when you finally get your parcel, don't be surprised if I use up all my airbrushed Anka stamps on it

when online in spurts, i youtube in solitude, i'm such a raw video fiend and into slew of post production stuff...love some of the odd links folks have shared, thank you, thank you

RJ, thinking of you and Eileen...so fortunate i had chance to chat with Joe at some length by phone...we can all only wish to have a friend speak as warmly of us, as did Joe speak of you..looking forward to catching up, truly

folks, that was some Toni Tenille(sp?) post, i know i'm a bit behind that that read lingers so nicely...some of these celeb types don't seem half bad

for some reason used to get my deepest sleep when loud old water softener came on but it busted last week, so now suffering insomnia til new Maytag guy shows up (think the old one retired with Barker)

ok, sorry to blog in the GL stamp thread - be well all

Err Umm register as I did and you might then get a copy,as I did but not necessarily the one with Gord on the cover. Possibly if you registered 4 times or more using other names and addresses you might end up with a complete set, or if you are quick a Vancouver Ebay seller has just put a Gord one up for auction or a "Buy It Now" price of US $9.99 plus shipping

hmmmm. having gone thru some mags I haven't read it seems I do receive the DETAILS mag as well as COLLECTIONS from CanPost. The July issue hasn't come yet. ()it's a quarterly mag. The one I have is Apr. to June/07.
I posted an envelope to myself with the new Lightfoot stamp affixed at the post office on Yonge St. on Saturday June 30. It would have entered the postal system on Wed.July 3 because the 2nd was a statutory holiday due to July 1 (Canada Day) falling on Sunday. I have yet to receive my mail..I live 30 miles east of Toronto..

While the stamp may look great it doesn't move the mail any faster..

John, I too signed up at the Canada Post web site when the stamp was originally announced. This week - about 4 weeks after I signed up - I received my package. And guess which cover I got?

Don't mean to rub it in. Well, not much anyway.

I received my package today, with my favorite item being the Lightfoot postcard.

I guess the language barrier is for real....

My address is on East Orange Grove.

The package was mailed to East HORNS Grove.

it's the photo used on the stamp without his name on his forehead... his name is in the bottom right corner. the top right corner has lines like grooves in an album.
the back has the pre-printed stamp with the same image..
i don't see it listed for sale at the website tho:

And now on Ebay
  • This is a two-sided display ( same on both sides) for the new Canadian stamp honoring Gordon Lightfoot.
  • It measures about 4-1/2" x 9-1/2" and is made to fit in a slot on the post office's cash register.
  • Lightfoot's pic folds out to show a picture of the set of stamps.

I was in my local post office a couple of days ago and I noticed a magazine with Lightfoot's picture plasturing the front of it. Naturally, I took it and later found out that it was a "details" magazine from Canada Post for which you can order stamps not available through a post office. Turns out you can order a souviner sheet with or without a colourful background, a set of four booklets, and postcards with the four featured artists on them. The magazine comes with a order form for which you can use to order to unpublic items. hurry tp your local post office to pick up of these much anticipated items!

I had the stamps on my birthday wish list, and received them on Friday. I'm contemplating getting one set framed along with the larger picture of Gord. Lucky me!

As a person who has admired Gordon for over three decades I think we are a lucky group. What a special honor for Gordon and I feel like we all get to share that honor with him.

Happy birthday formerlylavender.

Yes, those stamps are as awesome as Gordon Lightfoot is. :D

Thanks, Dream Street Rose. Last year we attended the Gord concert the night before my birthday in Vienna, VA, so it's hard to top that one. The stamps are awesome though, I agree.

Default Canada Post Posters of Lightfoot stamp

When the CanPost stamps "Living Legends" came out earlier this year I made a few phone calls and the local post office here in town agreed to hold all four window posters for me. I picked them up today. Omygoodness...they are lovely..about 22 x 28 inches and on heavy cardstock. I got all four posters and will have the Lightfoot one framed asap..

A mention of Lightfoot :

Beware the check in the mail

By Joe Garcia
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 30, 2007 12:00 AM
The check is in the mail.

How many times have we heard that one?

In a world of e-mails, cellphones and text messaging, we know that U.S. mail nowadays translates into a world of bills, credit-card offers and miscellaneous junk mail.

I haven't received a handwritten letter in ages - other than from my friend Kirk in Washington state. (OK, Kirk, I still owe you a letter.)

So imagine my surprise when there really was a check in the mail.

My lucky day.

I could tell immediately that this correspondence was special. The envelope had a Canadian stamp with a bright yellow flower. I would have preferred a commemorative Gordon Lightfoot stamp, but my disappointment was temporary as I tore open the envelope and there was a letter congratulating me - accompanied by a check.

