Default So just how many songs has Gordon Written and/or Recorded???

Whilst I believe this question has been raised before here I do not recall ever seeing a satisfactoy and dfrinitive answer anywhere
Searching the internet only revealed an answer from several years ago that God had recorded over 250 songs and I think at the time i found it I thought well since then there have been three complete albums plus the rarities on Songbook
Such a search did however find me a site that informed me that another Canadian a Mr Anka HAD recorded about 900 songs on 147 albums,. but no definitite current total for Gord
The subject came up again in my mind when I noted yesterday that Tom's vistory team had reached a major milestone by uploading their 100th video see:-
http://www.youtube.com/profile_video...masj157&page=1
and :-

Youtube - Knotty Pine - Gordon Lightfoot - V100
and:-

Youtube - Brave Muntaineers - Gordon Lightfoot-V99
Thereby proving again how badly Jesse Joe has been fallen down on his job
I also couldn't help noticing also that several times Tom has stated a goal of covering by September next year Gordon's entire recorded repertoire and gave this as 233 songs; indeed his IYCRMM vistory contained 233 images (each displayed for one second),apparently following the list on Wayne's site at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/lyrics.htm which hust so happens to be about 233 songs long
But Tom may have been possibly and suspiciously influenced by the fact that the album version of IYCRMM runs 2 minutes 53 seconds (233 seconds)!!
In fact Wayne's list is far from complete as it omits the 30 odd extra recordings on the Warner Brothers demo album and a host of other recorded material on other demos plus lots of official television, radio and film recordings let alone a few significent rarities on bootleg recordings some of which viz the 1965 La Cave bootleg appeared on the unofficial but retailed two Koala LPs (Yellow Bird and Get Together)
Another "lyrics" site by "spike" at:-
http://spikesmusic.spike-jamie.com/f...lightfoot.html
actually lists a total of 287 songs including
All the WB Demos
Rock My World To Sleep
Two Crazy Kids
Farewell to Nova Scotia
and the four rare songs recorded at Massey Hall in 1974
but his list also includes a pair of mistitled duplicates and another four that do not think have anything to do with Gord so that is a net total of at least 281
I have been beavering away to concoct the first ever complete listing of GL songs both written by Gord and recorded by him which I hope to upload to my website on Monday but so far I have what I think is an accurate provisional total of exactly 300
unless anybody knows any better???

Sir John Fowles,

My good man it is now useless to post the Vistory's... This was announced in the Testforum by {Lynn} who is a member of Tom's Team, which I copied and pasted below. PLEASE read it, and then go try to play the vistory's that you posted up here on this thread.

This is why I am not posting them anymore. I do however appreciate your concern as of why you thought I had fallen behind. At least it shows someone was interested.

Your Very Loyal Cyber Space Pal,

~Jesse Joe~

Sorry Joveski, didn't mean to go off topic here but had to reply to John Fowles...

This is an impressive list, I think I have them all, will check and see if you could have forgotten one or two, highly doubt it tho...

hi John, hope all's well...I loved reading your hotel rip off anecdotes...I hear you, when I was in the Sheraton (not by choice) in St Pete's, there was a large bottle of water to greet me when I arrived in the room...the label said I would be charged $6 US to my room bill if I chose to consume it...I opted for the free tap water then went to the CVS across the way and bought a 2-4 (24) of bottled water for less then the $6....I guess most corporate guests just charge this stuff to their expense accounts ....then i went to a Starbucks located in the hotel and bought a muffin and croissant which totaled another $6!...crazy stuff, I quickly switched to a diet of tea and crackers for the duration of my stay...anyhow, a digression

Wayne's Lyric/Chords location is just that, a lit of songs which he's provided lyrics and chords....it isn't a listing of all Gord songs but you will find them at his site...for eg) http://www.lightfoot.ca/wbdemos.htm lists the songs from the Warner demos...if you find that he is missing any TV performances or other relevant stuff you should let him know...I don't expect his aim is to have every bootleg listed but if Gord hade played a song live then you will probably find it listed (maybe even a commentary) at the site...I've yet to stump Wayne (aka The Schwab) on an oversite...thanks for posting the list, now we just need a lyric database, hey where is stevegeo?)

