Hi Everyone! I am a guitar player and was wondering if we had any others on this list who could share chords/tabs/etc for Gordon's songs. the chords on his page are basically "easy guitar" versions, and are seldom exactly what he played. I would love to see what others are playing compared to what I am. Plus, though I am usually really good at figuring stuff out by ear, the use of the 12-string and additional guitars makes it really hard sometimes. Right now I'm trying to figure out Mountains and Marian. The chords on his page are SOO not what he played. I alsohave a music book from like 1970 with the chords, which are also not right.

Thanks!

Ken

Ken,

Which page are you referring too? Wayne Francis' page?

It'll help to know which page you are referring too.

Mike,

I was referring to the http://www.lightfoot.ca/ page. Not sure who Wayne Francis is.

I take it by your screen name that you are a player?

Wayne is a fan in eastern Canada who owns and runs www.lightfoot.ca.

I can't help you with any guitar stuff but there's several talented folks here who can!

Bill, Cathy, Ron, Mike, Val, just to name a few...

Hi Ken. The songbook you refer to is most likely the same one I have as well. It's "Did She Mention My Name" and then in much bigger fancy sort of calligraphic style, the name "Lightfoot." I have it dated as 1968. "The Mountains and Marian" is a special song for me as it is my wife's name and yes we live here in the mountains of BC. There's more to the story but some other time. Anyway I'm not sure if I can provide much help because as you say, you're good at picking up stuff by ear and what's in the songbook is as close as I can come to it and I love playing along to the tunes and that one is clearly a Gibson B45 tune, and the one I have is my baby. Red Shea's style rings through clearly as well and I never tire listening to him crank it out. Gord doesn't seem to do this tune in his shows anymore these days. Another site I use although it doesn't have Mountains and Marian listed, at least not yet, but they keep adding his tunes to it, is called www.chordie.com. They also print out the actual chord formations so that makes it relatively simple. If I discover anything further I will post it for you here. Cheers, Ron J.

OK Ken,

Yes, I'm a player and for a long time.

I've found Wayne's chords to be right when I've chosen to use them. When I watch Gord play, say on the "Live at Reno" DVD, the chords match right up. I really can't answer for any of the books.

Since we've not met and I don't know how advanced a player you are, please allow me a couple of dumb questions:

Are you trying to pay along with recordings?

Are you using a capo, usually at the 2nd fret while you're playing?

If you answered YES to 1 and NO to 2, that may be your answer. Gord tends to always play 1 full tone up on the six and at the 2nd or 3rd fret on the 12-strings.

If those questions insulted you, it wasn't intended.

Please let me know a more specific question.

I don't play M and M much. Any other players that do, have any tips?

Mike,

Just wanted to second your opinion that the chords on Wanye Francis' site seem to be correct. Your points about capoing and playing along with the record are also good. If one is not in tune (or should I say the "intonation is incorrect") it can be frustrating.

I use to have that songbook, and I recall that it noted the need to capo up. However, there were some versions of his songbooks that were directed at piano, and although the formal "key" was correct, without the capo and correct fingering, it didn't sound the same.