The check was for $2,980.39. It had my name and address typed right above the "Pay to the order of" line: "Two-thousand Nine Hundred Eighty and 39 Cents."

But get this: The check is just to cover "both the administrative payment and clearance fees for your winnings."

That's right. I'd struck it rich.

Actually, I had come in third in the Mega lottery held on July 20, "in which your name was drawn randomly," the letter explained. For my third-tier winner status, I had won $250,000.

Wow. Should I quit my job or just take a long vacation? I've always wanted to visit Sweden and Alaska - and, what the heck, fly my Lear jet to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun, like in that Carly Simon song.

Dang, I wish I had won first place.

But don't look a gift horse in the mouth, as my father used to tell me (although, as a small boy, I used to think he was saying, "Don't look a deaf horse in the mouth," and I'd just nod like I knew what he was talking about because in a twisted way, it sort of made sense to me).

I examined the check carefully. It had an authorized signature. It had a check number in the right corner and that computerized check routing number on the bottom. The check face was multicolor to prevent fraud and had "a simulated watermark" that can best be seen at a 45-degree angle and a special certification mark on the back, again, to prevent fraud.

"It's a real check all right," I said.

Forget the casino. Apparently you've got a better chance of winning by just opening up your mailbox. And whoever said about the lottery that "you can't win if you don't play" apparently never won the Mega lottery.

"Losers," I said under my breath. My name was randomly drawn and I didn't even have to buy a ticket.

All I had to do was call the toll-free number (although $250,000 richer, I could certainly afford a long-distance call) and give them my claim number along with some other information so they could validate the cheque and begin the authorisation process.

Waitaminute. What kind of a scam is this, I thought, that spells "check" and "authorization" like the Brits? Then I remembered the Canadian stamp. It must have been Canada's Mega lottery I won, although the letterhead was from a financial trust company in Minneapolis, and the check was issued by a bank in La Marque, Texas.

Everything seemed legit. After all, the check was for $2,980.39. If it had been a round number, say, $3,000.00, my Spidey senses would have been tingling, warning me of danger.

I called the 800 number and the message asked that I leave a message and phone number. I called several times, but got the same message every time. Then I called the state Attorney General's Office.

"You didn't cash the check, did you?" I was immediately asked.

Well, no, I said.

"Good, it's a scam."

Actually, I knew it was a scam. Nobody sends you money for nothing through the mail. It doesn't happen. It doesn't matter if you're praying for a financial miracle to get you out of a jam or just figure you're due for some good luck after a long string of back luck.

It just doesn't happen. Even if you play the lottery and actually win big, you'll have to go to the lottery offices to fill out a bunch of forms and get your check.

Everything else - other than pretending to not know it was a scam - in this column is true. I wanted to illustrate how easy it is to be fooled by scammers, especially if you're desperate or not quite thinking straight for whatever reason.

Millions of Americans are scammed every year.

The check is in the mail?

No, the check is in the shredder, where it belongs.

Default Canada Post Yearbook of 2007 Stamps

I've rec'd a most beautiful hardcover book from Canada Post today. It is black and the cover has the stamps issued in 2007 on the front and back. the removable cover of the book is black as well and imprinted to look like an old 45 record complete with the cutout for the record player peg that the 45 slips onto. Another slip of paper over that is shaped like a guitar and sayd "The High Note - Canada's 2007 stamps and the stories behind them. This guitar part sits at the bottom of the page and the back of it is a full page with some pics of the stamps as well and what is inside. The Feature Story is :Four Living Legends who've been in the spotlight of the Canadian recording industry.

Inside are some superb pictures of all four artists with each being given 4 pages with text and photos included.

The other stamps issued during the year are all beautiful as well - Endangered species, Canadian flowers, Beneficial insects, National Parks, Lilac blooms, architecture, The Queen, 150th anniv.of Otta becomiing ur capital, George Vancouver who sailed with Captain James Cook in 1774, Chief Membertou at Port Royal commemorating French settlement in Canada, World Cup Soccer in 2007 held in Canada, Santa's steeds is of a reindeer against the aurora borealis, the 2007 Year of the Pig, symbols of Christmas - the manger scene representing Hope, the white dove for peace and a trumpeting angel as a symbol for Joy.
All are exquisite and each section has the actual stamp in clear acetate along the descriptions. It's a beautiful, beautiful book.

from the CanPost site:
Product Number: 341751

Product Description: 2007 COLLECTION CANADA (NPC)
Product Details: The beautiful Collection Canada 2007 brings Canada’s stamps to life through engaging essays, breathtaking photographs and exquisite illustrations. This distinctly Canadian collectible showcases all 52 stamps (with a face value of $32.39) issued in 2007 and places them in a broad cultural context spanning history, personalities and events. A truly unique gift!