cheers
J

ps) so if we're going to be thorough and list every song written or performed by Gord, then I expect to see a vistory video for Auld Lang Syne also

if i haven't said it before, check out the If Children Had Wings video...nice photos by Tom...any others like that one where Tom of the team have used their own photos? if so I'd really like to check it/them out

I have Auld Lang Syne on video..

how do I get it onto the computer/youtube?
Please make the instruction as concise as possible - if it IS possible.. or would it be better to send a copy to James and he can do it?

I think Tom did Ordinary Man with a bunch of pics I sent him, -- some were mine, some from a GOOGLE search, some from other folks..

I love seeing yours and other Corfid members' pics of any sorts (I can do Google searches myself, thanks, lol)...the instructions are easy, char...go to google and browse your hard drive then upload...you have to click no the 'publishing' waiver that says you have permission to use audio or video or pics you are about to post but I'm sure the internet police can't keep up....I know google pics are public domain but dont know about audio....I am guilty of using a Gord audio clip as well as Barra MacNeils on stuff I've posted (temporarily anyhow) but would be flattered if EMP or Lucy MacNeil took the trouble to contact me and serve me papers, lol

I have Gord's Auld Lang Syne archived on one of my 300 mini-dv archive tapes (mostly all unlabelled, lol) and would post but I'm scrambling to head to Algonquin for a stint...if I don't appear back in a few weeks then have the authorities check black bear poops for my dental remains...I plan to swim in Lake of Bays but I imagine ice fishing will be starting soon, lol....goodluck with you(r)tube, char

ps) char, let me know if you want me to add or delete and pics from your Maritime collage...I only used the horizontal ones but think I missed including some other gems you shot...Harry was massively interfering with the post production work...he asked what was taking so long and why was i doing this...I frankly had to respond "actually, I have no idea why I'm doing this"...however, I somehow find the process fun, in small doses anyhow

You exagerate sir!! the bottles of water in our room were only $5.95

OK point taken. "My" list will l when completed on Monday include everything that I know of that Gordon recorded plus a couple of songs he wrote but never recorded himself .. one of which it has been claimed he played guitar on as I previously repoerted

cheers

I dont see "Harbor Le Cou" as one of the songs which to me is a real gem...or you dont have "The Lords Prayer" which he recorded while in Grade school listed either.

John,

On source that comes to mind in support of this question comes from the Lightfoot Vistory Tribute Team. In an updatede coment as to the total qty. of songs, I read today in You Tube, at the Stonewall Team's G.L. Tribute Channel Home Page, it was Thomas J I believe that he now has revised his estimate to just over 300, as close as one could be to your number estimate.

TJ also cited the inexact science at present as new surprises keep popping up here and there.

Well yes Steve .Young Tom actually quoted my corfid post and then wenyt on to say that they are therfore now 1/3 the way through thus it would appear that he has e agreed that 300 should be the his team's aim.
Unfortunately I mislaid or misfiled or deleted my working sheet in which I found 300 but I am now redoing it from scratch
and I now realise I was 2 short. I hope to get it finished and uploaded tomorrow now so please hang on there a bit.
I looked hard at the relevant channel page but could not find a quotable reference to "inexact science" although that is the truth.
For example I know of one sadly missed very long time fan and friend of Gordon's who had claimed to us that she had herself tape recorded a huge number of concerts over the years ("every GL concert she had attended") at least up until Hamilton 2004 when her cassette recorder failed and poor dear could not afford a new one) but I suspect that the cassettes and tapes were jettisonned along with the several tons of newspapers she had admitted were filling her Toronto apartment. and preventing access to the tapes when I asked to look at them so a potentially huge number of unique recordings albeit possibly of dubious quality have gone forever unless her sister realised what they were and either saved them or passed them to Gord.
In addition judging by the problem Gord said he had selecting the 16 rarities on Songbook I rather suspect that there are many more where those relative gems came from which I know we would all like to see released in lieu of any newly written songs/albums. Are you reading this Gord???
Thanks for your latest email Steve I will be replying ASAP

