Default Dream Street Rose

I have been trying to locate a reasonably (normal) priced CD of Dream Street Rose, with no luck. I just missed a copy for $16 but it was gone by the time I requested it

Regarding Dream Street Rose, I remember how "On the high seas" was changed to "On the TV." And how "Hangtown Blues" (from Endless Wire) song changed from "rubbing the wrong girl right" to "treating the right girl right," I guess Gord is trying to be PC at his concerts.

I agree with both things you say there Misty, everytime I watch the SoundStage concert from Chicago when he introduces the song as, "This one is called (On The TV) I take it as a joke he's playing on his audience. Because I already had the Album DSR & knew the songs pretty well. And then he gets into the song, actually singing those words instead of on the high seas, it's simply was funny to me.

As for "rubbing the wrong girl right" from "Hangdog Hotel Room" well that fits in real good with the partying style Lightfoot & many others had going on in those days. lol

I wonder if the On the TV, bit might be akin to CCR's "Bad Moon on the Rise" which was often heard as "bathroom on the right."

Gord played the joke as "TV" because listeners were confusing it?

As to Hangdog, if one decides to be with the wrong girl, one best rub her right. I mean, its the least a guy can do, right?

No. The song was originally titled and performed as "On The TV". The Soundstage performance preceded the recording and release of the album. Somewhere between Soundstage and the recording of DSR, Lightfoot decided to change it.

See here (scroll down to Soundstage 1979) :

That's funny; I just bought the vinyl copy of DSR. I named my business, 'Dream Street Photography' after, that song. Hope you got your cassette.

BTW - I'm married to a huge Jerry Jeff Walker fan. Talk about about a rowdy dude! (JJW - not the Hubs)

Horndog Hotel Room - too funny!

I for one am so glad Gord changed the name of the song to On the High Seas. It's so much nicer than On the TV. I always thought that was a joke or something.

On the TV...while I don't think it's a great song title, that version is what sticks with me and is why it's always hit home with me

Toronto is a place where many young talented actors (and singers) from small towns and distant provinces would flock to try 'give it a go'...conversely, many home bred dreamers would head over the border, Hollywood or the Big Apple or say, Nashville bound to try live out that dream...family, friends, loved ones perhaps left in the dust but all still hoping to see a name in the credits, or voice on the radio, perhaps or a face on the tv

i always thought the line 'was she drinking champagne when she made up her mind' was superb

i thought might be about the parting of ways with someone such as Cathy Smith

as for the pre-studio recording change, i think On the High Sea sounded better than Seas....unless he'd also changed the preceding line to 'bees'

one of my fave 'groove' tunes along the same theme (the theme that I perceived anyhow) is this toe tapper:

YouTube- If Hollywood Don't Need You - Don Williams

the Burt line always made me chuckle....then one day out on the east coast, a small town local said to me,

'you're from Toronto, eh?, hey, if you see Gord Lightfoot say hello for me!'

lastly, i think Gord smirks when he introduces On the TV, not as a joke but becuase of the irony of him playing the tune on the television...you can sense his overall discomfort in general

i've seen folks who can really ham it up and perform in front of crowds without a bead of sweat on the palms, but when you have that red 'recording' light come on (the one on top of the large motion cameras), it's deer in the headlights look/dry mouth time

Also that Soundstage program was recorded in a TV studio & Gord had said earlier in the show, I just get nervous it's a dry space to play in a television studio having those TV cameras so close as compared to having them way at the back where he could not see them.

I will stick with what I think was the reason for him saying "On The TV".

But I may be wrong of course !

Even with this written @ lightfoot.ca

SOUNDSTAGE - PBS - 1979

Ah yes, the legendary Soundstage Special. Lightfoot performed Cotton Jenny, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, Endless Wire, Summertime Dream, Don Quixote, If You Could Read My Mind, Ghosts Of Cape Horn (the first performance ever of this one), Beautiful, Hangdog Hotel Room, Sundown. At this point they broke for intermission and each band member said a few words, while in the background pictures and sounds from an earlier rehearsal were seen and heard. The second set went like this - Early Morning Rain, Whisper My Name, On The TV (later to become On The High Seas), Old Dan's Records and the Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

Hard to believe Dream Street Rose is already hard to find again - it was released again on CD in 2002 along with Salute - seems like the other day. I'm glad I went out and bought them.

I honestly think that this album has the best streak of songs (4) in a row. From the title track to IF YOU NEED ME, are some of the best tunes, visions, lyrics, instrumentation, and production that he's put together....This just made me think of a thread to start........

If you haven't got Dream Street rose on CD yet, check out a site called MUSICSTACK.

It's a site filled with independent sellers of music around ,not just America but the world as well. The prices aren't always that affordable but once in a while you get a good deal.
