A I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
I don't know; maybe it's not appropriate to post this thread here but I may have a problem with the way my music comes off. I'm rarely accused of sounding like Lightfoot. Most of the time, if someone says I sound like anyone it's Cat Stevens, or Ian Anderson (probably because I had just done a song by one of them.
The thing is, my wife says that she knows my TRUE voice, she can hear it when I'm talking, and that when I sing, I seem to be imitating Gord.
She finds his voice iritating at times, she enjoys "Beautiful" by the writer]
and she finds my tenor even more obnoxious than his.
By the way, my wife rarely ever goes off key herself and is a very good Jazz singer. I played Bass and Guitar in her Jazz Standards and Showtunes band.
Here's one I can think of Ironically, it's her favorite of all my tunes.
The other one is also from my new album. It's called,"The Air I Breath".
I'll get to that another time, and p[oint out where the stealing from his
Guitar riffs and such are sooooo noticeable.
Until then, if some one, J.J., Brian, Mary, Charlene, anyone
can let me know if this is true and if I should become aware of it please let me
know.
Oh and go 49ers!
Thanks,

I don't hear any Lightfoot of any era, or Cat Stevens either. I have no idea who Ian Anderson is.
You seem to have your own distinct sound and it's working for you so keep it that way!
Looks like a nice little spot for live music...

Re: A I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
Charlene,
That's music to my ears! Thank you. I'll save this posting for the next time that Minday tells me that I should not try to sound like Gordon or anyone else.
You are very supportive of my music endevours. I greatly appreciate that.
Well, I've got to get ready for band practice.
I play Jazz Bass and some guitar in our new ensemble.
With all the critizism I get from my wife, she is very supportive when it comes to every aspect of my life. The one thing I was looking 4 in a mate was brutal
honesty. And boy, have I got it. If you enjoy Jazz Standards and showtunes
check us out. This is the most beautifully written Valentine's Day song
I've ever heard of.
Take care and thanks again!

Oh, I almost forgot. "Ian Anderson" is the Leader of the Band "Jethro Tull".
Alright, gettin' busy!

Well, that's the best way to stay out of harms' way.
Still, you may like.
And now, here's something totally different...

Re: A I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
Robby,
I don't hear Gord in your voice either, or Cat Stevens for that matter. And with Ian Anderson, I mostly think of his flute playing.
You have a nice singing voice and an interesting, unique sound. I find that many people sound quite different when they sing than you would expect from hearing them speak.
I don't sing (well, I do, but I shouldn't), but I do write, and there is always a concern that what we create will be derivative, or unconsciously plagiarized from other artists that we admire. Just the fact that you are concerned about this speaks well of your artistic integrity.
I would say, just keep on doing what you're doing

Well now that I've heard IA I can safely say, for me, I haven't missed anything.
It's hard to live up to the standards that Lightfoot set.

Re: A I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
Robby,
Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens and Ian Anderson are three of my all-time favourites and I've seen them all in concert.
Ian Anderson's voice is struggling now, but in his heyday, he was brilliant. Here's a live performance of Ian and the band Jethro Tull doing the original "Thick As A Brick":
A few months ago, he released "Thick As A Brick 2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock?" and its songwriting, structure and musicianship make it in many ways better than the original concept album.

Right on, Dave. I listened to that old LP a whole lot on my old Lloyd's all in one sound system. Great channel separation. Lol
Isn't this production wonderfully crisp. I think it as recognizable as say, Stairway to Heaven.... that subtle acoustic bridge is the sweet spot

Robbie, you sound like you're trying to be Robbie.
Do you have any live recordings that aren't through the board? Ie. any sound capture from the mains including room ambience? Cheers

J.J. The song that you guys completed with Brian came out sooo well.
I wish that I had THAT kind of studio sound equipment.
Here's some noisy "room ambience" live recordings from some of my shows.
Is this what you meant? If not, I'm sorry for sending all this...

Re: A I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
rob, yes i figure you record through your soundboard and also have audio capture via your video cam
so using an audio mix of say, 60% board and 40% room ambience from video cam mic is something to toy with...assuming there is some crowd response and reverb coming through the mains
its been 5 years since you sent me your CRT recording...you should upload it
and i would like to hear more of your Croce works...i love WWAYG a lot

Re: Am I Original enough, Or Am I trying to Sound like Gord, when I sing & write?
ps2) I get those mixed up myself. Yeah, F# and G for Cold On The Sh.
What do they say? E5(no 3rd)
The only other artist I've covered who used that kind of chord position and changes is Dave Matthews, on "Crash". I don't do that anymore cuz it's too wine ey.
O.k. J.J., I'll put up CRRT. I did it on a very windy day on St. Pete. Bch., and I was trying to mike her. It was a bitch. No video, just some pictures. 4 youtube, i'll try to find a good picture a train. Maybe spin it around for the 3D experience!
I do have something here from that day. Do you like.............................................. .....James Taylor? If so, click on and hang on for a whoppin' got those "paw jewish white boy acoustic BaLues"!!!

That "Steamroller" video linked to some songs from a 1971 BBC James Taylor studio concert, including "Highway Song" with James on piano. What a treat! Thanks for posting it.

Dave... are you talking about the one I posted above?
I hope not! That's a recording of me, on St. Patrick's Day at The Swigwam on St. Pete. Bch., here in Florida.

Robby,
After your video ends, the screen changes to a 'menu' of videos of James Taylor, etc.
Your performance of "Steamroller" was good. I've seen Taylor perform it in concert many times. And I remember a brilliant version by a Melbourne band at the Torquay Hotel in the 1980s.