John,

I chose poor wording on mentioning tj as having cited it as an inexact science. I deliberately did not use quotation marks, nor did I say I was quoting him as having said those word, thankfully, lol, as that would have been rather incorrect as you can see in quote box here of my own previous post. I feel bad I spoke so casually of it. Thrust being: that there was another number out there so to speak, as being quite close to your number John, and now I know why ! lol.... His number came from YOU ! Me Thinketh the answer begeth the question lol..... Heck, if we all just cite AND quote one another, and agree to a number, we can have a properly cited and footnoted treatise on the number of songs ! lol.... We'll call it the mutual citation society, backing one another up on whatever we say, as having derived it from our colleague, and our colleague citing it as coming from us !

All joking aside, as unintentional and unaware of TJ's source (you John ), I have in fact encounted, as I'm sure many of us have, this sort of accidental mutual cross-referencing being done DELIBERATELY AND KNOWINGLY in academia, and in the publish-or-perish competitive world of white papers. You know, when you start seeing the same names juxtaposed in two different writers' works citing each other annualy for "preezentation" at the big conference, lol. Make no mistake everyone, this was purely accidental, and kind of funny... In any event what I AM hearing so far in pure data sounds to be ranging from 270 - 300, the modal by observation being around 276.

Interesting number came up in the 70's, one I feel to be unlikely. Had it come up in the late 90's, or in the first decade of this millenium, I could almost believe it. It came from an article in the mid 70's, witten in interview style; I recall Gord in the article photo wearing that kinda lace (?) white shirt we've all seen the picture from c '76 of him wearing, looking a bit on the ...relaxed side ( I say that only to help evoke the image of the picture for you, really.) I'll bet I can find the article in Char's clippings if I recall correctly.

Well, POINT BEING, I could swear this article, the date being quite incompatible with the number of songs given ( as I recall the number to be) said that as of the date of writing of the article ( again c '76) GL was quoted as having said [roughly paraphrased] 'I've written about 540 songs, but thus far I have recorded around 210' . Knowing that is from vague memory, it is interesting to note however that if he was interviewed in '76 after the release of SD, by my count,Songbook & GG2 aside, there were 8 more unique releases published and recorded, by my memory.

After SD, - EW, DSR, Shadows,Salute,EOM,WFY,Painter,& Harmony makes 8. An then lets say for discussion's sake there were on average 11 songs per , that would make 88 more recorded, call it 90, plus the vague memory of him saying in interview in the article he'd recorded c 210 under his name (versus two tones, etc.). So, hypothetically, 210 + 90 = 300. That article I believe to be remembering more visually than content, 540 and 210 being the content I recall, right or wrong, produces a possible number, plausability being most suspect ( that is to say, my memory of it is unlikely to have only 210 recorded of 540 written way back then).

That ratio of recorded to written very loosely speaking begins to approach 1:3, which at current best estimate of 300 recorded, would by the same actual ratio of .39:1, represent [recorded: to written] would yield at same unlikely rate of proliferation the immense number written of around 810. Applying this quantitative aproach to a qualitative subject doesn't work in real life, but it does make me wonder about what the original ratio was, because one thing I do remember for sure is the article, numbers themselves aside, DID give BOTH songs written, and songs recorded values. I do wonder what the written number is now. It could very well approach Mr. Anka's 900 ! But thats a horse of a very different color. And it is foaling. ( just a little humour...)

Having said and romped around with numbers in mere speculation, all said and done, sorry to have you scrutinize tj's channel comments for the wording "inexact science", John. But as you said, it appears to be just that !

Sorry to obfuscate the allready involute subject !
