It's rather quiet today so I toss out this simple question. Anyone know what "stemming gold" means as in "See the drunkard in the tavern Stemming gold to make ends meet"?

I think we got the "techinical" explaination of where a figure of speech might have developed. And of coarse, a brief definition for "the man" himself....