This is what it says as an intro to the True Canadian Legends:
(all text is in French as well)
Today, the phenomenon of Canadian musical artists selling millions of records around the world is nothing new. Thanks to superstars, such as SHania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Nickelback, Barenaked Ladies, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Diana Krall, Celine Dion, and Natalie McMaster, Canadian singers, songwriters and musicians are enjoying an unprecedented level of fame and fortune both at home and on the international stage.

But Canadian music didn't always have so large a piece of the global spotlight. During the first half of the last century, almost all of the records sold in Canada came from overseas or south of the border.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, however, a change swept over the Canadian musical landscape. A handful of performers appeared whose drive, amibtion and sheer talent were simply to obig to escape international notice. Many of these artists got their start singing at talent shows, clubs and coffee houses, but it wasn't long before they were playing to sold-out audiences in concert halls throughout the world.

Their achievements paved the way to international; success for both the Canadian music industry and the current crop of Canadian suprstars. In the process, these pioneering artists also earned millions of fans, numerous gold and platinum records - and a place among the true legends of music history.

To reflect the musical legacy of these Canadian superstars, the four commemorative stamps were designed in the style of album covers, while the souvenir sheet was created to mimic a CD. The stamps were released on June 29, 2007.
(The souvenir sheet is displayed in an acetate pocket.)

Gordon Lightfoot
Printed on black paper is a head shot of him performing in Toronto in 1976. It is printed in a soft bluish/grey tone. His head is slightly turned and it is shot from below, directly in front of the microphone. His eyes are closed. His hair is lit from above and looks like a halo.
The opposite page has 4 images down the centre - the cover of Old Dan's records - 1972, a mustache only/b&w of him 1972, the cover of the May 1978 Macleans magazine and the cover of Canadian Composer magazine of Fall 1990.
The text runs on either side of the pictures - one side English, one side French.

To many Canadians, Gordon Lightfoot is the voice of Canada. His songs about miners, love gone astray and ships lost at sea recount the stories of our country, our history and our lives. His crooning style, deeply textured lyrics and troubadour's soul have made him one of the most familiar and beloved Canadian performers of the past 100 years.

Born in Orillia, Ontario on November 17, 1938, Lightfoot began singing on local radio stations and at small festivals when he was still just a boy. He enjoyed some early success in his native country and as a host of "The Country and Western Show" on BBC Television in England. But it wasn't until late 1964 that he was inspired by performers such as Bob Dylan, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, and Simon and Garfunkle to record his first solo album of folk music.
The rest, as they say, is history. Of the album's 13 tracks, five became hit singles. His song "For Lovin' Me" was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, Johnny Cash and more than 100 other entertainers, bringing his work and words to an even broader audience.

Next page has a blue-tone image of him singing at the Live 8 concert in Barrie, Ontario on July 2, 2005.

Legends and Milestones
Has sold millions of albums over a career spanning six decades.

Hit songs include "Canadian Railroad Trilogy," "Early Morning Rain," "Alberta Bound," "Sundown," "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "The Last Time I Saw Her," "Don Quixote," and "Beautiful"

Has had songs recorded by more than 500 other artists, including more than 100 versions of "For Lovin' Me" and "If You Could Read My Mind"

Has received 11 Juno Awards, four Grammy Award nominations, and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award.

Appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Inducted into the Canadian Country Music, Canadian Broadcast, Canadian Songwriters, Canadian Railway, Canadian Music, and Juno halls of Fame, as well as Canada's Walk of Fame and the Canadian Folk Music Walk of Fame.

Declared the Canadian Male Recording Artist of the Decade (1970s) in a nationwide survey.

Last page has another strip of 4 pics down the middle:
Receiving one of 4 Juno awards in 1977; performing in Toronto in 1999 (Live and Interactive/Much Music TV show); at Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto in 1998; and in Toronto in 2000.

Virtually overnight, Lightfoot went from a struggling unknown to an internationally renowned singer and songwriter earning upwards of $1,000.00 a gig.

When the public appetite for folk music began to flag, Lightfoot successfully made the transition to pop and country, becoming one of the most popular Canadian singers of the 1960s and 1970s. His hit single, "If You Could Read My Mind," sold over a million copies and reached number three on the U.S. charts. In January 1974, his album SUNDOWN reached number one on the charts in both the United States and Canada.

Perhaps most tellingly, Lightfoot's star has never seemed to wane. While the recordings of many of his contemporaries have long since faded into silence, the songs of Gordon Lightfoot are still cherished by legions of loyal fans - many of whom weren't even born when their musical hero first climbed his way to the top of the charts.

Today, Gordon Lightfoot continues to sing the songs of Canada, in a voice that is as deep, rich and thrilling as ever - and as familiar to many of us as our own.
