The one that comes to mind is John Stockfish. Stockfish backed the late Jim Croce on a lot of his very early material. He really shows his chops as an outstanding bass player. Since Lightfoot worked without a drummer for years, he said he needed a bass player who could not only play bass but add a percussive effect to the tunes.
Others would be the studio players like guitarists Dean Parks and Hugh McCracken, drummer Ken Buttrey and harmonica ("Fastest Mouth in the South") Charlie McCoy. Drummer Herb Lovelle also backed John Denver for a while.
