Hello, just wondering a few things about the song The Auctioneer. I checked the lyrics for it, and they didn't have the most important part: the auction speak! Does anyone know what that is? I know it's a fair amount to type, but it would be appreciated if you can either find an amended set of lyrics with that in there or type it. Also, when was the last time anyone can remember this song being done live. By the way, it's a song also originally recorded by Leroy Van Dike. One last thing: is this the most country that Gord ever gets? If there are other really country songs, then please point them out.
Thanks a lot.

"Redwood Hill" from SUMMER SIDE... , "You Are What I Am" from OLD DAN's... , & "Sweet Guinevere" off of ENDLESS WIRE come to mind when Gord's country stuff is mentioned.

Try 'Mama Said' on Songbook. Maybe GL didn't release it because it was too country. Great song!

The complete lyrics are on http://www.gordonlightfoot.com
Scroll down the left side to Albums/Songs and select songs. The song list is arranged in alphabetical order, so Auctioneer will be close to the top. It's best to listen to the song while looking at the lyrics, to try and get a sense of the rhythm.

"Alberta Bound" has a nice, "sitting on a hay bale in the bed of a pickup driving down a dirt road" feel to it

Ditto what Cathy said above about the site for the words to the Auctioneer-speak. Also, for some country flavor, consider the following:

(Remember Me) I'm the One;
It's Too Late, He Wins

Both of the above from the Songbook boxed set of early 60s Lightfoot when he sounded just like Jim Reeves (a country singer of the 50s and early 60s).

Also:

I Used To Be A Country Singer (from the Painter Passing Through cd)

There are many other Gord tunes that are heavily laced with country flavor. I guess it all depends on one's own personal perception of "what" is country. Don't forget that Sundown charted on the Country charts back in the 70s, too!

Yeah, I know all about those lyrics. When we were helping Val type out lyrics for her website, somehow I was chosen to do that song. It took me the better part of an afternoon to decipher those lyrics!

Except you forgot the Mole Skin Pants, the Marino Ram, the Border Collie, and maybe a six pack to complete the scene..

Keep Smiling.. Ron

For country, how about the banjo picking on Farewell to Annabelle?
