John Ford Coley?

I was recently at a website,

which states that John Ford Coley has played along with Gord somewhere, somehow. Anyone have any knowledge of when this was?

John Ford Coley had partnered up with Dan Seals - they apparently played heavy metal (opened for Zeppelin once?) and then shifted over to more 'Gord-like' stuff, so I could see it... but never read anything about it. The gist of the list seems to be that he accompanied Gord on stage at some time...


I'm not a big John Ford Coley fan, but any duo that can be adept enough and versatile enough to open for Zeppelin AND make it on their own in the soft-rock genre certainly gets my attention!

Maybe they are referring to a radio broadcast where their records were played together??
Otherwise I have never heard of Gord doing concerts with other arists other than a few "opening acts" long ago like Leona Boyd
and The Good Brothers in Hamilton in November 2004 and various multi-artist charity shows over the years plus the famous one
in 1977 with Harry Chapin and Waylon Jennings:-

Once again,I kinda feel i was born just a tad too late. It's such a bummer that I'll never get to see John Denver & Harry Chapin. I must see James Taylor before it's too late!

I seem to recall England Dan and John Ford Coley opened for Gordon at Blossom Music Center (near Akron, Ohio). I think it was the summer of '76 or '77.

Wayne has it that that concert was on July 20th,1976 but unfortunately there is no review or setlist to prove that your memory is fantastic and accurate.If you went does your memory recall that ED and JFC were there?

"Dan Seals, the brother of Jim Seals of equally successful 1970s soft-rock duo Seals & Crofts"
and:-
"Seals' childhood nickname was "England Dan" because he was a huge fan of the Beatles. John Colley's last name was shortened to "Coley" for ease of pronunciation; "Ford" was added as his middle name for flow purposes, thus England Dan and John Ford Coley"
and I had always wondered what the significence of the "England" was

That is pretty interesting stuff. I'm wondering if anyone has that CD from the Hunger Benefit concert? I would love to get my hands on a copy. Was it a concert and a CD or just the CD?

Well presumably Suzi has a copy and no doubt another copy resides on one Of Gord's shelves in his collection of concert recordings.It would be a nice touch to issue it as a charity fund raiser as there always seems to be an area of the world in dire need of more food

"both" are worth reading in part they tell you that
"The concert consisted of Lightfoot, James Taylor, Harry Chapin and John Denver doing acoustic sets backed only by Terry Clements.
Lightfoot and Denver sang a moving, harmonized rendition of "Irish Lullaby" in salute to Bing Crosby who had died the week before and they were rewarded with an extended standing ovation for their efforts. Another top highlight of Lightfoot's set was an acoustic rendition of "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."

I attended the Lightfoot-Chapin-Jennings concert at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York, I believe it was 1977. I was 24 years old It was fantastic. The venue is giantic, but I was able to afford seats only a few rows up in the center on the side [the Coliseum is round] Tickets were probably around $14.00 at that time. The best seats were on the floor right in front of the stage. The place was packed. I will never forget that night- Gord and Harry[a Long Island native, I'm proud to say] together on stage! I'm embarassed to say that at that time I never heard of Waylon Jennings before that night. I remember they had a red light center stage that blinked every few seconds that signified someone dying from starvation somewhere in the world. It really made you think [and be grateful for what you have]. The night was also special because I treated my youngest brother, Billy, to his first concert. He was a Chapin fan. Really not that much into Gord although he always heard his music around the house playing off the family stereo in the basement of our home[thanks to moi (:] and when I played Lightfoot on my guitar [I am very rusty now. Haven't picked up a guitar in years, but that's another story]. I was a little concerned as there was a good amount of marijuana smoking around us. A couple years later my brother became a Meatloaf fan. I like Meatloaf [the artist (;].
I think he has a fantastic voice and I enjoy several of his songs. He also had an interesting life. I don't know if my brother became a MJ fan too. Anyway, I'm getting off track here. I was so proud of Gord joining the other two for such a worthy cause. The crowd was wild but not so you couldn't hear the music.At the end they sang a few of each other's hits together. That was my favorite part. I was delighted when I found the photo of that concert tour in the booklet for SONGBOOK. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it at the time that Gord autographed the booklet for me. Maybe I'll get a chance to have him sign it again right above that photo.

Sunday night on PBS,they re-ran a 70s music special where John Ford Coley (sans England Dan)came out and sang "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight".

He sang it well but without the harmony of the two,it lacked in "harmony" and was not as interesting.

I would of normally put this in the small talk section but with the talk about the both of them playing metal music and none of the articles saying this, I came across this on 1 of my other music groups and originally they started out in a Texas Psych band called Southwest FOB. I guess the group was known regeionally nationally known.


OK if you go to youtube and type of the band title you should be able to play it.
