Hello,

I've stumbled onto this forum. (Been stumbling a lot lately, gotta be gettin' old.)

I'm a long-time Gord fan, at least since '69-70.

Helped pay my way through college, playing my guitar and singing his songs.

I still play, but for myself mostly now. I have picked up a new 12-string in the last several months and I'm trying to learn to play it well.

Not so easy for a six string Travis picker, but it is coming along.

Welcome Mike. What kind of 12 string did you buy? Taylor?

Thanks Everyone,

No Bill, not a Taylor, but an Alvarez AD60S. There was a good deal, so I went for it.

Most of my playing has been finger style, on the 1973 Ovation Artist I bought new. The 12 is a new fun challenge.

Hi Mike,
If that is the same Alverez that I had,I hope you have better luck than I did.I can't recall the exact model #,but I know it had 60 in it somewhere. It was blond colored cutaway style with the 500 pickup system.I was sure glad it had the lifetime warranty,I had to return it twice in two years to have the neck reset and the third time it started fretting out,I unloaded it and got a Seagull(Godin)S12 with the elec. pickup.Though the Alverez has far superior electronics than the Seagull,I like the more mellow tone, espessially on the treble side, that the Seagull renders.I found the Alverez to be a little too bright sounding for Gord songs.Don't get me wrong here,I'm sure not putting down Alverez in any way.I had a DY45 I used for about 10 years.Gave it to my daughter about a year ago.
Anyway,I'm always happy to see "pickers" joining in here.I know you will be 4-ever hooked on the 12-string,as I found out, almost a necessity for many of Gordon's songs. One of my favorites on the 12,besides "The Wreck",is "Sea of Tranqillity".Them drones just do something to me.

Hi Brian,

Was it one of the maple Alvarez 12's? Sounds like it could be if it was blond.

Mine is mahogany, back and sides w/no electronics. If yours was maple, it would've been a lot brighter.

I know what you mean about opening up more of Gord's songs and Sea of Tranquility is one of my favorite's too. I've always like Hi'Way Songs too.

Hey Mike,

Do you have any songs online? Just wondered. I'd like to hear some of your work.

How's that Alvarez working out? I've got a Guild F212 I bought new in '76 and it just keeps getting sweeter.

best to you ..

Hello Ambrose.

The 12's working out just fine. I'm learning how to vary the volume and the jangle. It is as good a challenge as I thought it would be.

Recordings on the web? Nah. Last time I did that was in 1975. I did a hour on a local PBS radio station. My gigs all stay at home now.
